Dear Mr. Brian,
After review of the sales and catalog data, we found important trends that may help identify characteristics of our most favorable target market. Given the volume of the data, we decided to focus on the amount spent as our primary dependent variable, and selective independent variables.
We first analyzed the qualitative data by performing chi-tests between each of the variables gender, own home, married, location, and previous customer. Out of these relationships, it appeared that there were definite correlations between such relationships as Gender & Own Home, Gender & Married Status, Own Home & Married status, and Previous Customer & Married Status. For instance, it is not completely random that our male customers, on average, are 23% more married and own 15% more homes than our female customers. Also, our married customers own 84% more homes than single customers, and on average our married customers make up 12.5% more of our previous customer base.
This data is important because it identified the relevant qualitative variables to match to quantitative variables. First of all, we decided that our important dependent variable is the amount spent from our customers in the last fiscal year as this is ultimately what our goal should be. Secondly, that men are our primary target audience. We first begin by establishing the fact that men, on average, spend $388 more on our products than women do.
We then ran linear regressions between the quantitative variables: age, salary, children, and catalogs sent. The average age Salary appears to have the strongest correlation with Amount spent out of all of the independent variables. From here we saw that men on average earn $16,005 (33% higher salary) more than our female customers. In addition, men have fewer children and received more catalogs, all factors that increase average spending.
The one area we may want to focus on is converting more men in our target into previous customers. This is the one category that had fewer men. 70% of our sales came from previous customers, yet less than half were male. We should look into customer retention strategies and increasing male participation since they produce more sales on average.

Amy: a Short Lived Story

...Phoenix. No job prospects and no place to live except in my car. I had been on the brink of despair before, but now I had reached the end of my rope. No money and no hope, I contemplated committing suicide but fate intervened. While having a cup of coffee in a mom and pop restaurant in downtown Scottsdale, I came across an ad in the Arizona Republic for a live-in aide for a female adult who has Multiple Sclerosis. I answered the ad immediately. Amy sounded nice on the phone even though I could barely understand her. When we met, we connected with each other immediately. The lady who was living with Amy was lazy and rude to Amy and I felt immediate resentment toward her. Maddie was ignorant and hostile and we disliked each other at first sight. Amy wanted Maddie gone now, but he said Maddie could stay until he found a new live-in aide. Amy and I talked for hours and I knew we clicked. Soon Maddie was gone and I was Amy's aide. We were both in our mid-thirties and had rough childhoods. For the first few weeks we got along impressively. Then strange things began to happen. At first I dismissed these strange occurrences to my own lack of memory. Amy could not have done them since she was unable to move from her wheelchair. Amy began to sit alone in the dark in her wheelchair and say words about the devil and demons that troubled me more and more as I found Amy getting more hostile towards me. When I asked her what was the matter she gave me a look that burned my eyes. I found my clothes...

...himself. And such a weight. Once he was in your studio he never knew when to go, but would sit on and on until you nearly screamed, and burned to throw something enormous after him when he did finally blush his way out–something like the tortoise stove. The strange thing was that at first sight he looked most interesting. Everybody agreed about that. You would drift into the café one evening and there you would see, sitting in a corner, with a glass of coffee in front of him, a thin dark boy, wearing a blue jersey with a little grey flannel jacket buttoned over it. And somehow that blue jersey and the grey jacket with the sleeves that were too short gave him the air of a boy that has made up his mind to run away to sea. Who has run away, in fact, and will get up in a moment and sling a knotted handkerchief containing his nightshirt and his mother's picture on the end of a stick, and walk out into the night and be drowned. . . . Stumble over the wharf edge on his way to the ship, even. . . . He had black close-cropped hair, grey eyes with long [Page 219] lashes, white cheeks and a mouth pouting as though he were determined not to cry. . . . How could one resist him? Oh, one's heart was wrung at sight. And, as if that were not enough, there was his trick of blushing. . . . Belle in Oh Little Town

...the moment she steps outside her door. The birds are chirping and everything looks alright with the world, and yet all she can do is find fault with the village that she is walking toward. Why didn’t she stay at home if the people and the town bore her so much? The color and style of her dress is no accident. The shade of blue is soothing and gives the appearance of innocence. The style says ‘poor but not trashy’. Everything about this character is carefully crafted to get the audience to relate to her in some way. We are constantly reminded in song that this girl is pretty. She is pretty, but the three blondes are prettier, in my opinion. But we are given a hint that they are stupid. Her contempt for the villagers is hidden in plain sight from them and from the audience. Belle makes her way to the book shop hitching a ride on the back of someone’s wagon. It wasn’t far, but she didn’t ask for permission. Once she arrives at the book shop she returns a book she borrowed. Apparently no one shops in this particular...

