SHOULD PARENTS PUSH THEIR CHILDREN TO EXCEL IN SPORTS

Most parents use sports as a tool to promote a sense of teamwork, discipline, and togetherness. But are parent’s obsessions to have their children excelling at top of their game too much. Most parents live through their children’s ability to do well at sport. Parents have participated in their children’s games by being energetic, cheering and encouraging their child performance. Some parents have been known to push too much and focus entirely on performance and excelling at the game. The effects of this are shown to be negative for the child. Parents feel that there is a need to help their children be first in sports and look at finishing second as being behind or even being a loser. When the child is motivated from the parent, they may feel a sense of encouragement and approval for the sport that they play. This is dangerous because this may affect their self-esteem level and the child may be dependent on the sport to meet the parent’s approval. Because of the child attempting to please the parent, they pushed them too hard and create an injury. This could result in a continuous struggle for the child and displeasure from the parent. Again this plays against the child self-esteem. In conclusion, most parents must remember that these are only children. Their bodies are still developing and because they do not finish first doesn’t make them behind or a loser. In our opinion, in order to win, you must learn to lose. Parents should teach the child that winning is not the only thing in life; understanding is a necessity to winning at life. If anything losing teaches a person or a child how to learn to win in adverse situation and even life situation as well as build character.
