This does not entail that BI Norwegian School of Management has cleared the methods applied, the results presented, nor the conclusions drawn” Jotun China – All the Colours in the World Executive summary Jotun Kemisk Fabrik A/S was founded in March 1926, operating only in Norway until 1962 when it began to expand internationally. Today Jotun operates in more than 70 countries, and is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of paints and coatings. Jotun has been in the Chinese market since 1983, initially focusing only on marine coatings and protective coatings where the brand became very successful. Encouraged by this, Jotun China decided to enter the Chinese decorative paint market in 2001 with the long term goal of becoming the market’s leading brand. However, after 8 years in the Chinese decorative paint market, Jotun China has not been able to replicate its previous successes. Therefore, we the authors of this thesis, working in collaboration with Jotun China staff, set out first to determine the viability of Jotun’s latest strategy for the Chinese decorative paint market, and second to suggest concrete steps to follow if and when executing this strategy. Our findings...

...for integer programming is the linear programming model (see Sec. 3.2) with the one additional restriction that the variables must have integer values. If only some of the variables are required to have integer values (so the divisibility assumption holds for the rest), this model is referred to as mixed integer programming (MIP). When distinguishing the all-integer problem from this mixed case, we call the former pure integer programming. For example, the Wyndor Glass Co. problem presented in Sec. 3.1 actually would have been an IP problem if the two decision variables x1 and x2 had represented the total number of units to be produced of products 1 and 2, respectively, instead of the production rates. Because both products (glass doors and wood-framed windows) necessarily come in whole units, x1 and x2 would have to be restricted to integer values. Another example of an IP problem is provided by the prize-winning OR study...

Organizational Theory

...Sexism in Organizations Joyce N. Vitalo Organizational Theory Dr. Lee Mahon December 17, 2011 Abstract In today’s workplace there is an emphasis on equality through trainings and programs that are intended to avoid sexism. The historical influence on the business world has shown for the last one hundred years a division of organizational leaders by gender. These divisions have been a part of organizational structure and slow to change. Historical Perspective of Sexism Women in the United States have been on a slow journey towards equality that has had many twists and turns over the last one hundred years. There have been many women who have helped to pull other women to the same level as men. The women of today are still pushing towards the same level of respect, responsibility and reward that men receive and have been receiving. Chapter one of History of Woman Suffrage Vol. I, opens with “As civilization advances there is a continual change in the standard of human rights. In barbarous ages the right of the strongest was the only one recognized; but as mankind progressed in the arts and sciences intellect began to triumph over brute force. Change is a law of life, and the development of society a natural growth…. In all periods of human development, thinking has been punished as a crime, which is reason sufficient to account for the general passive resignation of the masses to their conditions and environments.” (Cady Stanton, Anthony, Gage and...

China

...The Transformation of China from an Emerging Economy to a Global Powerhouse James R. Barth, Gerard Caprio Jr., and Triphon Phumiwasana Abstract Throughout the past three decades of fast growth, China has undergone tremendous structural changes in its economy and financial system. This chapter examines China’s evolving financial landscape so as to assess whether it can catch up with or even drive economic growth. China has achieved remarkable growth over the past quarter of a century despite a relatively inefficient financial system. Just as the public sector around the world has not proved to be an efficient manager of enterprises, it also has not been an efficient manager of banks. A solution that would seem to work in theory would be to grow the private sector’s role in the banking system, using banks that operate on market principles as a way to continually starve inefficient enterprises of credit, while supplying credit to the productive enterprises. Finding a way to make this work in practice will require both finesse and good fortune on a scale commensurate with China’s growing importance in the world economy. Keywords Bank Á Banking sector Á Financial market Á Big Four Á GDP Á Economic growth Á Financial system Á Trade Á Renminbi Á Exchange rate Á India Á Foreign exchange reserve Á Non-performing loan 1 Introduction China has captured the attention of the world with its unprecedented growth for such a big country during the past 30 years. These individuals and families live in substandard housing, with limited or no access to sanitation, potable water, and health care, have low levels of literacy, and earn very low incomes. Scholars and practitioners alike suggest that the problems existing in subsistence marketplaces demand the attention and involvement of responsible businesses and that doing business with consumers in such marketplaces can be both socially responsible and profitable. This research explores the strategies and tactics currently being used across commercial and social enterprises...
