Should Public School Students be required to wear uniform?
Many public school systems are joining ranks with private schools and are implementing school uniforms, as many educators believe that students who wear uniforms perform better academically in school. All schools should require their students to wear uniforms because wearing uniforms can help resist peer pressure to buy trendy clothes. Also, students will not buy these clothes, because they cannot wear them to school. Children and teens usually express themselves through their clothes. When students are made to wear the uniforms, they can’t do this. This will cause students to express themselves through their actions and their words. When every student is wearing a uniform, no one will be able to tell who the rich students are and who the poorer students are. This will cause students to not bully others because of their clothes. In addition, students will make friends with each other, not through appearance, but through personality. If uniforms were required, it will help identify students, and keep organization. Uniforms play an important role with organization in public schools. The School Board makes the rules and enforces them. Students know what to wear and what not to wear. Students come to school well organized and prepared to learn. In addition, everyone looks professional. Because Public schools in The United States have students from all over the world, not only Americans, people of different race, characteristics, and cultural backgrounds, no one should be judged by the way they dress any differently than others, and everyone would look as one. This way, uniforms helps eliminate discrimination. “While school uniforms are typically found in private schools, it may have only been in 1987 that the first public school--Cherry Hill Elementary in Baltimore, MD--instituted a school uniform policy. Then, in 1994, the Long Beach Unified School District in California adopted a mandatory uniform policy in some of its schools, making it the first urban district to do so. The adoption of school uniforms for all 200,000 students by the Philadelphia Board of Education in May, 2000 was another landmark. Though public school uniform use is not widespread, it is growing.” (Public School Uniform Statistics, 2012, pp. 2). In the 1980s, public schools were often compared unfavorably to Catholic schools. Noting the perceived benefit that uniforms conferred upon Catholic schools, some public schools decided to adopt a school uniform policy. President Clinton provided momentum to the school uniform movement when he said in his 1996 State of the Union speech, "If it means teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear school uniforms."(Wilde, 2012, pp.4). The cost of uniforms is a concern for some families, but it has been shown that families in which the children wear uniforms spend almost 80 dollars less on clothing for their children for the school year compared to those who do not have children who wear uniforms. Also, 44 percent of the families in which the children wear uniforms believe that it keeps the children more focused on school.
According to proponents, school uniforms have pros that include decreased violence in schools and increased discipline of the students. Violence decreases because students are less likely to be picked on for their clothing, as there can be no focus on brand names. Along with this, students who are from poorer families are less likely to feel jealous or ashamed that they do not have the same clothing as those who are from wealthier families. Also, as the children wear the same things, it is difficult, if not impossible, for them to wear gang colors or other types of gang-related items. Discipline among the students increases because any tensions related to fashion or gangs have been lessened and students are more likely to be focused on the learning process. (Tanner L. 2011, December 19, pp. 7).
On the other hand, some people believe that not schools should require the students to wear uniforms. These people believe that uniforms are itchy and uncomfortable. They also say that wearing a uniform stifles creativity. However, not all uniforms are uncomfortable, as some uniforms can be as simple as polo and khakis. Also, students can express their creativity through other means.
In the debate against uniforms, there are several points that are often mentioned. To begin with, uniforms may not necessarily stop bullying or other violence. Though the same clothes can help to equalize appearance, this will not stop some students from finding other reasons for singling out people. Also, forcing students to wear uniforms can stifle personal expression and creativity. This expression is part of personal growth and it is very important for children to be able to express themselves and become an individual. Additionally, some students may be resentful for being forced to wear uniforms, causing them to act out. In such a case, uniforms have contributed to an unruly learning environment rather than helping to prevent one.
Now that we have heard the arguments on both sides, what do moms really think about this debate? McDermott, M. in his article “The Pros and Cons of School Uniforms”, interviewed three moms on opposite sides of the debate. Here's what they said:
Toinette Campbell, mom of two boys from Burbank, California: "Uniforms? I love them. The key word being uniform. It gives kids a level playing field and gets them away from one-upmanship on designer labels. It also gets kids used to taking care of their clothes. Getting rid of status symbols prevents children from being teased because they aren't wearing $150 jeans."
Carol O'Neil, mother of two boys from East Kilbride, Scotland: " I am totally for school uniforms as they keep children dressed the same and stop all of the nonsense with kids wearing designer gear. If kids are dressed the same, then they are less likely to be bullied." (In the UK, uniforms are compulsory in both state and private schools.)
Eduarda Schroeder, mom of two daughters from Chandler, Arizona: "Uniforms can be a financial burden for poor families because they are an additional expense for parents who pay taxes for a free public education. I am more in favor of a dress code." (2009).
Although more public schools are currently enforcing a dress code as opposed to school uniforms, it seems that a number of schools are switching policies because they are more satisfied with uniforms. The Nation Center of Educational Statistics (NCES) reported that “55% of public schools in the U.S. implemented dress code policies for their students in the 2007-2008 school year.”(Admin, 2011, pp.2). Dress codes limit some clothes that students can or cannot wear to school. Such policies typically ban clothes with vulgar and inappropriate language, expressions, or pictures and also don’t allow clothing that insinuates sexual or inappropriate messages or meanings. Overly revealing clothing, including super short, shorts and skirts, and certain styles of tops, such as over-the-shoulder styles, may also be considered contraband. These types of dress code policies help ensure that students wear appropriate styled clothes, but students still face peer-pressure to wear what’s in style and are still bullied if they’re not.
The number of public schools adopting uniform policies is increasing, with high hopes of creating more positive and conducive learning environments. Schools are eager to decrease negative behaviors among students and violent incidents like bullying while simultaneously increasing academic achievement and ensure safe learning environments. By following these guidelines and continuously researching the advantages of a school uniform policy, the concept of school uniforms will help with the safety in schools, will decrease the disciplinary issues facing schools, will help to promote a positive school climate, and will place the focus of schools back on professionalism and excellence in education.

