In Shaun Tan’s, The Arrival, he takes us through the journey that most immigrants take to becoming accepted in their new country. Everyone wants to be accepted, no one wants to be an outcast. Throughout the novel it showed us that everyone has had different reasons to migrate to a new place, or run away, but after there is another big task ahead, and that’s being accepted in the new culture and trying to adapt to it. In part 2 when he is trying very hard to understand the questions being asked, you can tell that all he really wants is to be accepted into the new country, and the frustration of maybe not being accepted or probably not being allowed in builds on his face. What if the kid didn't like it or thought badly of it. He probably would never make another origami figure again. But the fact that he did accept the gift made the protagonist feel good about the gift now he will continue to make them. Knowing that you're doing something right, or do something that other people like in your new place will make you feel more comfortable because now you know that maybe there are things that you may have in common, or that you can bring into this new culture from your old one. Maybe you just feel like you won’t have to change you truly are much to fit in into your new environment. Also In part 4, previous to my last example, the protagonist was invited to eat with the merchant's family. That can also calm your nerves that give you more confidence in talking to people because you think that others in that area are just as friendly or even more friendly. Immigrants when they first come they are usually shy and don't talk much, but all it takes is that one person to introduce themselves to you so you can start a friendship. And before you know it you're in a group chat talking about who you think is cute. No one wants to be an outcast, no matter how many wall they put up, they want to be part of a group and have the friend. Everyone wants to be accepted, no matter the race, nationality, culture, social class, religion, or even species.
