Understanding Nrega: a Simple Theory and Some Facts

...CDE January 2011 UNDERSTANDING NREGA: A SIMPLE THEORY AND SOME FACTS Diganta Mukherjee Email: digantam@hotmail.com Unitedworld School of Business Kolkata Uday Bhanu Sinha Email: uday@econdse.org Delhi School of Economics University of Delhi Working Paper No. 196 Centre for Development Economics Department of Economics, Delhi School of Economics Understanding NREGA: A Simple Theory and Some Facts * Diganta Mukherjee # and Uday Bhanu Sinha Abstract A developing economy like India is often characterised by a labour market with demand and supply of labour and a wage that even if competitively determined may not be adequate for the poor household to reach their target income; what they consider as means of a decent living. Envisaging situations like these, the Indian government has implemented the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) in recent past, to complement the income of the poor by providing them employment for certain number of labour days in a year. In this paper, using a simple theoretical model, we have analysed the impact of NREGA scheme on (i) rural labour market, (ii) income of the poor households and (iii) overall agricultural production. It is seen that the income from NREGA alone can be a substantial part of the target income of the poor. We show that in such a situation, the poor may exhibit a backward bending supply curve of labour which may lead to an aggregate reduction in agricultural output. This adverse production effect...

...schema consists of fact tables and dimension tables. Fact tables contain the quantitative or factual data about a business--the information being queried. This information is often numerical, additive measurements and can consist of many columns and millions or billions of rows. Dimension tables are usually smaller and hold descriptive data that reflects the dimensions, or attributes, of a business. SQL queries then use joins between fact and dimension tables and constraints on the data to return selected information. Fact and dimension tables differ from each other only in their use within a schema. Their physical structure and the SQL syntax used to create the tables are the same. In a complex schema, a given table can act as a fact table under some conditions and as a dimension table under others. The way in which a table is referred to in a query determines whether a table behaves as a fact table or a dimension table. Even though they are physically the same type of table, it is important to understand the difference between fact and dimension tables from a logical point of view. To demonstrate the difference between fact and dimension tables, consider how an analyst looks at business performance: * A salesperson analyzes revenue by customer, product, market, and time period. * A financial analyst tracks actuals and budgets by line item, product, and time period. * A marketing person reviews shipments by product, market, and time period. The facts--what is......

Written Report

...There may be a very slight grey area as to whether Steel intended to Pimply emotional distress, but his actions where both intentional and reckless and I believe intend can be inferred from the entirety of the facts surrounding the incident. Negligence may be a tougher area to clearly address. The actions of Steve Steel and the fact that he was acting on behalf of the SFT organization would make them criminally and legally responsible but because they were not providing a product or service there is no negligence. However, there can be an argument made or at least a conversation surrounding negligence of GSU. The name of the organization, Students for Fair Tuition, seems to indicate that it was a school sanctioned group. At the very least it appears the school may have known of the group’s existence. If the school approved of the organization and was aware of the potential explosiveness of the situation, it may have breached its duty of care to protect anyone on campus from the risk of unreasonable harm or risk of harm. This is similar to what is going on with the Virginia Tech shootings and the questions as to whether the school was aware of the danger presented by the shooter and failed to act. The school was not the proximate cause (actual cause) or causation in fact of the event so it seems that the only way to tie the school into the cause would be the argument surrounding the breach of duty of care. The laws that were violated were addressed in the items that......

I would check the SOP first and see what AR’s apply then go from there. 3. Reflect on the ethical values and their ramifications. a. The Army values that I find applicable to this situation are duty, loyalty, Integrity, and respect. I will take time to reflect on each of these values as I feel they apply. Duty: I believe that it is my duty to do the right thing here and gather all the facts of the situation from all parties involved. Before developing a course of action that may hinder the careers of both myself and SFC Sharp. Loyalty: My loyalties are both with my unit and the NCO corp. I feel I need to do what’s best for both. Integrity: If I do not take the time and develop the best COA for this situation. My character as an NCO will be compromised. Respect: Knowing that SFC Sharp is a good NCO I owe it to him to discuss this matter with him personally before taking it to higher. Because it may have been a simple mistake. One that may not have to jeopardize his career if it is handled internally first. 4. Consider the applicable morale principles. a. FedEx/UPS FedEx and UPS are the two main competitors that Wired Inc. will be up against when trying to increase our cliental. One of the major strengths that these two companies have is the long standing they have had in the marketplace. UPS was founded in 1907 and FedEx was founded in 1971. They have established their name and brand with the public to where when a customer needs to ship something automatically they look up the nearest location to them. ...full time job for our astrophysicists they search day in and day out looking and seeking for life on other planets and in other solar systems. The life on earth as we know it can only exist because we have the right mixture of properties to provide us with the perfect planet setting and atmosphere. Describe the properties of life on Earth. All living creatures and organisms have the same basic characteristics and/or functions, sensitivity, response or order to their environment, development and growth, reproduction, homeostasis, regulation and processing energy. When we view these together the eight items define life. Organisms and creatures are organized and coordinated structures that consist of one or more cells. Even the very simple, single-celled organisms and creatures are complex. Inside each cell atoms make up molecules, these atoms and molecules in turn make up organelles and other inclusions. In a multicellular organism or creature similar cells from tissues. These tissues in turn work together to form organs. Organs collaborate to form organ systems. Organisms respond to different stimulus. A good example of this is that plants grow toward the light they also climb on walls and fences or respond to the touch. Even the smallest bacteria can move away or toward chemicals. Movement toward this is considered a good response, while movement away from this is considered a negative response. The single celled creatures or organisms multiply by duplicating...

