Checkpoint: Sexuality and Value

Which value system or systems discussed in the text do you most relate to? Explain your answer.

The value system that I can relate to most would be ethical relativism. The reason for this is because in this value system, ethical relativism dismisses the idea that there is a single moral view for diverse subjects like sex, abortion, the type of clothes you wear, etc. There are some people who may disagree to having sex before marriage while there are others who think having sex before marriage is okay. In this value system people have their own perspectives on different situations which rules out the single moral view of these situations. What may be right to us may appear wrong to others but because we are all different, I think that it is up to individual’s to determine what is right and what is wrong in their lives. I personally feel that being in love with someone and having sex with that person is okay to do without being married. As for people who have sex with others without any emotional commitment, I do not believe there is any specific moral view for that either and yes I may disagree with this part in a way but not completely. Some of the reasons people give for having sex with no emotional commitment are ridiculous but then there are some reasons that are not so ridiculous. What it all comes down to is that people have different moral views and perspectives relating to sexual activity that others may disagree with while having their own perspectives and moral views on the

Sexuality and Value Systems

...Sexuality and Value Systems Sex should be responsible, with the right person at the right time. Irresponsible sex leads to unpleasant consequences. Not being prepared can also cause problems such as sexually transmitted infections or undesired pregnancy. A sexual experience should be pleasant in every way and it should not result in pain. Values There are a couple of values we should all have when being sexually involved: Being Responsible Being responsible involves a variety of things; and using protection is not all it takes. Being responsible is considering an entire scenario before being sexually involved. Knowing what you’re doing and why you’re doing it is very important and that shows responsibility. Being responsible also relates to thinking about the other person and not only yourself. Since it takes two, both partners should be in agreement. Being proactive. Being proactive is one of the most important values in sexuality. No man or woman should practice sex without being prepared. If there’s no planning for pregnancy than there should an on-going plan with birth controls to prevent it. Same thing with man, they should be prepared always to cover their side of being proactive. Having principles. When the time comes for me to talk to my son about sex, it wouldn’t be right for me to teach him about being responsible, proactive and not having principles. If there are no principles than there wouldn’t be limits; and without limits...

...think about sexuality. People feel uncomfortable or embarrassed and find it difficult to discuss any subject about sex. Sexuality is made up of many things other than personal contact and sexual relations. Sexuality is an important part of who a person is and what she or he will become. Sexuality affects how a person thinks, feels, acts, and see others peoples. It affects how they see male and female. Sexuality includes the whole person and personality. Sexuality begin at birth and ends in death. It includes feelings about self-concept and self-esteem, how they feel about being male or female, and how well people get along with others. Sexuality deals with body image, affection, intimacy, pleasures, and relationships. People learn about sexual attitudes or beliefs at homes, churches, schools, and society. Religious individuals are much more resistant to utilitarian modes of thinking than their less religious counterparts. Most parents want to talk openly with their children about sexuality, but often they do not feel prepared to do so. Parents often question when to start having these conversations and what to say to their children, or how would be the best way to express their family values, beliefs and attitudes. When parents are open and talk about these topics honestly, they help their children develop respect for relationships and provide them with important information. Parents want to share their personal values, religious beliefs, and moral viewpoint in sexuality. Parent’s...

Thus, People in their adult life deserve the right to sexual fulfillment; yet, the expression in sexuality and intimacy changes in response to age. Research has shown that there are many barriers to intimacy in elderly population. The barriers are usually created as a result of the myths about sexuality and older adults. Many relate the sexual intimacy barriers of older adults to health and argue that there is a relationship between sexuality and health. However, this paper argues that the physical and pathological changes in elderly should not be associated with the opportunity to enjoy and express sexual intimacy. This paper first briefly reviews the physical and physiological and environmental factors that influence the sexual expression of older adults. The paper then argues that older people can only express intimacy when they accept their feelings, values and attitudes toward sexuality. Finally, educational intervention on attitudes toward sexuality can help older adults express intimacy. The physical factors that influence the sexual expression of older adults are usually health related. Data suggest that approximately one quarter of elderly adult living in USA live with disability or illness that limits them from healthy sexual life and intimacy (Deacon, 1995). In other words, having poor health status can create barriers for...

