Similarities Between Good And Evil In To Kill A Mockingbird

Despite those who exercise evil, goodness will always overcome, even if buried deep within. In the story, To Kill a Mockingbird, two characters who seem similar actually are very distinguishable from each other. These characters help the further development of the two primary characters, Scout and Jem. Through these experiences, Scout and Jem develop skills that allow them to better understand people as a whole. These social skills allow Scout and Jem to perceive why specific people are the way they are and allow them to have a better comprehension of the situation as a whole. Through the continuous battle of good and evil, evil can provide a shell on a person who may be truly good, or succumb someone fully to its immoral ways.

Ewell seeks vengeance on those responsible for making him look like a fool, therefore characterizing him as someone who is unable to forgive and forget, and obtains qualities of evil. Mr. Bob Ewell is very persistent in his hunt for vengeance due to Atticus humiliating him. One instance is shown when: “Mr. Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat in his face, and told him he’d get him if it took the rest of his life.” (Lee, 240). Bob Ewell emphasizes he would get Atticus if it took the rest of his life, and therefore enforcing the fact that Mr. Ewell is not a man to forgive and forget. Although he was victorious in court, he was still made a fool nonetheless. He threatens Atticus to “get him”, which translates to jumping and inflicting harm upon him. This also enforces that Bob Ewell cannot see the error of his ways and only holds evil within his heart. However, when Bob Ewell decided to act on his threats, he did not attack Atticus, but his kids: “We were nearly to the road when I felt Jem’s hand leave me, felt him jerk backwards to the ground. More scuffling, and then a dull crunching sound and Jem screamed,” (Lee, 351). When Bob Ewell finally acts on his continuous threats, he decides not to attack Atticus directly, but those he holds dear. Therefore, Bob Ewell has decided to attack his kids. Bob Ewell figured that Atticus would be more than hurt if his kids had been mortally wounded or dead.
