Shane by Angela Day “Shane” is a screenplay that was based on Jack Schaefer's 1949 book of the same name. The film is a classic western tale which is a very familiar and highly regarded in the western genre and the most successful Western of the 1950s and it is also a period piece since it is set in the late 1800’s. The film's rich color cinematography captures the beautiful environment of the frontier which was filmed on location in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, with the mountains as a backdrop. The location and the having been filmed in color is effective in telling the story and had it been done in black and white it would have lost some of the visual impact. This film received six Academy Award nominations including “Best Cinematography” and won one for photography. Many films since Shane have paid homage to the film and used a similar plot and theme. The film used technicolored panoramic angles to create a symbolic myth: the age old story of the duel between good and evil, the social conflict (with families, law and order, and homesteaders) the challenges faced in the era which included an implied love connection between Shane and Marion, lawless gunslingers, and a land-dispute conflict between a homesteader and cattle baron, and the coming of age of a young boy. The film is riddled with classic symbols and conflicts from the uprooting of the stubborn stump in the yard, Torrey's murder in the muddy street and his hilltop funeral, and the climactic finale. Most of the story is told from the point of view from Joey, the young boy who idolized Shane. We are made aware from the opening that Shane is connected to the wilderness as he descends from the mountains and Joey sees him through the antlers of the deer. The mountains are another key western theme that occurs time and time again. The opening scene echoes the final scene, as Shane proceeds back up the mountain he descended from. Another setting that impacted the story was the border town inhabited by the Ryker’s; the town in Shane is desolate and not many buildings have been erected although the story would infer that this town was superior to the homesteads. The emptiness represents an eerie and unsafe location; even though the town is so deserted it still has the main wooden buildings visual in most western films. There is the saloon, mostly occupied by Ryker and his men, The Grayston general store which is separated only by the saloon doors, the blacksmiths, where Tory is visiting (before he gets murdered by gun-slinging Wilson) and finally a hotel. Facial expressions and body language are very important in the visual style of Shane. The ranchers are very angry and unwelcoming. They show this by their reaction when Shane enters the saloon. They stare at him and are not happy with him being in their territory. The music is much more intense when we are in the company of the ranchers. The film also used the technique of dramatic foils by how the Ryker’s contrasted Shane and the homesteaders, using the visual technique of light and dark colors. The use of low-angle shots was used in the scenes of watching a fist-fight as horse hooves stomp dust right up against the lens and up the tension of the fight; and then dissolve from a cemetery into a shot of Shane heading into battle. Sound effects were also present in this film but the most memorable would have to be when Shane is fighting in the saloon as Joey looks on eating a peppermint stick; each punch echoes with a bite into the candy. Shane was the first film to be projected in a "flat" widescreen, a format that Paramount invented in order to offer audiences something that television could not which was a panoramic screen. Shane was one of the first films in which actors were attached to hidden wires that yanked them backwards when they were shot from the front. Director George Stevens also used a small cannon and fired it into a garbage can to create the loud report of the pistol for maximum effect. Telling this story from the point of view of Joey allowed the viewer to see the emphasis on the relationships of the characters. While Shane never comes out and says that he left a life of being a gunslinger it is implied throughout the film beginning with his emotional reaction to the loud noise. Another complex relationship is that of Shane and Marion who seem to have a certain attraction and connection to one other so much that even Joe acknowledges it in a few scenes. In a sense Shane becomes the person that he was trying to escape from but does so to save the family that he has formed a connection with.

...The final face-off between Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne had dominated the build-up to this clash, but it wasn't quite the story of the Mumbai innings, though it had its moments. Rohit Sharma played a classy innings to take Mumbai to 133 on a pitch that was made for more, against a pumped-up Rajasthan line-up eager to give its captain a fitting farewell from the IPL. The Tendulkar-Warne show should have been a non-event, for the move to open the bowling with left-arm spinner Ankeet Chavan almost yielded success when Tendulkar was trapped in front first ball. Paul Reiffel, the umpire, felt the ball pitched outside leg when it hadn't. Chavan should have had Tendulkar again in the sixth over, catching him on the pads during an attempted pull, but Reiffel, once more, felt otherwise. Shane Watson's early breakthroughs - he dismissed T Suman and Ambati Rayudu in successive overs - coupled with Chavan's discipline had deprived Mumbai of an attacking start they would have hoped for after choosing to bat, though Tendulkar's reprieves gave them the opportunity to rebuild. Rohit Sharma had won praise from Warne as one of the most exciting talents in Indian cricket, and he undoubtedly would have impressed his opposing captain with his performance today. He quickly took the lead in the stand with Tendulkar, smashing Watson over midwicket and charging out to Chavan to dispatch him over mid-on. His stand-out shot was an imposing drive against Warne through extra cover, matched by a...