Journal Article Review

...Chamberlain College of Nursing NUR 305 Health Assessment Wendy Swope, Instructor Fall B 2010 Introduction ‘Sexuality and the Chronically Ill Older Adult’ is an article published in Sexuality and Disability, March, 2000 issue, written by Verna C. Pangman and Marilyn Seguire. In this article, the authors provide an awareness of how sexuality, as it relates with the chronically ill older adult, is not adequately addressed by the healthcare professional. This article promotes awareness, dispels myths and provides an overview of recommended approaches to addressing the sexual needs of this population. Summary of Article Sexuality, though described as one of the most natural and basic aspects of life that affects an individual’s identity as a human being (Pangan & Seguire,2007), has developed very devaluing reactions from society. Addressing sexuality for this population is often neglected. It is unfortunate because sexuality is a very natural instinct that doesn’t go away just because you grow old or develop a chronic illness. Sexuality and growing old have been coupled together in a myth that presents the perception that one cancels out the other and this is so far from the truth. This perception leads to the misconception of the importance of sexuality to the elderly while making it difficult for the elderly to hold onto the value of sexuality as a part of their normal lives. The article continues on to describe the importance of the health care professional...

Platonic Dualism And Religion Essay

...There are many philosophies and myths about conflicts between humans’ body and the mind. Major role in this conflict plays religion – Christianity. Religion has always tried to limit people’s sexual desires and needs. One of the major beliefs in Christianity regarding sexuality is that every sexual act that happens outside of marriage and not for reproduction purposes is considered a sin. What are the bases to this strong belief in Christianity? The bases of the rules for this religion come from a concept of Platonic dualism, Stoicism and Gnosticism movements, and Augustin’s contribution; all these historical beliefs influenced religion because they implement that there is a conflict between the soul and the body. These theories and beliefs impacted on people’s view on sexuality because people held their sexual needs within themselves to help their soul find salvation....

What do all these things have in common? All are related in various ways to the vast domain of human sexuality. That is, they are related, on the one hand, to the human desires and activities that involve the search for and attainment of sexual pleasure or satisfaction and, on the other hand, to the human desires and activities that involve the creation of new human beings. For it is a natural feature of human beings that certain sorts of behaviors and certain bodily organs are and can be employed either for pleasure or for reproduction, or for both. The philosophy of sexuality explores these topics both conceptually and normatively. Conceptual analysis is carried out in the philosophy of sexuality in order to clarify the fundamental notions of sexual desire and sexual activity. Conceptual analysis is also carried out in attempting to arrive at satisfactory definitions of adultery, prostitution, rape, pornography, and so forth. Sexuality Research

...Sexuality Research Paper Introduction: The question of sexuality is on that needs that needs thorough analysis in order to determine the implication brought about by the depiction of sex and sexuality through the use of print media. The depiction of human sexuality can be separated into two parts, male and female sexuality. These two forms vary according to the differences in the gender of the persons involved. Objective: The main objective of this paper is to study, keenly, the research methods used in two literatures, and to provide an analysis of the literatures on sexual imagery. The two literatures were compiled by different people to show how various forms of male and female sexuality are constructed in different publications. The two articles are similar because they both talk about the depiction of women in various forms of print advertisements especially in magazines. However, as Sexuality focuses mostly on the sexuality and people’s view of sex, as well as, their feelings and preferences in sex, The European Journal of Marketing, focuses mostly on the picture of women that is painted representing women as either sexual objects or feminine sexual goddesses. Deepak Chopra Role Model Review

