Should Genetically Modified Foods Be Labeled?

When it comes to genetically modified foods (GMO), one could argue either for or against the labeling of food products containing GMO’s. In this essay I intend to inform you on both sides and hopefully by the end you can make an informed decision on your own to see if you're for or against the labeling of genetically modified foods.
People believe genetically modified food should be labeled because consumers should know what they’re eating. Heather Haddon made a statement in which she said that “A vast majority of corn and soybeans grown in the US is genetically engineered and the Grocery Manufacturers Association trade group estimates that 70% to 80% of foods eaten in the US contain ingredients that have genetically modified.” When food producers insert genes into food products, they don't necessarily know what is happening to the genes or where it's going or what it’s modifying, which is a hazard because it can create allergens or toxins in the food. Central Dogma isn’t what it's believed to be to the point that even American scientists at the US National Human Genome Research Institute do not fully understand its complexity. Although the federal regulators approved the GMO seeds, they can still make consumers sick so therefore consumers should be informed that GMOs are being put in their food. …show more content…
