Drivers in Florida might be seeing red if another traffic camera system is installed to keep an eye on vehicles that violate the law.

The flashing red lights and stop arm signs on school buses don’t seem to catch every drivers' attention when driving past the big yellow buses.

The Senate Bill 1570, also known as “Gabby’s Law,” allows the installment of a video recording device mounted on school buses.

The bill, which is sponsored by state Sen. David Simmons, provides a clear view of the date, time and license plate of the vehicles that pass on either side of the bus, the bill text stated.

Transportation Assistant Director of Volusia County Public Schools Bill French stated that this law is a necessity to improve student safety.

On a second offense within five years, the driver’s license would be suspended for at least six months but no longer than one year, as stated in the bill report.

Additionally, a $65 fine would be collected and deposited in the state's Emergency Medical Service Trust Fund to support trauma centers.

Last year, during the Florida Department of Education annual survey, bus drivers reported 2,172 vehicles passing by stopped school buses on that particular day.

All counties in Florida accounted for an approximate total of 11,000 vehicles violating the law on the day of the survey.

Though the surveys and evidence collected throughout the years depict an alarming number of violators, some students at UCF believe that these new additions to school buses are only contributing to the era of surveillance.

The goal falls under the same umbrella as to red light camera devices, which is to improve the number of cars breaking the law.
