Shabbat Shalom Everybody. This week’s Torah portion is from the book of Deuteronomy and it is called Ki Tavo. Like most other readings in Deuteronomy, this Torah portion contain various laws and regulations for how the Jewish people should show their appreciation for God, how to give to charity, and how they have developed during a long trek through the desert. While these rules that are imparted to the Jewish people are important, I think this Torah portion holds value in different ways. In this portion, Moses addresses the Jewish people and reminds them that they are God’s chosen people and that they must show their appreciation for him. By bring God gifts such as fruits and sacrifices, it shows that the Jewish people are thankful for being chosen and promise to live by Gods rules. Moses also …show more content…
The list of consequences, from exile to famine to illness and poverty, are intended to encourage the Jewish people to behave and appreciate God. Seems like they have a good reason to follow God and show their thanks for being chosen. This portion puts a very interesting perspective on the Jewish people’s relationship with God. While being chosen has it’s perks such as having water’s parted for you and being given laws, there also seems to be some issues with the Jewish people’s relationship with God. The main issue is that being chosen does not really seem like much of a choice. The Jewish people are told how to live and how to appreciate God and if they break from these rules then they will be punished in the ways that Moses laid out. The use of threats and consequences is not the best way to encourage somebody to act in a way you want. Think of this situation if
