As the call for men came to defend their country African Americans joined the fight as well. During World War Two African Americans had the ‘Double V Campaign” which stands for victories at war and also on the homefront for equality. Being treated as equals and even friends during the war with white people once the African Americans returned home to racial discrimination they felt they deserved to be treated as equals.
The GI Bill was created so upon returning home veterans of the war could have an easier transition. With this being said African Americans did not receive these same rights. African Americans were often denied for buying certain homes especially if they were in a white community (845). Even if the did end up getting the loan and then were allowed to buy the house, their neighbors would not approve and would discriminate them. On a bus a women refused to give up her seat for a white woman (845). She then sued he bus company and the court ruled her case to be overturned because it violates the Constitution (845). In the case Shelley vs. Kraemer, it decided that they could not choose not to sell to you just because of your skin color (845). School systems were the next big accomplishment that was to be tackled. The schools were to be segregated but equal (845). Once the schools were pushed to be desegregated not all whites responded well (848). An example of this is the nine teenagers who attended Little Rock’s Central High School. These teenagers had to be escorted by soldier to and from school and even in between classes because of how badly they were treated by the whites at the school. Fighting for their rights was not an easy thing to do but in the end it got them to be where they are