Uniforms in All K-12 Schools

...choice. Teenagers today are faced with choices about what to do, what to say, how to act, and what to wear. Peer pressure can begin when the “in” crowd decides whether they will accept you or not. In today’s public schools, acceptance might just depend on what fashions you wear. Expensive clothing trends decide who’s who – who’s on top and who’s on the bottom. A teen’s social status will affect his decision making in all of the other, tougher areas of adolescent pressure. Some of the pressure on today’s students to compete with their peers can be easily relieved if school uniforms were a requirement in public K-12 classrooms. The drive to fit in and be accepted by the crowd is arguably one of the most important things on a student’s mind when they enter the school each morning, distracting from the learning that should be their main focus. “As teens move into adulthood, they begin to ask some of the following questions: Am I normal? Do I fit in? What should I look like? What should I do? More often than not, they turn to their friends and classmates for answers. If they get mixed up with a bad crowd, teens usually end up making mistakes.” (Fanning, 2003). Students who can afford today’s fashions are quite often perceived by their peers as leaders. These leaders often get to dictate who is accepted and who is not. If teens cannot get accepted by the fashions they wear, they may attempt to get noticed and move up in the social...

Implementing School Uniforms

...Implementing School Uniform Policy in Public Schools Jennifer Phillips Sullivan University Abstract School uniform policies have become an important debate among public schools in the United States. The school district in Long Beach, California was the one of the first public schools to adopt a mandated uniform policy. The success that this school had, along with other schools that followed this path, does not seem to be enough evidence to convince other school leaders that school uniforms has a great impact on the students in behavior and academic success. Arguments among school leaders, parents, and students range from not enough statistical research to prove that the uniforms better the student’s safety and education, to the expense of uniforms compared to every day clothes. The evidence that the public schools have that participate in school uniforms seems to outweigh the petty arguments of a few critics. Keywords: school uniforms, safety, students, faculty, education Implementing School Uniform Policy in Public Schools School uniform policy is an ongoing debate spreading across our country. According to Schatcher (2005), “by the end of 2002 twenty-three percent of all elementary schools had adopted uniforms, and several middle and high schools had followed the pattern” (p.46). Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton were both supporters of mandating uniform policies in the public schools. Clinton endorsed the policy through his State of Union address:...

...Uniforms. They are everywhere. Compulsory for many employees of companies, doctors, soldiers, private schools, they accompany us almost through all our life. And now even students in many public schools are obliged to wear them. For decades students, schools, and parents have budded heads over the issue of a student's attire at school. But do we really need them especially at this tender age. Will they make us more capable, more strict and studious? Students should be given the liberty to wear their choice of attire to school for these reasons: Interference of self-expression, family finances, uniforms are harmful to the transition to adulthood, and they only act as a 'band-aid' towards bulling, gang activities, and cliques. School uniforms in public schools also conflict with a student's freedom of speech as well as their freedom of self expression. Starting from the time we were able to pick out our own clothing, people have been known to express their forming identities as well as how they are feeling. School uniforms demonstrate interference with ones self-expression and sense of creativity. Just by wearing them it discourages students by not allowing their true personality to shine through. In some cases it also offends certain religions or beliefs. According to www.bbc.co.uk (Survey Finds Support for Veil Ban) a study shows that 53% of Britons would support a ban on Muslim women wearing veils in school. Creating a school community based on homogeneity stifles creativity...

Why Kids Should Not Be Required To Wear Uniforms

...School boards all over the world require kids to wear uniforms. All private schools and almost all public schools require some form of uniform but don’t ever ask for student’s opinions. Students should not be required to wear uniforms because uniforms can get very expensive, they hinder kids from showing there individuality, and you do not need a uniform to be modest. First off uniforms are required, but they are not supplied, you must buy your own. That becomes very expensive because, yes you can find khaki pants many places, however you can’t buy a uniform shirt that some schools require from your local Wal-Mart, or discount store. Some families are struggling just to send their kids to the school itself and also to put dinner on their plates...

