Repeat that, repeat,
Cuckoo, bird, and open ear wells, heart-springs, delightfully sweet,
With a ballad, with a ballad, a rebound
Off trundled timber and scoops of the hillside ground, hollow hollow hollow ground:
The whole landscape flushes on a sudden at a sound.

Author: Gernard Manley Name: Repeat that Repeat Def: a simple narrative poem of folk origin, composed in short stanzas adapted for singing

Blank Verse:

The world is a heavy boulder, both in bulk and severity...
We can lighten the burden - it’s up to you and up to me... Let me be a beautiful balloon, my string tied to the earth below.
Add each of you to help me pull us upward and onward as our goal. Each laugh, each smile of each day makes the air grow fuller with love
There may be sorrow below us, but we can sigh and rise above... Balloons, we can be, with our strings tethered to a weary earth.
Rising skyward to a higher objective, giving us each a new and brighter worth.

Birth Control

...Birth Control: Availability to Teens. Many teenagers today are very sexually active and take the risk that comes with sexual intercourse. Education is our number once source in getting sexual information out to our teens: “We have got to start educating our teenagers by introducing the ABC's for sexual education. "A-abstinence; B-be faithful; C-latex condoms." (Rosenthal 113). A type of contraceptive, also called birth control, is to do just that: control birth. Teen and teen births are greatly rising over the years due to lack of education, contraceptives, and finances. Teenagers now days do not wait till a certain age to become sexually active, more and more teens are starting at a younger age. Whether they are having sex or engaging in another form of sexual activity. “The principle behind age-of-consent law is that teens below a certain age are not mature enough to make an intelligent decision about engaging in sexual activity. Twenty-six states set the age of consent for medical making decisions at twelve years of age, yet no state sets the age sexual consent at less than sixteen. Some states provide no provisions for sexual relations between teens of the same age, provided that they are older than twelve, but there is always a penalty if one of the partners is a certain number of years older. Teens are no better prepared to make decisions about their medical health; so then the school or other public authority should inform the parents. Supporters of the lower age...

Sex Ed

...Abstinence-Only vs. Comprehensive Sex Education The appropriate type of sex education that should be taught in United States public schools continues to be a major topic of debate, which is motivated by high teen pregnancy and birth rates in the United States compared to other countries. This debate is centered on whether abstinence-only or comprehensive sex education should be taught in public schools. Some argue that sex education, that covers safe sexual practices, such as condom use, sends a mixed message to students, and actually promotes sexual activity. The United States government used to promote abstinence-only initiatives through the Adolescents Family Life Act. It cost 176 million dollars annually to fund abstinence-only programs. The central message of these programs was to delay sexual activity until marriage, and cannot include information about contraception and condoms (Stranger-Hall & Hall, 2011). It has been proven that abstinence-only education does not have an effect on the birth rates in the United States, but comprehensive sex education has. Teaching students to not only about abstinence, but about contraceptive use and information about sexually transmitted diseases, has decreased the birth rates in the United States as well as the contraction rate of sexually transmitted diseases. Comprehensive sex education in school has been proven to work, and is the method that schools need to stick with in order to keep making these positive changes. There has always...

Safe Sex

...evolution of the “family” and bi-racial adoption are all extremely controversial issues discussed in public schools today. As you can imagine sex isn’t the most comfortable subject to speak about especially amongst children and their parents. The fact remains that it is of paramount importance for your child to learn all possible advantages and disadvantage of sex. Communication plays an important role in the development of intimate sexuality. (Troth p195-218) Today, as young people embark on their first sexual relationships in a threatening climate of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including the potentially fatal HIV/AIDS virus, the value of practicing communication and negotiation to facilitate the uptake of safe sex has far-reaching implications for health and well-being. However, communication between parents and are a bit uncomfortable with topics like condoms, STDs, and past sexual partners is a difficult task for many young people whose health may be placed in jeopardy by their inability to discuss safe sex. Public schools are now making sex education apart of their curriculum. However, the controversy arises as to whether sex education should be based on abstinence or a “safe sex” model. Critics of the “safe sex” program claim that teaching safe sex is another way of giving consent to engage in intercourse. Isn’t the bigger issue ensuring that students are prepared for any type of situation they find themselves in? What good is abstinence based course if they...

Sex Education: Truth or Taboo?

...(“Statistics on Teen Pregnancy” Question 1). However, the government chooses to only fund abstinence programs in schools. If a school chooses to have an abstinence plus birth control program, the government will not present them with any federal funds to help cover the costs of the program (Lindberg, Laura, Duberstein, and Isaac Maddow-Zimet 332). Not only will the government refuse to fund the program, but the parents are also scared such courses will negatively influence their children and churches say it goes against moral conduct. The church argument should be invalid if our country wants to live up to the separation of church and state. The church should not be able to dictate what students learn. However, that is beside the point. Until schools have the backing of the community and parents, this will not be changed. The media also plays a big role in negative influences on teen pregnancy. In my opinion, this is something that classes could change. Deciding on who should receive this education is another debate. Everyone should receive this education. The information is very helpful and useful. When asked about sex education, Helen B. Shaffer had this to say, “while sex education in the schools has become fairly prevalent, much of it still skirts around the very questions on which young people need more knowledge, understanding, and guidance” (Section 1 Paragraph 3). Students may have questions even if they have never had any formal sex education classes. Because sexual activities...

