When googling reasons to volunteer there several websites with different lists of reasons but one thing always remained the same list to list; ‘to help’ always remained towards the bottom of the list if it was included at all. And ‘valuable on a resume’ always ranked near the top. Over the years we have lost sight of why volunteering is so important. One of the biggest issues with service-learning and volunteering is that it teaches a false sense of need in the community and how to respond to this need. It gave me a false sense of importance. I was helping these under privileged kids with their homework that makes me an amazing person. When in reality it was them helping me. I learned a lot from the children at CSI. A whole lot more than they learned from me. They also left a bigger impression on me than I ever could on them. I will always remember then bounding through the door at 3:30 everyday and going crazy. They were always so happy and pumped. They loved deeply and widely and never seemed to notice that they did not have some of the same things their peers had. As a whole they were more appreciative than some of the other children I have worked with. Nothing about them said low
