Siddal's Corruption

Submitted By

Christina Rossetti wrote “In an Artist’s Studio” in 1856 during the Victorian Era where faith was questioned, and peace and prosperity was one of the many goals aimed in that Era. Gabriel Rossetti, the painter and brother of Christina Rossetti and Elizabeth Siddal, the artist’s model plays a role in this poem. Christina Rossetti argues that Gabriel Rossetti is objectifying female models for his artwork, and therefore, Christina Rossetti speaks against her brother by portraying the contradiction in this poem. She uses loyal, uplifting, and church-related phrases in order to suggest the corruption in this act, and creates a contradicting lovely scenery that Siddal is painted in, which suggests the dehumanization of her and women as a whole. …show more content…
As a model, Siddal is forced to be in different positions - “A saint, an angel” in order to fulfill ‘his dream.’ Throughout history, women were labeled in different phrases such as unimportant and expendable, but in this situation, Siddal is labeled as “a saint” which relates to a church, suggesting that she is pure and innocent. Adding on, Siddal is also labeled as “a[n] angel” signifying that she is peace and beauty, a painting that symbolizes innocence. Although it may seem positive, being labeled as “an angel” or “a saint” means that the women do not have the power to voice her own opinion and is perfect- therefore suggests that women are weaker than men. In the first eight lines, words such as “opal” and “ruby” which suggests love and warmth, and uses the phrase “the mirror gave back all her loveliness” in order to suggest that her reflection is beautiful. By using these loyal and uplifting phrases, Christina Rossetti criticizes that the woman are viewed as objects and are less significant than men. In the last four lines, the rhyming seems to be off than before - “light,” “dim,” “bright,” and “dream.” Since this poem follows the Petrarchan Sonnet structure, it generally rhymes every other line at the last four lines. Here, “light” and “bright” seems certain than “dim” and “dream,” therefore maybe suggesting that there is dissatisfaction in his “dream.” The word choice Christina Rossetti uses in the Petrarchan sonnet influences the mood and ultimately juxtaposes the contradiction of women viewed as an

Corruption in Healthcare Services in India

...Health care services in India are facing different challenges from inadequate finance and poor management to inequity in terms of quality and access (Ramani-Mavalankar, 2006). However, corruption is that underlying problem, which if not tackled, would prevent from resolving all other kinds of difficulties (Potter, 2003). Therefore, in this essay I have endeavoured to understand the forms in which corruption is prevalent in Indian Healthcare Services. Along with this, I have also tried to suggest certain measures which would help tackle corruption. The former president of Medical Council of India, Mr.Ketan Desai has been charged with corruption both the times he has been elected for the post. Despite his removal in 2001 following the charges, he was re-elected by the Government of India in 2009 (Pandya 2009). Thereafter in 2011 Mr Desai was arrested by the CBI for accepting a highly culpable amount of bribe from two medical colleges seeking recognition. (Chauhan, 2011). Mr Desai justifies the definition of corruption by Transparency International, as the result of misused powers to benefit personally instead of doing public welfare (Vian, 2007). Moreover, this definition would be appropriate for the Government of India who elected a person with history of fraud to be the president of the central health governing body of the nation. Health sector, in any nation, is a vast network involving different participants at each stage ( Hussmann,2011). Therefore it becomes difficult...

...The 2 Sides of Power Sam Pinsky Patrick Halpenny Wednesday November 13th, 2013 ENG4U Power is a very vague terminology. Power is like a disease, very epidemics. Power can be a success or a failure, depending on the individual. Power in the right hands creates justice. Power in the wrong hands creates injustices. It corrupts human feelings and converts friends into enemies, therefore having power in the wrong hands succeeds in persuading one, using the power in a cruel and oppressive way. In the novel "Kindred", written by Octavia Butler, the novel presents revolving themes like power corruption of emotion, friendship and racism. Most of the times possessing the power can destroy the freedom of others. Power corrupts human feelings. Whenever an individual achieves the power, one becomes a different person. Rufus, the main character in the novel, possessed the power after his father's death. He became very possessive, even to Dana. The first time when Rufus met Dana he had a good reputation and liked her very much. Later on as he became mature and powerful his friendship to Dana changed to possessive love. He became very jealous of Kevin and was eager to kill him. Whenever Dana asked if he had received a response from Kevin, he would deny it. That did not last long, she soon found out that Rufus betrayed her. ->quote This shows that power can corrupt human emotions entirely. Power can turn allies into enemies. Friendship can last...

