Everyone’s Son

The morning after Maudlin’s first N.F.L game, Lorenzo Maudlin IV woke up in a hospital. With very little memory, Maudlin did not remember the tackle that left him unconscious on the MetLife Stadium turf on September 13. His mother, Akima Lauderdale, an alcoholic with an affection for selling cocaine, has been in prison in Georgia. His Father, Lorenzo Maudlin III, served roughly 12 years in a California prison. Her release date is in July 31, 2023. But his father is now free, living in Sacramento. Maudlin does not speak to his father much, but in the last eight years, ever since his father was released from prison, he is considering rapprochement. Maudlin III watched his son’s local college games on television, but he had only seen him three times in the past decade. Though, He has never watched him play in person. Maudlin III – selling cocaine, surrounded by suspicious beings, passion for instant gratification, he has endured short stretches in jail before, one resulting from a woman’s death. Through selling, Maudlin III met Lauderdale, who became pregnant in 1992. On October 1, less than two weeks after court records show she was arrested by possession of cocaine, she went into labor. While Lauderdale still in police custody, she was taken to a hospital where Lorenzo Maudlin IV was born.
Lauderdale was released on her own recognizance by mistake. To hide from the police, Lauderdale moved among apartments. For a brief time, Maudlin IV stayed with his father. At some point Maudlin IV mother left for Georgia, where Mauldin IV, still a toddler, joined her shortly after. Maudlin IV went from Sacramento to Atlanta back and forth.
