Six Sigma Six sigma is a customer focused change strategy, used in business to help improve performance. It utilizes a systematic approach to improve the way people do process improvement. Six sigma helps businesses meet the two main goals of any business. That is to make money and satisfy customer needs. It also gives a business the ability to deliver accelerated results. Six sigma is a business enhancer that is embedded with tools and techniques that people can learn to improve their processes. There are two six sigma sub-methodologies. They are called DMAIC and DMADV. The DMAIC process of six sigma stands for: define, measure, analyze, improve, control. This process is an improvement system used for existing processes that fall below specification and need incremental improvement. This is also known as continuous improvement. With this process a business constantly seeks ways to improve. It has several benefits such as, an increase in customer loyalty, a reduction in customer dissatisfaction, and a reduction in opportunities for competition to get an edge in. This is routine action taken by workers to make minor improvements. This methodology is usually lead by workers close to the business and is only focuses on tasks in a specific area. The second sub-methodology of six sigma is DMADV. This stands for: define, measure, analyze, design, verify. This process is an improvement system used to develop new processes or products. This is also known as reengineering. It is the radical redesign of business processes, organizational structures, information systems, and values of the organization to achieve a breakthrough in business results. In comparison to the DMAIC approach, the DMADV approach is very broad and usually cuts across several departments. When it is implemented strong action is needed to solve serious problems. ...Six Sigma is a revolutionary business process geared toward dramatically reducing organizational inefficiencies that trans- lates into bottom-line profitability. It started in the 1980s at Motorola; then, organizations such as GE, Allied Signal, and Seagate worked with the initiative during the 1990s and made it the most successful business initiative of the era. Key to the Six Sigma methodology of the 1990s is a five- step process—Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC). By systematically applying these steps (with the appropriate tools), practitioners of this approach have been able to save substantial dollars. The basis of Six Sigma is measuring a process in terms of defects. The statistical concept of six sigma means our processes are working nearly perfectly, delivering only 3.4 defects per million opportunities (DPMO). Sigma (the Greek letter σ) is a statistical term that measures standard deviation. In the context of management, it’s used to measure defects in the outputs of a process and show how far the process deviates from perfection. A one-sigma process produces 691462.5 defects per million opportunities, which translates to a percentage of satisfactory outputs of only 30.854%. That’s obviously really poor perform- ance.