Should Uniforms Be Mandatory

...School Uniform School uniforms would produce a safe and structured learning environment for students. Which is the first requirement of a good school. Students that feel safe in their environment are more apt to learn and not worry about their appearance. School uniforms in public schools are becoming increasingly popular across the nation. The public school system would benefit greatly if this policy were to be enforced. Resistance is always a problem when trying to make changes. Taking all things into account, the positive effects would be far greater than the negative effects. School uniforms should be mandatory in public schools because their use would lead to higher education, less violence, and lower cost to parents. By requiring school uniforms in public schools, education will be improved and a dress code can enforce discipline towards learning. Uniforms improve a person’s outlook toward success as students generally act the way they are dressed. With fewer distractions, students see the school as a workplace for teaching and learning. Students also have less stress in their lives because they are not in a fashion show or competition. Dress codes also lead to a change in grades and part of the change is because it would be easier for students to focus on their academics when everyone is dressed the same. School uniforms would also decrease violence in public schools. There would be less peer pressure toward trying to fit in with the in-crowd and distractions...

The Effects of Public School Uniform Policies

...Effects of Public School Uniform Policies Taresha Y. Hemphill ECPI University Abstract Public school uniform Policies are not a solution to all school problems. Some problems will still exist. However, the improvements that the mandatory uniform policies have made across the nation are indisputable. Public school uniform policies will continue to reduce school violence and gang activity and overall help create a productive and safer learning environment. It will take more work to correct the school systems, but they will only get worse if something is not done about them. Even though school uniforms are a small step to improving the violence in public schools in the United States, it is better to make that small step than do nothing at all. There are vast opinions over what students should wear to school. Some see a student’s style of dress as an expression of who they are and dress code policies as a First Amendment Rights issue. Others see a student’s style of dress as a safety issue. School Dress Codes and Uniform policies have been challenged in PTA meetings, the classroom and in the court room. The main reason for having these policies is to create a safer, more productive learning environment for our children; not to strip away their freedom. We should allow students to express themselves and their individuality. However, this does not mean that their expression should be so grand...

Are School Uniforms a Good Idea?

...Are School Uniforms a good idea? Many public schools in America are making students wear school uniforms. Uniforms were first instituted in 16th century England at the charity schools for the poor children. It was not until the 19th century that the great English public schools began instituting uniforms and even later for them to be widely accepted at state schools, especially elementary schools. ...cons about implying school uniforms. I want everyone to know that there are two ways to view if school uniforms should be implied to every public school. There are two sides to the story, but when it comes to picking one over the other, it's your decision to make. I will explain every detail about why schools should or should not have uniforms. In this case. I am having difficulty choosing a side because I agree with both, but everyone has a different perspective. The issue of use of uniforms in public schools has produced a lot of discussion in the recent years. A high number of key stakeholders in the educational sector think that uniforms may reduce negative conduct that is connected to student dress such as school violence, absenteeism, teasing and gang related activities. The main argument that opponents are advancing is that uniforms get in the way of students right to choose dress, violating their right to speech. School Uniforms Should Be Mandatory

...School Uniforms Should be Mandatory Michele Rasmussen College Author Note This research is being submitted on March 4, 2015, for Rebecca Moore’s English G124 English Composition course. Students enrolled in public schools should be required to wear uniforms. For many years students have not liked wearing uniforms however, uniforms help create a disciplined atmosphere and therefore it should be implemented in schools that currently do not require uniforms. According to Happel, the addition of uniform to the regulations of public schools is viewed as a method for improving the overall school environment and student achievement (Happel, 2012). School districts should require students to wear uniforms because it will diminish the chance of humiliation, certain clothes can be distracting, and it teaches discipline and conformity. Wearing uniforms is a practical way to weaken the chance of humiliation in a school environment. According to Han, implementing a uniform policy contributes to improving students sense of belonging and developing student pride in their school (Han, 2010). ...School Uniforms: The Pros and Cons in schools (Final Paper) ChaMyra Lewis-Jackson ENG 122 English Composition II Mr. Brandon Bond December 23, 2014 School Uniforms: The Pros and Cons in schools In our country many concerns and issues about safety in our schools have caused a big disturbance which have led school districts to require uniforms for their students. Long ago, some parents seem against or incapable of singling out the "clothes" line with their children, to the point where the new trending styles took a toll and started influencing the kids' attire decisions in a big way. The safety of the students and environment which was surrounded by gang violence and other concerning distractions became an important matter for a lot of individuals within the school districts. School uniforms and dress codes can play a significant role in the drastic change with student in a learning environment (Boutelle, 2008). That’s why school uniforms should be implemented as a policy for students in different districts, because many reports have shown after enforcing this policy students showed a dramatic improvement in their academics, attendance and behavior. Most advocates imply that if all students are required to wear uniforms would give the students an opportunity to find a sense of unity and equality with one another which will help with the confidence of some that didn’t feel like they belonged. I think there is so much debate over it because it does have an effect on how a person feels at school and maybe by limiting self-expression it could change how a person develops in their life. If it is a mandatory rule and a student is uncomfortable or feels strongly against it could actually cause more problems and may have a lasting impact on how a person responds to authority in the future.
