In the literary work, Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, a pair of characters who are extremely similar are introduced. Charles Darnay and his foil, Sydney Carton. I will explain how the two are individually, how one highlights a trait of another and how their relationship illuminates the work as a whole. Charles Darnay was born into a corrupt noble family, that he chose to renounce in his adulthood. As the revolution hunted down the Marquis of Evremonde, Darnay’s family name, the current Marquis died, making Charles the new Marquis by succession. Darnay is saved from wrongful accusations in court multiple times by Carton, an alcoholic lawyer with a severely low self esteem. Carton is referred to as a ‘Jackal’ when his business relationship
