Six Dimensions of Health Worksheet

Part 1

For each of the following six dimensions of health, list at least one characteristic, activity, belief, or attitude that reflects that dimension in your life. Provide a brief explanation with each example. Refer to Ch. 1 in the text for explanations of these dimensions.

Physical health: Exercising and eating healthy is very vital to all my organs for an optimal performance of my physical body. Even though I do not smoke or consume alcohol, I still have a fear of developing illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases etc if I don’t exercise and eat healthy. It has been a challenge for me to stick to a strict regime of exercising. I feel if I don’t incorporate exercise in to my life it will affect my ability to perform my daily living activities if I should become a victim to such diseases. My body will not be as easily responsive to normal chores and it will limit my physical performance.

Social health: Not being physically fit and succumbing to any disease will be a huge hindrance to my social health. It will have a negative impact on my personal relationship with my family in the sense that they may feel I am taking time away from their lives to cater to my needs which I am unable to do for myself. I will be unable to attend social gatherings to interact with people and will definitely be unable to adapt to social situations such as attending a wedding, parties, community gatherings etc. I am an extrovert so definitely my social health will be affected greatly if my physical health creates a barrier for my presence at social gatherings.

Intellectual health: Definitely for me education is my weakest link. I feel a lack of knowledge will influence my decisions in all areas of my life. I will be unable to make positive and rightful decisions if I am not aware of the consequences due to my lack of ability to think and reason objectively, analyze and use my brain power effectively to meet life’s challenges.

Environmental health: I am a great believer of recycling. When we recycle, we will help to improve our environment by reducing and conserving waste, electricity, and water. By doing so, we will have fewer Plants and Factories producing less chemicals and reducing air pollution. I also believe that air pollution has a lot to do with climatic changes. Going Green is a great alternative to help improve our environmental conditions.

Emotional health: I just took a quiz last night and found out I have mild symptoms of depression. In all my life I never really worry about my emotional health or I am not aware of any emotional health issue and it has never been brought to my attention. I have always been able to express myself emotionally whenever appropriate and controlling them whenever not. I may have emotional issues but I feel I function very well with my ability to cope, understand, discuss, relate, and listen to others with love and trust. I have lots of self confidence in myself and I feel emotionally fit.

Spiritual health: I believe in a supreme being in our universe and by attending temple on a regular basis gave me an achievement of bliss and inner peace. Although many people has different beliefs in a supreme being and find salvation of worshipping in various forms, I believe that taking time to offer prayers and meditation enrich your well being into a state of true bliss and peace. This gives us an introspective and balanced to a meaningful life.

Part 2

In approximately 125 to 200 words, describe health and wellness in your own words using the ideas and concepts for each of the six dimensions of health.

I personally believe health and wellness carries a wide scope of elements that is needed to fulfill and enrich our lives with a feeling of true well-being. Many people have their beliefs and different concepts of what health and wellness means. For me, it is incorporating all the elements and dimensions of health which is physical, social, intellectual, environmental, emotional and spiritual health. We need to have a balance of all these elements in our lives for us perform at our optimal best. Each element compliments the other. If one element or dimension is not fully optimized, it will definitely create an imbalance of our well-being. Spirituality promotes bliss and peace within our self and in turn that helps us to control our emotional state of mind. Having a stable emotional mind gives us the opportunity to nourish our intellectual element, and that helps us to change our behavior pattern to reinforce our mind to set attainable goals of eating healthy and works towards becoming physically fit. Being physical fit removes all self doubts and promotes positive confidence to participate in social gatherings. You are able to interact with people on an intellectual level and to have more satisfying personal relationships. When you have self esteem and a positive outlook in life, and you take proactive steps towards contribution of environmental changes and development, you are on your way to living a healthier lifestyle which will improve overall wellness.
