The stories of ‘the magic pudding’ by Norman Lindsay and ‘Memorial’ by Shaun Tan reflect a strong Australian national identity. These stories reflect growth in Australian identity. Australia was settled by convicts, the rejects of England. This branded Australia as a blue collar working class society made up of scum. ‘Memorial’ by Shaun Tan & Gary Crew is story about a tree that gets chopped down. However the tree was symbolic of many great battles in which Australian fought in. The soldiers banded together in a blue collar like fashion and went into war, fighting in devastating battles.