...not be at the prime of his game, but does the argument justify the fact that their averages have gone down by more than 15-18%? The fact that these names have had such a huge impact on us is probably one of the reasons we have not really delved into these details. One is tempted not to believe that this is the general trend. My observation is, as far as batting is concerned, that the counter-examples are far and few for e.g. Mark Waugh. Why I say this is because there are examples galore to prove it otherwise as far as bowling is concerned. Let’s see the figures of some of the greats on the bowling side: Courtney Walsh Glenn Mcgrath Shane Warne Richard Hadlee Their averages have still hovered around the same mark as during their entire career. This, to me, is a conundrum for I have delved deep into this but haven’t found any...

Rhetorical Analysis Of A Documentary By Shane Smith

...Shane Smith has a “theme song” at the beginning of his documentary with pictures of where he has explored and done some research. HBO’s documentaries are now for being sound in research and credible. In the documentary, there is video of Smith and his crew going to the places being talked about by the scientist like Antarctica. Smith also builds credibility by showing the audience how the data was received. The data was received by a laser that calculates density, temperature, and depth of the ice block being examined. Al Gore uses scientists’ graphs and statistics to build his credibility while, Smith shows the data gathering method and being with the ice to build his credibility. Not only does Smith uses multiple medias to establish credibility to the audience, his organization and placement of emotional appeals to the audience is more significant than Gore’s and Taylor’s organization and placement of emotional appeals. The organization, structure, and placement of emotional appeals are important in persuading the audience because if there is no connection they can’t relate to the topic. It will be hard to connect ideas if the audience doesn’t follow or relate to the topic. Gore used the...

...don't follow simple directions. However, these campers learned the hard way just how important directions are. It was a wonderful week to camp in the great outdoors, even if some of their friends thought it was a strange way to spend a romantic vacation. Alliyah and Shane were looking forward to their week at Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. Little did they know what a learning experience this trip would be. After a scenic drive through the glorious mountains, Alliyah and Shane arrived at the camping area. A tall, skinny ranger dreesed in a blue uniform who stood at the booth handed them a map and asked, “Have you ever camped with us before?” “A better question would be if we ever camped before,” Shane answered wryly. “You’ll be fine. Just remember, this isn’t a hotel. We do have bears and other animals in the area, so lock your food up in the car,” said the ranger as he handed them a lists of Do’s and Don’ts. After they were handed the list they continued a safe drive until they arrived at the campsite. They started to set up camp. Alliyah and Shane were very excited to start their first camping experience. Exhausted from their first attempt at setting up a campsite, Alliyah and Shane crawled inside the tent that evening, giggling and whispering to each other. They doused the light inside the tent and ignored the world outside the canvas. The ranger’s list was left laying on the tent floor. They never read the list. They didnt even realize that...

Children Story

...November 17, 2015 Shane has a difficult time separating from his mother each morning. At drop off, he clings to her and screams uncontrollably. After she leaves, Shane continues to scream and cry until I am able to soothe him. A lot of children experience this type of anxiety from separating with their parents. I plan on having both parents and the child come into the class before the first day so they can get comfortable and familiar the classroom. I expect some children to have a hard time separating from their parents because some has never been away from them since birth. For Shane I will talk to mom before the first day and ask her if it is possible for her to drop him off and leave quickly instead of hanging around. I will explain her that hanging around will only make him upset longer. I will also practice fun ways to say bye with Shane that will eventually calm him when parting. Majority of my students are four some are five so I think pairing them up with a buddy in the class will be helpful. Their buddy will be there when they need a hug or even encouraging words when they are upset. I want to do whatever I can to make sure the students in my class are comfortable but I also do not want them to think it is ok to throw tantrums. After Shane is calmed down I will invite him to join the rest of the class. I will give him a hug or let him know in some other way how he can get my attention when his behavior is good. I do think that eventually Shane will get better. If...

Effectd of Violent Tv

...Imagination or Reality Children's viewing of violent TV shows, their identification with aggressive same-sex TV characters, and their perceptions that TV violence is realistic are all linked to later aggression as young adults, for both males and females. “That is the conclusion of a 15-year longitudinal study of 329 youth published in the March issue of Developmental Psychology, a journal of the American Psychological Association (APA)” . These findings hold true for any child from any family, regardless of the child's initial aggression levels, their intellectual capabilities, their social status as measured by their parents' education or occupation, their parents' aggressiveness, or the mother's and father's parenting style. Violent shows for children and teens are far too common. Aggression can begin from constantly seeing these violent images.
