Should animals be used for scientific research?
How many of you look at that pill you’re taking for that migraine or for that nasty sinus infection that has taken you down for the count and know that the animals used in the research are commonly subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, withheld food and water, burned and given other wounds to study the healing process, the infliction of pain to study the effects and treatment? They have even killed by asphyxiation, decapitation, and neck breaking stating they will be able to transfer the good of all of this barbaric treatment to help humans and animals.
Animals don’t deserve to be in pain and given diseases with a death sentence to try to prove that a certain medicine or product might work. Animals have feelings just like us humans. I challenge you to tell or even show me that your dog or cat does not have feelings or its own personality. You can’t do it. Why would that cat run or dog go curl up under a table when you yell at them for doing something wrong? Because, they have feelings and know right from wrong. They were taught this from a young age just like we teach our own children to behave.
There are alternative testing methods in today’s world that can replace the need for animal use. There are labs that do studying of cell structures in a petri dish. In-Vitro (in glass) testing. This type of testing can produce more relevant results than animal testing because human cells can be used. Micro dosing, the administering of doses too small to cause adverse reactions, can be used in human volunteers, whose blood is then analyzed. Artificial human skin, such as the commercially available products EpiDerm and ThinCert, is made from sheets of human skin cells grown in test tubes or plastic wells and can produce more useful results than testing chemicals on animal skin.

Should Animals Be Used for Scientific Research?

...Should Animals be used for Scientific Research? Kari Lundquist Composition II Susan Cochran February 11th, 2012 Abstract Animal research is needed for many uses for our scientists. Should animals be used for scientific research? We do need to make sure that their rights are accepted, that they are not in pain for the experiment, and that they are cared for prior and after the research. There are many advantages to why animals should be used for scientific research. The evidence and their rights show that when animals are used for research they are cared for scientifically. While in the same time animals have their own way of showing when they are in pain during a research project. Animal research provides educational research for our scientists and for what is needed to be accomplished. With the knowledge that humans have in today’s century, if they know that the research will cause pain to the animals it should need further approvals in order to move forward with the research project. Keywords: animal rights, animal pain, animal care Should Animals be used for Scientific Research? Today scientific research is always needed for educational purposes such as how to eliminate/reduce killing diseases and to see if the tested research is worth the act of scientists to move forward. Many people agree that using animals to do such research is beneficial to humans and non-humans. The evidence shows that when animals are used for research they are cared for...

Should Animals Be Used for Scientific Research? Is It Humanly?

...Should Animals Be Used For Scientific Research? Is It Humanly? What should you protect, animals or human lives? It is factual to protect both parties but what matters is how the civic understands the issue. Conferring to me, I consider animal testing vital although in some cases it sounds as an abuse to animals due to many discoveries from trying these drugs on them. If you deny this, do you imagine our lives without antibiotics, insulin, vaccines, organ transplantation, HIV treatments, heart- bypass surgery and many others? On the point of view, the use of animals is a controversial issue and many people sight it inversely, that is, the treatment of the animals and the reasoning behind testing on these animals if it’s for a greater cause or not. There are those who wonder if animals are treated realistically and whether they are cared for appropriately. However, some think it is the best way to learn the effects of substances in living body and possible ways of saving millions of lives. With one animal’s response to either a drug or new procedure of surgery, it allows scientists to observe effects on living tissues under controlled circumstances since animals are a match to humans and for that reason more deaths are eluded. Another essential aspect of animal testing is to ensure the safety of drugs and other substances human beings are exposed to. Researchers are also allowed to scale the safety of drugs before trying them in humans hence saving and improving the quality...

Should Animal Be Used for Scientific Research? Is It Humanly?

...humans and animals are different. Animals do not have some rights as humans because there "is no morality for them and animals do any moral wrong. Therefore it is impossible to empower the same rights to humans and animals, and animals should not be considered for the same position as humans. For example, the laws of human provide us a guarantee that every person has the right of not being hurt. If the application is also suitable to the animal, of course scientists should not be allowed to use animals in the experiments, but the laws of the animal world cannot offer that, because of the fact that wild animals prey on other animals for their food. It is conceivable that animals do not have a sense of duty like people, so they should not be equated with human beings. However, using animals for scientific experiments should not be argued. Using animals is not mistreating animals, the use of scientific research has a more meaningful and essential purpose. Secondly animal testing standards are acceptable as they are controlled by many laws and regulations. In Australia, all research and teaching that involves the use of animals must be according to the "Australian code of Practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes." Each animal testing must be assessed by an" institutional Animal Ethics Committee (AEC)". The AEC decides whether or not an experiment can be conducted, and can place provisions on the numbers of animals used. The AEC prevents animals from being...