Examples Of Power In Animal Farm By George Orwell

... “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely”(Lord Acton,1887) Power is something only the right person should have, it could turn into an absolute mess if it's not handled correctly. Having power means others look up to you, and you could change the way they see things. This effect a person has on someone could cause dangerous events. It can also cause something really good. Meaning the outcome of having power could be either positive or negative. A person could easily abuse power and think that people won’t retaliate. The book “Animal Farm” by George Orwell is a great example of how power can be abused. Mr.Jones, the owner of Manor Farm is an alcoholic who doesn’t treat his animals right. He sees it as he can do whatever he wants and nothing will happen. The animals decide take the power into their own hands. They are sick and tired of Mr.Jones treating them unfairly so they decide to start a revolution. In the book Mr.Jones comes back to the farm to try and take it back. The animals don't let him, they are in power now because Mr.Jones was abusing his. This shows how Mr.Jones using his power to hurt the animals turns into a negative thing. Once Mr.Jones loses his power and it turns over to Snowball. Snowball is a pig who decides to use his power to make the environment of the farm better for the animals. He sees this revolution as an opportunity to make things right. He starts getting the animals to be able to provide for themselves...

Another reason is that this pork barrel system can easily be used for corruption, in the means of allocating millions of pesos for a road or building projects but instead of using competent materials they used sub-standards ones so that they can filch some of the money allocated for the project. Another reasons is the congress can manipulated the money and make it disappear little by little until its gone, then they will make some report that they used it to make road projects, medical projects and other projects. Pork barrel is a system that allows persons in position to be corrupt. Relationship Between Power & Corruption Lotf

...How Are Power and Corruption Related? by Sebastian Sandoval "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." – Lord John Dalberg-Acton Macbeth and Lord of the Flies depict power and corruption. However in Macbeth's case it is his fear of being forgotten that leads to his ambitions for power and in turn corrupts him. In Lord of the Flies we see Jack's ambition to become chief corrupt him into doing whatever it takes to achieve that position. Both works seem to coincide with Hobbes theory that "man is naturally savage" and that savagery combined with the notion of power can only lead to one thing, corruption. In this essay the relationship between power and corruption will be explored through the lens of three texts: Macbeth by William Shakespeare (1623), Lord of the Flies by William Golding (1954), and Of Man, Being the First Part of Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes (1651). Let us begin with The Tragedy of Macbeth. Throughout the play, we see Macbeth change from a noble and brave soldier into a shadow of his former self. In the beginning we see an internal struggle with the decision to kill King Duncan. This is most clearly depicted in act I when Macbeth says, "We will proceed no further in this business. He hath honored me of late,"(1.7. 28-30 ). It is after the murder of Duncan that we begin to notice a sinister change. Macbeth begins to murder anyone who has or could get in his way even his friend Banquo. In act 3 Macbeth's plan is first revealed in his conversation...

...Police corruption has become a very difficult and touchy topic to handle. Not only is it detrimental to the department, but it is something we can’t have in our community. Unfortunately it has become more and more common amongst the police departments in the United States. It has led to very bad cases such as crash in California and even the New Jersey state police lords of discipline. Police corruption can be easily solved, and it is very important to have programs like Internal Affairs to keep the officers in line.    A lot of people feel that with the structure of our system and so many loopholes everywhere else that it may be easy for a cop to be corrupt. The biggest reason that police corruption occurs is because the officers abuse their given authority because they feel they have the power to do what they want when they want. Another reason police corruption happens is because they hit a bust on drugs and a cop likes the drugs so they take a little bit and don’t tell anyone. This not only is wrong for an officer, but for anyone to do and it gives the criminal less of a charge because they weren’t sentenced with as much stuff as they really had when busted.   Police corruption falls into two different categories internal corruption and external corruption. Internal meaning it involves the people that work within the department, and external involves police contacts within the public. There are 3 things that must happen at the same time for a cop to be considered being...

