Summary Service Learning entails a different kind of learning as it prepares you to get a feel of what the real world is like. Studies show Service Learning to be very successful with students as it involves them reflecting and bringing forward their own knowledge when engaging in the community. As students are forced to reflect on what they’ve been taught and applying this knowledge, it has led to greater success in comparison to a student who takes notes while listening to a prof who speaks for a solid 2-3hrs being less effective. Therefore, this learning is highly beneficial as the student is continuously applying self-knowledge when dealing with real life occurrences, which also helps prepare for further situations. From Service learning, …show more content…
Some students prefer that direct contact with a prof and have no issue, taking notes, as they could learn best this way. In this sense, I feel for the type of students who prefer a classroom setting, would not benefit from service learning significantly. On the other hand, for others who prefer to get involved outside of the classroom would be more beneficial to service learning. Although the study shows people get more out of service learning I feel this can be contradictory. Although, I do understand how Service Learning can be beneficial to students as they gain knowledge and develop experience within the community, as they are expected to constantly reflect and apply their self-knowledge of what’s being …show more content…
She gave me a clear understanding on what service learning is all about, with examples that truly stuck with me. For instance, the African women who had a baby on the plane, she referred to the passengers as one entire community as everyone contributed to the birth whether it was through delivering to finding necessities. Although everyone on board was a stranger to the African American giving birth, everyone stepped in to supporting the women with the birth of her first child. Therefore, this is an example how everyone’s contribution within anything in our world can and will make a

It is impossible to spend sufficient time on the works we will be exploring within the bounds of class-time, so you will be required to spend time reading and writing on your own; this is a practice that will enable you to bring your personal experiences with these works to our discussions in class and participate in an engaged way as part of our community of learning. But our community of learning is broader than the classroom—it also includes the community organizations you will be partnering with for your service-learning. We will be investigating and interrogating a versatile metaphor—cultivation—and how it impacts the cultures and communities in which we live...

Stereotypes and Borat

...Stereotypes are in everyday life and we should be working hard to rid of this but instead we are promoting typecasts through the media. In the movie Borat Sacha Baron Cohen portrays a man named Borat who is a Kazakstani reporter. He is sent by the Kazakh Ministry of Information to gain a better understanding of American culture and bring his findings back home. Borat and his advisor Azamat played by Ken Davitian set off to New York City. They face culture shock and are bewildered by the big city. Borat being moved from a very Gemeinschaft country to a Gesellschaft one causes him to be very touchy with strangers. The people whom live in New York City put off his behavior as a folkway and are less than pleasant to him and he starts to lose hope. Then one night while channel-surfing in his hotel room, he discovers the beautiful Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson. He is now determined to go to California marry Anderson and find the true essence of America. On his rode trip there he has many encounters with "typical" Americans. There are three types of stereotypes in the movie Borat. The first way Borat classifies against people is through the way Borat himself thinks. He believes; Jews are scary, blacks are cool, and women are pea-brained sex machines. In one scene Borat is forced to stay at a bed and breakfast owned by a homely Jewish couple. He and his partner Azamat are terrified and are unable to stay the entire night. In this scene Borat has an obvious font and back stage....

Movie Review

...My favourite movie is “The Dictator”. It was produced in year 2012 and starring one of the most renowned actor, Sasha Baron Cohen. It is a comedy film and it features a little mockumentary. As a form of parody to current world issues revolving around the topic of democracy and dictatorship, it tells the story of how a ruler risked his life for the sake of oppressing democracy. The movie takes a straight pinch at the world politics by making jokes of those we called our leaders. The brave act from the actor cum script-writer to film such a mockumentary is indeed worth the praises. The reason why I chose this as my favourite movie is because of the following reasons: Firstly, the movie is indeed a great joy to watch. I am very sure that it captured my attention from the start of the movie, where it paid tribute to the late dictator of North Korea - Kim Jong-Il, till when it ends with the ruler finally giving in to democracy. The plot of the movie is entertaining throughout. Secondly, I could not remember laughing as much from other comedies I have watched in my entire life. It is really a humorous movie throughout and the contexts of its parodies are indeed easy to grasp. Lastly, I have always been a fan of Sasha Baron Cohen. He is an intelligent and genius, I would call it in script writing for such films. One other notable film produced by him is, Borat. This movie is definitely suitable for people who are stressed up and in need of some laughter to brighten up their...

...In this assignment I will be describing theories of learning, I will be writing briefly about 6 influences and refer to both positive and negative, I will also be writing about skills for learning, support for learning and learning opportunities. Theories of learning - Kolb's experiential learning theory works on two levels: a four stage cycle of learning and four separate learning styles. The four stage cycle are: - Concrete Experience (coming across a new experience of a situation, or interpretation of existing experience); - Reflective Observation (reviewing a new experience and reflecting on the experience); - Abstract Conceptualisation (concluding reflection which gives rise to a new idea, or a modification of an existing abstract concept); - Active Experimentation (planning and then trying out what you have learned to see what result you get). The four stages are: 1. Experience 2. Reflection 3. Conceptualise 4. Test. Honey and Mumford’s learning style theory has the purpose of persuading people to try their ‘test’ in order to find out their own personal way of learning which could be: * Activist like to be involved, like new ideas, lose interest quickly, like to dominate and have ‘jump first/think later’ mentality; * Reflectors like to observe from the edge of the group, consider things from a range of different perspectives, they let others contribute before they do, collect information before drawing a conclusion; * Theorists like to bring together different...
