The success literature of the last half of the 20th century largely attributed success to personality traits, skills, techniques, maintaining a positive attitude, etc. This philosophy can be referred to as the Personality Ethic.

However, during the 150 years or so that preceded that period, the literature on success was character oriented. It emphasized the deeper principles and foundations of success. This philosophy is known as the Character Ethic, under which success is attributed more to such characteristics as integrity, courage, justice, patience, etc

Personality Ethic are secondary. • Secondary traits may help one to play the game to succeed in specific circumstances • Long term success requires both • Ralph Waldo Emerson: "What you are shouts so loudly in my ears I cannot hear what you say."


Absolute principles that exist in all human beings. Examples of such principles are fairness, honesty, integrity, human dignity, quality, potential, and growth. Principles contrast with practices that are for specific situations whereas principles have universal application.

Dependence: the paradigm under which we are born, relying upon others to take care of us. • Independence: the paradigm under which we make our decisions and take care of ourselves. • Interdependence: the paradigm under which we cooperate to achieve something that cannot be achieved independently.

Dr, Stephen R. Covey, the author of this book tries to illustrate that our character is fundamentally a combination of our habits; either good ones or bad ones. Habits become consistent and because of such consistency, they often become an unconscious pattern, which causes our character to be manifested and creates our effectiveness or ineffectiveness. Since no one is born effective, it is great to know these habits can be learned. They obviously are not quick fixes, because anything that comes easy goes away just as easy. These habits take time and are a journey of constant self-analysis and tweaking those things that we know shouldn’t be a part of the process. The good thing is we don’t have to figure it out all alone. This book gives us awesome guidelines and steps to create an effective life that has been proven successful in a personal and professional sense. One thing we should keep in mind though is that integrity and fundamental goodness are key qualities behind anything we do. Before starting to read the book, I thought I was going to find myself with one of those books with difficult concepts to understand and to relate with, however, from the beginning of the begging of the book I was able to connect myself to the author’s ideas. Reading about what the author and his wife were going through while they were raising their son was helpful to me, as Covey tells us, his book was inspired by a familiar crisis he and his wife were going through as they were raising their child. Their child was having a hard time keeping up academically and socially. The child was falling behind his classmates in most respects. The first thing the author, Covey and his wife, Sandra tried to do was to motivate his son, to reach such goal they employed phrases such as “that’s good son” “keep it up” however, Covey, soon realized that they were employing the wrong strategy, what they were doing wasn’t in harmony with the way they perceived their son. Consequently, they started to change themselves, they decided to focus on themselves rather than on their son, they gave up the idea of wanting to change their child, rather, they decided to start valuing their son’s uniqueness. The sample of 85 companies, locating in Almaty, Astana, Shymkent and Aktobe has chosen to participate in this research. Data was collected through the results of well-constructed questionnaires and by the agency of general managers of companies. Questionnaire was distributed to all potential respondents. A total of 76 companies returned the completed questionnaire. The finding shows that most companies have placed low emphasis on company time management. In addition, the results identifies that only small portion of companies are familiar with the book «The Seven Habits of Highly Effective people» by Stephen Covey. With greater competition in the globalized market, this research implicates that Kazakhstan companies also should give greater priority to dynamic developments in time management in order to survive in the market place.