Hi to the Waves

...conclusion is that even though Socrates uses horses as an example he manages to apply his example to all beings and prove his case that he is innocent of the charges. The second example that Socrates makes is that people that don't care about the youth are the ones who are really corrupting them. "It is quite clear that by now, gentlemen, that Meletus, as I said before, has never paid the slightest attention to this subjects. However I invite you to tell us, Meletus, in what sense you make out that I corrupt the minds of the young." 3 The premises of this quote are:1. Meletus has no concern for the youth.2. Meletus who shows no concern for the youth cannot charge another person of corrupting the youth 3. Since Meletus, charges Socrates with corruption of the youth, though he cannot charge him. The conclusion from these premises is that Meletus is contradicting himself, and Socrates is innocent. The last point that Socrates makes to prove that he is not guilty is he says that even if he was corrupting the youth he was doing it unwillingly. "Either I have not a bad influence, or it is unintentional; so in either case what you claim is false." 4 The premises for this argument are: 1. Socrates either corrupts the youth intentionally or unintentionally. 2. It is possible for someone to corrupt the youth unintentionally, then he is not guilty. 3. Since Socrates was corrupting the youth unintentionally he is not guilty of the charges and should not be punished. So when you take all the conclusions...

Orson Welles Citizen Kane explores this complexity through its portrayal of media tycoon Charles Kane, highlighting the centrality of ambition and corruption in an individual’s pursuit of power and relationships. Wells employs avant grande cinematography to engage and persuade the audience of the instability of the human experience. Citizen Kane demonstrates how despite the individuals desire for relationships; their ability to forge connections can be undermined by their personal perceptions and ideals. Kane’s moral vacuity and ambitious nature is central to his inability to sustain meaningful relationships. Nonetheless, Kane’s superficial pursuit of transient pleasures and ambition results in the corruption of his relationships. Generation of Idiots

...“The Negative Effects of the Internet” is and interesting article written by Ryan Subong that talks about the positive and negatives effects of the internet. The internet has changed humanity no doubt about it. Some people might use it to learn new things that will positively further their knowledge, while others choose to commit frowned upon acts, and corrupt themselves. Pornographic material easily accessible to any curious child or teen with internet access can lead them down the path of corruption. Pornographic material and similar explicit content available on the internet tend to degrade humanity. Almost any song or movie you can think of can easily be pirated from the internet, making protecting copyright almost impossible. Albert Einstein once said “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots”, this quote is so precise, and it scares me. The internet is a great place for one to learn how to write an essay, but also the perfect place for someone to plagiarize someone else’s. Plagiarism and pirating copyrighted material cause very negative outcomes, this could ruin one’s reputation, or even worst, get them locked up in federal prison with 500,000 dollars bail (Pirating). Hills Like White Elephants

...Eddie Langston ENG 125 Introduction to Literature Instructor: Demeterius Meyers Assignment 1 10/04/2013 Why I hate literature. Well the other day I was busy exploring the depths of literature, appreciating it's glory and ability to spread around thoughts and ideas. But out of nowhere, I stumbled upon a most disturbing piece of information. Apparently, there are places where you can go and read books. That's right. Some depraved lunatics had the idea to go and create buildings where anybody can check out books, read them, and then return them. Only for the cycle to refresh itself. And the worst thing, it's absolutely free. That's right, whoever wants to can just waltz in there and borrow any book they like. It's ridiculous! Now, some of you might be wondering, " Man why are you so against the library? It's a good place...isn't it?" And I can proudly and correctly respond to you ignorant buffoon,"NOT AT ALL!" The library's primary function is and has always been to check out books. Books, and a lot of them literature. Now, some of these books are alright. But the majority of them are so dangerous, that every single book should be banned altogether. Books, especially literature, are filled with dangerous ideas. They are filled with radical thoughts that corrupt our innocent youth, experimental adults, and senile elderly. If it's non-fiction and stated to be true, with various credible sources, people can take the facts and reject them outright. It may surprise you, but...