Why Animal Testing Should Be Prohibited

...Why Animal Testing should be Prohibited Alexandria McConnell 6/4/2015 ENG/130 Maureen Chisholm It is estimated that about 26 million animals are being used every year in the US for scientific and commercial research. They are used for many different things such as medical developments, the safety of products, and many other health care and cosmetic uses. While there are some laws in place that prevent the abuse of animals in these testing laboratories, many of these test subjects face cruel and inhumane treatment. There are alternative and equally effective ways to study and conduct research for such treatments, and although there have been proven benefits to some of the research conducted on these defenseless animals, the harsh effects of the experiments should not be overlooked or ignored. Animals are put through excruciating pain and usually given no anesthesia or relief during many of the test experiments performed in these laboratories. They are often forced to ingest and inhale deadly concoctions to study whether or not it would be safe for human consumption. It is also not uncommon for them to be deprived of food and water for prolonged periods of time. Animal test subjects are also being intentionally injured to study the healing process and the effects of pain and remedies of such, and sometimes purposely killed. A common test performed is the LD50, or lethal dose 50. This test involves giving animal large doses of chemicals to find out how much will kill...

Cost Benefit Analysis

...ANIMAL PROCEDURES COMMITTEE REVIEW OF COST-BENEFIT ASSESSMENT IN THE USE OF ANIMALS IN RESEARCH JUNE 2003 REPORT OF THE COST-BENEFIT WORKING GROUP OF THE ANIMAL PROCEDURES COMMITTEE PREFACE Letter to the Minister from Michael Banner, Chair of the Animal Procedures Committee 17 June 2003 Dear Ms Flint ANIMAL PROCEDURES COMMITTEE: RECOMMENDATIONS ON COST-BENEFIT ASSESSMENT UNDER THE ANIMALS (SCIENTIFIC PROCEDURES) ACT 1986 On behalf of the Animal Procedures Committee I enclose the Committee’s report on cost-benefit assessment. In it we address the adequacy of the current cost-benefit assessment performed in the course of evaluating project licence applications. We have sought to look at the many issues which arise in relation to this important element of the regulation of the use of animals, but would draw attention to three particular aspects of our work. In the first place we have addressed the fundamental question as to scientific validity of the use of animals. We believe that our considerations and conclusions offer an important clarification of the debate and fulfil the request made by your predecessor, Mike O’Brien, to provide advice on this issue. Secondly, while we conclude that some uses of animals may yield scientific knowledge, we argue that this does not settle the question of justification. We go on to elucidate the full range of factors which must be considered for there to be a rigorous application of the cost-benefit assessment. Thirdly, we also consider how...

...Name: Tutor: Course: College: Date: Animals in Biomedical Research From history, man depends on animals for survival, either as mode of transport or source of food. However, animals are used for many other purposes in the current world. Scientists are using animals for experimenting and testing drugs that prescribed to cure many diseases, for instance, HIV/AIDS. For many years, animals’ experiments have been used to discover new ailments and the drugs that could cure them. However, there are so many organizations that are trying to fight for animal rights by preventing animal experiments. Stopping the use of animals for scientific research can hinder progress in new findings and discoveries in the health sector. Animals have been used for scientific research because their body functions are almost similar to that of human beings. Human suffering should be drastically reduced as a first priority by ensuring that the humans don’t die because simple and treatable diseases. Animal suffering and death should come as a second priority after taking care of humans needs. Scientists should be able to use animals for research to prevent any possible deaths in human beings. Disease like tumors can be experimented and tested on animals and not on man to avoid suffering of human beings. Health of human beings has advanced due research carried out on animals. Major killers like diabetes heart attack and cancer have been treated well due to improved medicine. Some diseases mostly...