...will compare and contrast Deepak Chopra’s values and actions to my worldview and values. First, I will compare my nature of God view to Deepak Chopra’s view of the nature of God. Second, I will compare my view of sexuality to Deepak Chopra’s view of sexuality. Third, I will compare my money and career views to those of Deepak Chopra. Lastly, I will support an explanation by providing reasons why I believe Deepak Chopra is a perfect role model. Compare/Contrast the Values and Actions of Deepak Chopra with My Worldview and Experiences Nature of God I believe Deepak Chopra has a secular spirituality worldview (Frye, 2013) because he believes God is the creator of the universe who is within each one of us. Deepak Chopra is an endocrinologist who now practices the alternative medicine of Ayurveda, which has its roots as an ancient Indian medicine. Ayurveda medicine is a way of keeping one’s “body, mind, and spirit in perfect equilibrium with nature” (Das, n.d.). Dr. Chopra believes God reveals Himself to us through our spiritual practices and God does not reveal Himself to us solely because we believe (Roff, 2009). After reading about Deepak Chopra and his worldview, I would say that I have beliefs about God that are similar to those of Deepak Chopra. I believe that God is the creator of the universe and that God is inside each of us, waiting to be discovered. I also believe in the power of being able to heal oneself from within. Sexuality In my opinion, I feel that Deepak Chopra...

Human Sexuality

...HUMAN SEXUALITY AND SEX I. Definition Human sexuality is the expression of sexual sensation and related intimacy between human beings. Psychologically, sexuality is the means to express the fullness of love between a man and a woman. Biologically, it is the means through which a child is conceived and the lineage is passed on to the next generation. And it involves the body, mind, and spirit. There are a great many forms of human sexuality, comprising a broad range of behaviors, and sexual expression varies across cultures and historical periods. Yet the basic principles of human sexuality are universal and integral to what it means to be human. Sex is related to the very purpose of human existence: love, procreation, and family. Sexuality has social ramifications; therefore most societies set limits, through social norms and taboos, moral and religious guidelines, and legal constraints on what is permissible sexual behavior. DID YOU KNOW? Human sexual activity is more than a physical activity; it impacts the minds and hearts as well as the bodies of the participants. People may experiment with a range of sexual activities during their lives, though they tend to engage in only a few of these regularly. However, most societies have defined some sexual activities as inappropriate (wrong person, wrong activity, wrong place, wrong time, and so forth). The most widespread sexual norm historically, and the norm promoted nearly universally by the world's religions, is that...

Gender and Sexual Identity

...Running Head: GENDER IDENTITY AND SEXUALITY Gender Identity and Sexuality Table of Contents Abstract………………………………………………………………………………………..3 Gender Identity and Sexuality……………………………………………………….. References………………………………………………………………………………….. Abstract Sexuality and gender identify are two separate terms but they relate to each other very much. Sexuality is anything that relates to sex. It includes birth control, abortion, our bodies, our gender and gender identity. Understanding how teens think about their sexuality helps us understand what they are going though as young adults. Gender Identity has changed in the last ten year. What is gender identity? It is the way we look at ourselves or how other people look at us. Some teens may be confused of what their sexual orientation is. And what is a counselor’s role to helping them out. Some teen may be unsure of their gender identity, if they are supposed to feel a certain way to the opposite sex or the same sex. Is TV and media persuading them that they have to be a certain way? In this paper I will tie to the two together. First a person has to be aware of their sexuality. Sex and Gender will also be explained. Even though they are the same they can be defined very different. Culture also plays a major part in sexuality, cultures such as Asians, Blacks, Whites and Latinos. Each culture handles sexuality different. Research includes exploring that many avenues of each culture. Introduction Human being are divers...

Who Should Teach Children About Sex and Sexuality?

...Who should teach children about sex and sexuality? Children of these generations are having more access to all kinds of information including sex and sexuality than past generations. They can get sexual information from school, parents, friends, and even from Internet. Talking about sexuality is always been a hard topic that concerns mostly schools and parents. But who are the right teachers that should tell everything about sex and sexuality to the children? After asking me this question many times, I believe that parents should teach their own children because they are the role models to the children, give them the right information, and protect them. Schools still need to have sex education programs, but parents are the ones who are primarily responsible. I know in all schools, people are teaching about sex and sexuality to the children, and there is nothing wrong with that; they actually teach sexuality in schools because for many parents is just impossible to explain their own kids or sometimes they don’t seem to care. I believe parents should teach their children because they are the role models to those children. To me the house is the first school, and is the place where you grow and learn many things from your parents. In my opinion, it will be better for the kids to learn about this topic from their parents than strangers in the school. My parents never told me anything about sex; I learned from school, but I would it like them to teach me because they were...
