When it comes to the discussion regarding the issue whether or not college athletes, specifically football players, should get paid I am a firm believer there exists only two groups. Those who believe they should get paid, and those who don’t know enough information and believe they shouldn’t. Now I must specify, because I don’t believe that all athletes should get paid, but I’ll handle them after I address football players. There is without question a necessity for football players to receive compensation for what they do. They are essentially professional athletes that are working full-time second jobs. In terms of football, there practice hours are limited, just as the case in the NFL per the Collective Bargaining Agreement. They have to watch hours of game tape, go to hours of meetings, and then after they are completely exhausted they have to worry about their second job. Obviously they aren’t held to the same standard as regular applicants and people on scholarships so therefore they aren’t held to the same standards in terms of minimum GPA, but they still struggle all the same to adhere to these guidelines. While they may be able to take an easier course load, this is largely based upon the fact that due to their jam packed schedules they don’t have time to take, and succeed in, any other courses. Returning to my earlier point, the reason I believe college football players should get paid is because of the revenue the school generates, and essentially steals from them. In a recent Business Insider article, a University of Texas football player was valued at $578,000. Is scholarship, room etc. worth that much? Didn’t think so. The issue with other sports getting paid is that they generally are money losers. Football, and occasionally basketball, subsidize these sports and make it possible for them to be played. So in these instances I believe that the

...organization, but do not get paid themselves. This scenario is true for college athletes. They put in work every week and end up bringing in money for the school that they attend. Athletes take countless hours every day to train for their sport. The main sports, mainly men’s college basketball and football, end up making money. College athletes should get paid because they bring in money for the college, acting as representatives of the school. College athletes spend about forty hours per week dedicated to their sport. Whether they end up going pro or not, they still need a sense of how to manage their money once they are out of college and on their own. Should College Athletes Get Paid

...College Athletics: Career vs. Experience The Debate Some college athletes and their supporters have debated over the years that students should be paid a salary. Those who are in disagreement argue that intercollegiate athletics should be viewed as one part of the college experience and not a career. They express that athletes are already receiving payment in the form of scholarships. But is it enough? Most scholarships cover approximately $20,000 to $35,000 worth of college expenses, including books, fees, tuition, and room and board (Brian, 2014). The Numbers Looking at the research provided by the National Athletic Trainer’s association, approximately 200,000 injuries are reported by college athletes caused by the strenuous nature of their sport (Thomas, 2014). Nearly 30% of these injuries have been chalked up to “over-use” injuries (injuries caused by long training sessions and repetitive motions), with women making up 62% of those injuries, and are more commonly found in low-contact sports. “Overuse injuries may present not only physical challenges but also psychological ones that could significantly affect an athlete’s recovery and performance” said Tracey Covassin, a co-author of a study for the Journal of Athletic Training publication that researches injuries and their impact on college athletes (Cody, 2012). Another aspect of this problem that needs attention is what happens to these student athletes that have career-ending or long-term disabilities due to injuries...

College athletes should not be paid for these three reasons: college tuition should be enough money, the NCAA is a non-profit organization, and the college athletic departments will not be able to afford to pay the players. z College athletes get a scholarship and free tuition which costs enough so they do not need to get paid.