Teenage Pregnancy

...countries. Two points are being argued: the rate of teenage pregnancy rate has declined in the US, but it remains very high; and the rate of teenage pregnancy is on the rise in China. Analysis of why the rate declines but remains high in the US and why it rises in China is also given in the paper. It is followed by a comparison between the situation in the US and China. Finally, this paper concludes with an overall summary of the issue and the conclusion of the causes discussed in the paper. Teenage pregnancy – an old problem in the US, a new issue in China Introduction When mentioned about teenage pregnancy 10 years ago, most of us must think that it mainly happens in the US; while China is never taken into consideration. However, now, ten years later, you can no longer think so. The problem is concerned in both the US and China, and is becoming worldwide. In the US, although owing to some effective programs and better sex education teenage pregnancy rate has declined during the past twenty years, statistics show that the US still has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy compared with other fully industrialized countries, such as the Netherlands. The situation in China is by no means better. Researches show that Teenage pregnancy, which may have never been heard of by many Chinese, is on the rise in China. There are many causes of the remaining high rate in the US and the recent rising rate in China. Although much work had been done, and some have been effective...

The Failure of Abstinence-Only Programs

...but many students finish sex education classes with a distorted view of sexuality and without a good understanding of contraception and safe-sex practices. Instead, children only learn that they should not have sex until they are married. Abstinence-only programs in public schools have become popular because of a law giving millions of dollars to schools that teach the programs. These programs have the good intention of persuading young people to wait until marriage before having sex, but abstinence-only programs are not achieving this goal and are flawed by the distorted and biased perspective that they promote. In 1996, the United States government passed a law giving funding to states that offered abstinence-only programs in public schools. Since this time, over half of a billion dollars has been given to states to promote abstinence-only programs (Brody). To receive the money, schools must agree to follow a set of rules. The rules indicate that a school’s abstinence-only program must have "as its exclusive purpose teaching the social, psychological, and health gains to be realized by abstaining from sexual activity" ("Impacts"). Students must be taught that they are likely to suffer harmful effects if they have sex before marriage. They also must be taught that the "expected standard" is for school-age children not to engage in sexual activity and for adults to engage in sexual relations only within marriage. Schools receiving the funds must teach students that they...

Immigration

...relatives who migrate to the US, eliminating the refugee portion of immigrants, denying more, but not all, government services to illegal immigrants, controlling the southern border with more manpower and better technology, and establishing a national verification database. The optimal policy from an economic perspective should seek to provide U.S. businesses with the labor they require without placing added burden on the taxpayers. Before specific policies can be addressed, it is crucial that immigrants be separated into four categories: legal, working-age immigrants; legal, elderly immigrants; refugees; and illegal immigrants. These groups are radically different, and they must be addressed differently. Universally cutting legal immigration levels would deprive businesses of labor resources that have allowed them to grow. Businesses benefit greatly in terms of increased labor availability. Immigrants usually have a higher percentage of college degrees than people now living in this country, and thus they contribute greatly to the filling of higher-skilled jobs. George J. Should Gay Marriage Be Overturned

...1. Should the decision to allow gay marriage across the country be overturned? I believe gay marriage should not be overturned because it is not our right. As a texan and being individualistic/conservative like many others, the right to marry should be left to the personal opinion of the individual not everyone else's. No one person should tell the other they can't marry someone they wish to marry. I personally think people should just accept or at least look away from gay marriage if they are against it. One should worry for their own life and not others, therefore I believe that marriage should not be overturned, but rather be left alone. The negative of Gay marriage is that originally and socially marriage is supposed to be between...

Should Sex Education Be Taught in School

...Should Sex Education Be Taught In School? Kierra Cobb Dr. Gwendoline Ayuninjam EDU1301-02 November 24, 2014 Abstract Sex education is a big controversial issue today in society. The debate over sex education in the United States centers on the question of who should teach students about issues relating to sex such as intercourse, pregnancy, contraception, gender identity, sexual orientation, sexually transmitted diseases, and relationships. Should sex education be left up to parents, or do schools have a responsibility to inform students about these issues? There are many people who support the idea of sex education being taught in school, and there are others who do not agree. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) survey, more than 47 percent of all high school students say they have had sex; and 15 percent of high school students have had sex with four or more partners during their lifetime. It also states that among students’ who had sex in the three months prior to the survey, sixty-percent reported condom use and twenty-three percent reported birth control pills usage during their last sexual encounter (NCSL,2013). Sex Education provides positive feedback about sexuality and sexual expressions, including benefits of abstinence, the sexual reproductive system, and also relationships. There are several pros and cons towards teaching sex education in all school systems. Sex education is not predominantly about sex. Other issues originate...