...give you a few reasons of why we should and shouldn’t believe in the senses we are so used to... My first reason would have to be our sense of sight. Sight is: This technically is two senses given the two distinct types of receptors present, one for color (cones) and one for brightness (rods). Our sight is very important, it allows us to see what’s in front of us, say if a car is coming and we are walking then we can move out of the way. Or vision allows us to see what’s beautiful, it allows us to see how one’s life has changed. For those who have kids, your vision allows you to see your child from birth to the day he/she walks down that aisle to start his/her life. Although sight may seem all positive there are some negative drawbacks. Sometimes just because you see something doesn’t mean it’s true. You may see you two people fighting for example and just used to violence, but maybe there just playing. You may need your other senses to distinguish what’s really there. The ability to hear the sounds around us is an important quality-of-life. It can help us distinguish two people fighting to just playing. So what is the meaning of sound? It is detecting vibrations along some medium, such as air or water that is in contact with your ear drums. It helps you hear that person yelling for help, or just laughing. Our hearing reacts to a sound vibration at a frequency as high as 20,000 cycles per second (our book) compared to whales at 100,000 and frogs at 5,000. Our ability to hear...

...nothing better than taking in all the wonderful sights and sounds of my neighborhood. Our front porch is an awesome place to sit back and relax while you enjoy the wonderful smelling flowers during spring, the warm breeze of a summer night or listening to the crunch of the leaves during the fall. Our front porch is the gathering place for my family to come and relax, whether it is with a soothing drink, a Stephen King book, to take a break from life’s obstacles or to watch my son play carefree. No matter the season, or the reason, our front porch offers comfort, relaxation and memories to all who visit. One spring, several years ago, we had purchased new porch furniture and could not wait to get home with it and try it out. Later that day, my husband and I began to sit down in the enormous fluffy tan cushions on the swing; we both turned around at the same time and looked at each with our heads laid back and started laughing hysterically. We could not believe the difference it made by just some new furniture. We sat there for a while taking in all the surroundings, from the bright red cardinals flying back and forth carrying on conversations, to the distant sound and smell of someone that was cutting their grass for the first time that season. The first summer we were able to enjoy our little piece of heaven was 2011. Our son was 15 months old and so full of life. We loved watching Lucas play and explore all the sights and sounds for the first time in his little life. When...

Personal Narrative: The Horror Home

...What could be in a graveyard? As it turns out, everything. There was the sound of a church bell, and zombies came out and about everywhere. Bats were flying overhead, and I could feel the gust of wind they created, the noise of wings beating. I heard a medley of odd noises. I thought they were the false cries of others, but as it turns out, a medley of noises equated to a medley of really odd gross things. Apart from the zombies and bats, there where ghouls, vampires, weird green things that looked like blobs, and off in the distance, what appeared to be a manticore. At this point, I was beyond screaming and crying and closing my eyes, I was wondering what was wrong with my...

The Importance of Music

...wedding reception, is obviously going to change the mood and the view of the supposed-to-be quiet, and peaceful ceremony. The emotions stirred up by music, influences people to tune in to songs relating to their temporary state of mind, such as sorrow, joy, anger, sadness, etc.. For instance, it is obviously a commonality for one to listen to slow or sad songs at times of remembering death, as these songs tend to probe into the soul and bring about - through some form of conceptualization, the thoughts and feelings associated with the death of a friend or loved one. Most don't seem to find themselves listening to Boogie Wonderland by Earth Wind and Fire as tears of sadness stream down their faces – though it would certainly be a pretty amusing sight to see. The almost synergistic mutual pull between humans and music is impossible to deny upon observation of its impact on oneself. It is clear that music holds the potential to transform or define experience, but maybe not so clear as to why people enjoy it so much. For some, music is a trip down the rabbit hole of the unknown and infinite which lies unseen in ordinary reality. For others, music may seem to hold little potential or impact. Either way however, both perspectives of music at the ends of the perceptual spectrum of interpretation, accept music as having some effect, for they would not otherwise identify it as music, if it wasn't recognized as such. It is the vibrations of music...

...single radio. Sounds and noises coming from twelve different radios that often change channels and volume would lead the average person to think that they are standing in the audio section of an electronics store. It turns out that twelve radios can actually make music, at least according to John Cage: “When I wrote the Imaginary Landscape for twelve radios, it was not meant for the purpose of shock or as a joke…” Unfortunately, some people do take it as a joke. However, it is likely because they do not fully understand Cage’s composition style. John Cage’s composition style, especially with this piece, is unique to say the least. His different approach to composing, especially after 1950, sets him apart from most composers. So where exactly does he fit? Charles Hamm ultimately describes Cage’s compositions following 1950, including Imaginary Landscape No. 4, as “postmodern,” even though Cage himself did not use this word to describe his works. Early in his career, Cage occasionally used the term “modern music” when referring to works composed in the first half of the twentieth century. However, as Hamm points out, Cage began...