Essay On Animal Testing

...Research on animals, either dead or alive, is useless. The words “animal” and “research” both revolve around the ‘golden rule’. Respect for each other is key to living. It doesn't matter if you are human, animal, plant, or just an object (Ball, Norris 35-44). Everything on Earth has an effect. Animals are being hurt, neglected, and abused everyday (Singer 17-25). For all these reasons, Animals should not be used for scientific, cosmetic, or commercial testing. First, animals that undergo testing are put through both physical and emotional pain everyday. The emotional pain these animals are put through at a young age is jaw dropping. Millions of animals every year are taken prematurely from their mothers or caregivers (Spun 1). Animals would have grown to help the environment and humans, but instead, being taken away at such an early age, never had the chance to experience what some can (PETA 1). Medical students have learned what they need without the use of animals, which proves more qualified scientists can too (PETA 1). Most animals that are used for testing are rarely exposed to daylight or proper social and mental care because of the tiny enclosures they are kept in (Spun 1). The need for sunlight, especially at an early age,...

Animal Research

...Argumentative Essay.docx2/ 4 Baneen ZiaUH Honors CollegeEvery year, millions of animals suffer tremendous pain as a result of scientific studies, commercial testing, and medical research in the United States. Animal testing, the method of using non—humans in means of research, requires the captivity of animal in order to experiment for human breakthroughs and advancements. Although a few of the countless experiments performed contribute to the act of improving lives through the discovery of cures, researchers risk the lives of many and harm these animals in the process. The natural lives of animals become disrupted and these animals forcefully enter studies in which they will most likely undergo pain or, unfortunately, death. The unjust and inhumane treatment of animals in experimentations to innovate and benefit the human race is unnecessary, misleading, and unethical, and therefore, should not be performed for biomedical research. Animal testing estimates 26 million animals used for biomedical research each year in America. By testing the toxicity of drugs or the effectiveness of medications, scientists use animals to understand the human body without actually causing harm to it. The three methods of testing include toxicology research, pure research, and applied research for an under the intentionof discovering effects of such medications and bearing direct outcomes. Scientific researchers use animals to understand the human anatomy without causing impairment to the human race...

Why Is Animal Testing Unethical

...Animal testing is defined as “the use of non-human animals in research and development projects, especially for purposes of determining the safety of substances such as food or drugs” (“Animal Testing”). Unfortunately, some cosmetic companies treat animals unethically during testing; this brings into question whether or not the practice of animal testing can be considered ethical, or even necessary, in regards to cosmetic purposes. Those with pro-animal testing views may argue that the practice of testing cosmetics on animals is necessary for human safety, however, with modern advances in technology, there are now more options for alternatives than ever before. With support from major companies and governments, alternatives to animal testing could potentially become the standard in the near future. Those who support animal testing argue that animal testing in cosmetics is necessary to ensure that the product is safe for human use. They argue that “there is no adequate alternative to testing on a living whole-body system” (“Should Animals Be Used for Scientific or Commercial Testing”), and this is why “animals are appropriate research subjects because . . . animals and humans are so biologically similar” (“Should Animals Be Used for Scientific or Commercial Testing”). Humans are biologically similar to animals in...

Animal Testing? Is It Unethical?

...Animal Experimentation: Unethical or Unnatural? Animal research has had a vital role in many scientific and medical advances of the past century and continues to aid our understanding of various diseases. Throughout the world, people enjoy a better quality of life because of these advances, and the subsequent development of new medicines and treatments are all made possible by animal research. However, the use of animals in scientific and medical research has been a subject of heated debate for many years. Opponents to any kind of animal research, including both extreme sides of animal-activist groups believe that animal experimentation is cruel and unnecessary, regardless of its purpose or benefit. There is no middle ground for these groups; they want the immediate and total abolition of all animal research. If they succeed, it would have enormous and severe consequences for scientific research. Animal experimentation has been practiced since ancient times, when the ancient Greeks killed and dissected animals for scientific and religious purposes. Vivisection continued throughout ancient times and into the Christian era, becoming a replacement for human dissection when the Catholic Church banned autopsies. Animals were treated as insensitive objects, mere automatons incapable of pain or emotion. By the 1800s, science and medicine were moving forward at unprecedented rates. Germs were discovered and vaccines invented; pills were created and diseases eradicated. Animals were...

