Many parents, employers, and teachers try to push their teens to go to bed and wake up early for the day. Which is good, the earlier you wake up means that more can be done, right? Well this is easier said than done for most teenagers. According to respected New York Times author Nancy Kalish, “The average teenager doesn’t actually produce melatonin (a sleep-inducing hormone) until about 11:00 p.m.” This proves that it is very difficult for students, such as teenagers, to fall asleep soon enough to make it to school early. Starting school later has many benefits, therefore I believe school start times should be pushed further. To begin with, when teenagers get to sleep in, overall attendance increases. Nancy Kalish states that “insufficient sleep among children has been linked to obesity and to learning issues like attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.” This is a very serious problem in teenagers and we should do everything we can to reduce that. When schools push back start times they see an average increase in academic performance countywide. Finally, safety issues can occur when school is earlier. Participation in class, and rarely bullying can occur, due to students waking up and not being ready for the day, but being forced into it. The Fox News Associated Press has reported that when classes started eighty-minutes later, teen crash rates dropped 16.5 percent! Teens are easily angered, especially when being forced to do something. In conclusion, it is a very large debate on if school should start earlier, later, or simply not change. After researching the topic, and viewing both sides with an open mind, I have concluded that school would be better off starting later. Due to various improvements in attendance, behavior, dropout rates, academic success, and athletic participation, I believe schools everywhere should at least try starting at a later time. Even thirty minutes can make a great

Why High School Should Start Later

...Jenah Cooney May 15, 2012 College English/Surinak Senior Research Paper Period 2 Wake Up Later and Your Grades Will Be Greater High school is a part of every teenager’s life whether they like it or not. Although it is not a requirement; most, if not all, teenagers will experience at least one year of high school. With the experience of high school, students will also go through waking up early sometimes at five or six a.m. The starting time of high schools has been highly debated for several years. Those who debate this topic usually dispute on whether or not changing the time would be beneficial. Psychologists estimate that as many as 30% of children may have a sleep disorder at some point during childhood. Sleep disorders have implications both for social-emotional adjustment and for school performance. For this reason it is important for both parents and educators to understand how sleep works and how disruptions in normal sleep patterns can affect children and teenagers. Starting school just a half an hour later would benefit the most families and students, and also to accommodate for teens' sleep needs. One of the main beneficial topics to argue for starting school later is attendance. Schools should start later because it is proven that students will have higher attendance. If students can get more sleep, they are more likely to attend school on a regular basis. Studies have shown that after puberty, teenagers require more sleep, around nine and a half...

...brush teeth, eat, catch the bus, go to school. No one wants to get up in the morning and most people would agree. The average start time for high schools in America is 8:03 which is before the recommended start time of 8:30. Why does school start early? The majority of U.S. middle and high schools start their school days too early, not letting young people get enough sleep for development and academic success. One of the reasons schools should start later is that they are not starting at the recommended time set by the American Academy of Pediatrics of 8:30. A new study was published from the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) that states that less than one in five middle and high schools in America starts...

...Students wake up very early to go to school, sometimes earlier than their parents. The issue of early start-times for schools may be the reason why students sleep in past their alarm clocks. High schools should start later in the day because then students could get more hours of sleep, students would be safer behind the wheel, and students would actually have an appetite for a nice breakfast and not feel so rushed. To begin with, high school students should receive 8-10 hours of sleep on a regular basis. As far back as 1999, a member of Congress introduced a resolution to make school start times later. Addressing the resolution, representative Zoe Lofgren said, “Over time, sleep deprivation leads to serious consequences for academic achievement, social behavior, and the health and safety of our nation’s youth”. Students who get less than 8 hours of sleep a night were ⅔ likely to get injured than those who do. If you get more sleep, you won’t be drowsy and clumsy. Also, the issue of inadequate sleep for students has been brought to the attention of the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They realized that over 40 states had students starting school earlier than 8:30 a.m. There is proven facts that a lack of sleep causes higher rates of obesity and higher rates in motor vehicle...

Why High School Should Start Later

...High school is a very important time in teenager's lives. They have many things going on and important decisions to make. I know this because I'm a teenager. To start an hour later would be great, but at the same time would cause too many problems. That is why I believe high school shouldn't start an hour later. However, starting school at our normal time is harming students. According to sleep experts, "[t]ypical sleep cycles begin around 11 PM for teenagers and continue through 8 AM "(Start School Later, Inc). This means that students only get around six or seven hours of sleep per school night and wakes students up in the middle of deep sleep. In contrast, parents oppose teens to start later. Mary Carskadon, a professor of psychiatry and human behavior stated, "parents are often reluctant to have teens start later, because they rely on having older children at home in the afternoons to take care of their younger siblings "(Richmond). This is because many...

Making this change would not be a good idea. Many high school students have part time jobs in high school. Having to go to school later in the day may cut hours at work for the students. Those that have jobs most likely drive a car and have to pay insurance and make car payments...