Advertisement Essay

...ARRL Icom IC-7100 Advertisement Review   ARRL Icom IC-7100 Advertisement Review Most magazines will have a limited number of ads that will grab the attention of the reader. The majority of ads will be passed by due to lack of interest or the fact that they do not stand out and beg the attention of the reader. This can be an issue even if they contain something that may be of interest due to the simple fact of being overly informational with a great deal of fine print and lack of a color image that jumps off the page to grab the attention of the reader. The advertisement for the new Icom IC-7100 (QST Magazine 2013) demonstrates clear, simple and eye catching advertisement that stands out from many other ads for equipment and services. Yet it does not over power the reader with too much information, but invites the reader into researching the advertised item further on his or her own by providing a website address and brief list of items that can be accessed through it. In breaking down the ad it is a full page advertisement conveniently located next to a very busy collage of other ads all with very small print. That does help the Icom advertisement (QST Magazine 2013) stand out. The ad does use a couple images with in it, but the eye is drawn to the main image first that does include the common and patented technology trademark. In big bold letters stating “Creating New Standards for HF Mobiles”(QST Magazine 2013). That further peaks the curiosity of the......

Organizational Transformation

...success and failures. However, because the leadership is so strong and thought of every aspect of the organization, following the simple steps to running a successful organization is a proven system that anyone can do. With that being said, if you are great at playing follow the leader, there will be no reason for a great deal of innovation because all that needs to be done, has been done. The one innovation that is promoted is the way to build confidence and posture. Something leaders teach but each individual has to find it in them what it takes to motivate them to implement the changes that need to be made. The leaders, which are the founder, the vice president of sales and the master distributor do more focusing on the creation of the innovation in my organization. The leaders that have been in the trenches and made a substantial amount of success within the organization focus more on managing and sustaining the innovation in my organization. According to the structure of the organization, not much innovation is needed to be successful. The structure is designed to be simple and easy to duplicate throughout the entire organization, making it possible for anyone that has a desire to make it to the top to not only make it, but also experience significance throughout their journey. Tales of Simple

...America and dehumanization The text “Tales of Simple: Coffee break” is written by Langston Hughes in 1965. The text was written a couple of years after that the conflict between black and white Americans peaked. Simple and “I” are two black men, who in their coffee break, is talking about how Simple’s boss comes with racial statements. Simple is tired of the fact that black people always is seen as a unit, and not as individuals. Simple’s boss claims that Simple represents the Negros, as Martin Luther King, and other famous Afro-Americans do. Simple then interrupts him, where he says that one man represents himself. In addition, they also come by the fact that the white only integrates them self with the black to a certain point, where they expect that the blacks should integrate with the white people at its fullest. Simple means that there should be a reintegration, whereas the white also should adjust after the black people’s culture and way of living. How should the integration take place? In many years, even after the conflict between the black and the white, all the Negros were seen as one kind of people with the same interests and political preferences. This has been one of the main problems related to the segregation in the USA. “And being white and curious, my boss keeps asking me just what does THE Negro want. Yesterday he tackled me during the coffee break, talking about THE Negro. He always says ‘THE Negro’ as if there were not 50-11 different kinds of Negroes in...

Evolution

...best ideas) it is very simple. Despite its simplicity, since the publication of the theory right up until today, it has widely been misunderstood. Ernst Mayr, in his book One Long Argument (1991) provides a useful way of breaking down the process into just five facts and three inferences, or conclusions, drawn from the five facts; they can be linked in a flow diagram: Figure: modified from One Long Argument by Ernst Mayr (1991) The first inference is drawn from three facts which Darwin observed in the natural world around him. He saw that organisms produce more offspring than is required to replace themselves, so population sizes should increase rapidly (think about the number of frogspawn laid each year, or how many eggs a spider lays). That’s fact one: a fancy word for this over-reproduction is ‘super fecundity’. However Darwin saw for himself, and confirmed his observation with others, that population numbers tend to stay at about the same level (you don’t see a doubling of the number of frogs or mice in your garden each year do you?): that’s fact two. What accounts for this disparity? Darwin found the answer with another fact: resources, such as food, water or places to sleep or mate, are limited. A major influence on Darwin observing this fact was his reading the work of Thomas Malthus who published a paper stating that the human population was increasing at a rapid pace and would soon run out of food, water and space. These are three simple facts which Darwin put......

Simple Living

...Studenter eksamen – del prøve 2 - Task A 1. The first text is written by Elizabeth Scott. She is introducing us to her opinion about the theme “Simple living”, which is a very positive view. She is telling us about how we should and should not live. Her statement is that we need to “pare down and get rid of all the extra “stuff” that we think we need, but do not”. By getting all the “stuff” we can live without out of our way, we can focus and remember to enjoy the real important things in life, which could be all kinds of things, including relationships: family, friends, boyfriends/girlfriends and so on. When we are not thinking about the shallow “stuff” we will have some extra time in our schedule, which will result in less people suffering from stress and more people having/building stronger relationships. And with that extra time, there would also be time to consider how to be a better person and maybe if you are lucky find “your true self” or “who you really are”. Only few people have the option to execute the “simple living”, but many do it because they want to save money and does not have any other choice. Text two is a written interview which is led by Rachel Fudge. The person who is interviewed is the journalist Judith Levine. The interview is based on Judith Levine’s own book called “Not buying it: My year without shopping”. The book is about how she and her partner made it through a whole year without them buying anything that was not necessary. They......