Sampling Design Plan

...Ways to Animal Testing In the world today, science has seen its better days. Scientific methods developed and invented scientists have been used to demonstrate and explain almost everything in the world. Researchers studying biological issues have produced reports informing about the issues that surround us. For example, in tests that require human spacemen have been conducted using non-human animals for biological animal testing all over the world. Research has shown that about 100 million vertebrates are used for animal tests in the world every year; it has been reported that about 20 million rats were used within the United States for testing in 2001 (Hart, Wood, & Hart 35). This is alarming as far as animal protection issues are concerned. Animal rights organizations have however differed with these reports about the same issues raising havoc in matters of biological testing (Hunnicutt 65). This contradiction raises ethical issues in the field of scientific research requiring quick reconciliation of both groups to solve the problems of slowed critical medical researches; the Last Chance for Animals (LCA) and the Foundation for Biomedical Research (FBR) are an example of such differing research bodies. The Last Chance for Animals advocates for the abolition of the practise while FBR finds the practice legitimate and significant. This paper concentrates at the differing points of view of Last Chance for Animals and The Foundation for Biomedical Research, and provides...

Animal Research

...Animal testing has been a hot topic of discussion in society for many years. The debate is whether or not animal testing should be allowed. Some people believe that animal testing is wrong and that it causes undue harm to animals. Throughout the last 150 years, the practice of using animals for research has been under intense scrutiny between animal activists and researchers. Scientists insist that the experimental research they do is essential for producing effective drugs, and the animal rights activists believe that testing animals for advancements in medicine is not necessary. I believe that research using animals should continue as long as there is a reason for it to continue. Thanks to animal based research, to date millions of human lives have been saved. Animal testing is the only way to find out if vaccinations work for different diseases. We cannot just ask people off the streets to volunteer, as that would be morally and ethically wrong. At this time, scientific researchers have no alternatives for testing new drugs, as scientific computer modules can only do so much for testing. Also, the government has strong laws in place to ensure the health and welfare of test animals. As long as there is disease and sickness in the world, scientists will always be looking for the next cure and treatment options, so we will always need to have animal research. As long as the animals are treated humanely, I believe that it would be inhumane to the human race to stop animal research...

Why Is Animal Testing Wrong

...Is Testing Products on Animals Wrong? Animals are pets to most. We care for them and treat them like our own. Most people have a pet that they love and could not imagine their life without. But, just imagine your pet being an experiment. Animals are used for research for medicine, chemicals, cosmetics, etc. everyday. Animals are being killed everyday due to research. A lot of people believe that using animals as a research experiment is wrong and some believe it is a necessary procedure. Even though animal testing supposedly has a lot of benefits, animal testing is not always accurate and almost always harms the animals. Animals are used everyday for research. That means that millions of animals are being held captive and injured during this procedure. Most believe that this is inhumane and not accurate. Using animals for research is not always accurate. Studies show that “95% of drugs that pass the animal testing stage are immediately discarded because they are useless or harmful to humans” (Stachura 1). Animals and humans are different, that is what it comes down to. Just because a medication did not harm an animal does not mean it will not harm a human. There are more than 100,000 deaths a year in America from FDA-approved medications (Archibald 1)....

...Animal Animosity Often times, we reach desperate measures in order to fulfill a necessity. Accordingly, it may or may not be classified as evilness. Either way, desperate times cause for desperate measures. In order to find life-savers, such as cures and treatments, scientists construct experiments using animal testing. Considering the fact that human beings and animals are similar, I do not debunk the idea of using animals in scientific labs. Due to the fact that human beings have amendments that animals do not, animal testing is sufficiently instrumental, because of the their similar living systems, because they do not have the rights and moral judgments that human beings do, and because animal usage incidentally goes on with or without the works of scientist lab experiments. Of course, the accurate way is not at all considerate in animals’ defense, but it is necessary. Lab research is required in order to find cures of common diseases, and animals are the best scapegoat to these experiments. For example, authors of “Animal Testing: Pros and Cons” recorded that chimpanzees share 99% of their DNA with humans, and mice are 98% genetically identical to humans. Because animals and human beings are both mammals, they derived from the same ancestors, and share the same organ system. Genetically, animals are the closest aspects of nature to human beings. As “” states, “even the most supercomputers are unable to accurately simulate the workings of complex organs such as the brain...
