Skeptible Thinking Paper After watching some of these videos and reading comments and skepticism about these so called "psychics" or "healers", the only thing that would cross my mind is the ability that these men and women have to actually try and manipulate the weak minded to fill their own pockets. From the very beginning the first thing I thought was, how desperate were these people for financial gain? The believers who fell for the scams were sadly just being human and as a human, we like to put our faith in something to feel more at ease about anything that is bothering us. Which is why religion is an often easy target for scammers because there is no definite proof since it is all based on faith, and anybody willing to be credible enough to go in the lords name must be telling the truth, but the power of money is far more powerful then the faith of these "healers". Sylvia Browne on the other hand is a different story with the same context. She also uses an idea or faith which cannot be proven to make a personal gain off of others losses. In her videos, she seems absolutely sure in her readings but we find out later, almost everything she had said was false. Now, if a "real" credible psychic could come up with these accusations in front of millions and know that they are false, what would be the reason? Money! Money is the fuel source that drives the train of deceit for these people. I personally believe that these psychics or spiritual healers are absolutely fake and there is an uncountable amount of evidence to prove it. There was an article about a fake spiritual healer who was arrested and they found a copious amount of marijuana and money stashed away with ten of his accomplices. Since there has been an increase in people seeking spiritual healers, there has been an increase in the rise of people in this profession. It would only make sense that there would be a rise because people are seeking some kind of financial gain in this plummeting economy. Which in turn, the economy is what is leading people to seek spiritual healers and psychics for guidance and something to look forward to. I was reading along about Silvia Browne and found a website exposing her and alot of the tricks and scams she used on t.v. to become famous. There is a laundry list of explanations for every kind of act that a psychic would or could use to further persuade the audience that they are supernatural. But, we can't ignore the fact that some of these people actually do believe that they are being touched by God, or another higher being. Throughout history there is multiple reports and stories of somebody who has a spiritual connection with God and lots of times they are simply and plainly delusional. This could be brought on by drugs or alcohol causing the person influenced to truly believe what they are perceiving are messages from God or from a higher being. The video of the preacher Benny Hinn is the perfect example of a drunken man preaching the words of God and displaying the "power God has bestowed upon him." There really isn't much to say about this besides how can people believe a man who is drunk in public trying to deliver a speech and heal others. Perhaps the most unbelievable scam about psychics are mediums who can communicate with dead! Thanks to t.v. and other sources of entertainment, these mediums have been gaining an awful amount of popularity. I believe that only crazies and extremely gullible people actually believe in this stuff! Since it's on television of course it gives it the sense that it is actually true, and it appeals to the viewers because it is supernatural! But, like I said before, the people who actually do these sort of things sometimes do believe in their "powers" and it is unfair to question their beliefs as humans. Of course we may come up with our own opinions about it but we can truly never know what is going on mentally, based on a psychic level.

Diana Halpern's (1996) Framework for Critical Thinking
Definition: Critical thinking is the use of cognitive skills or strategies that increase the probability of a good outcome. CT is purposeful, reasoned, and goal-directed.
 Answer the following questions:
 1. What is the goal?
First step in improving thinking is to be clear about the goal or goals. Sometimes there are multiple goals; sometimes the goal changes as we work on a problem. If the overall goal is not OPERATIONAL (i.e., "get a good grade" or "reach a good decision"), then identify operational goals (write clearly, address all elements of the assignment, evaluate the consequences of alternative decisions).
 2. What is known?
Review what is known. You may know more than you realize, once you start taking a census. You may also realize that some of the apparently information is not certain at all. If you are completing an assignment or solving a problem for someone else, review guidelines for the assignment and ask yourself what the person cares about and values in a solution.

...audience think that only liberals are friends of the “working man.” Fallacies: Scapegoat The speaker says “Boss Jim W. Gettys' political machine -- now in complete control of the government of this State! I made no campaign promises, because until a few weeks ago I had no hope of being elected.” The power of Getty’s “political machine” is purely to put blame elsewhere as an excuse for the speaker’s neglect to make campaign promises. Scare tactic The speaker says “The working man and the slum child know they can expect my best efforts in their interests. The decent, ordinary citizens know that I'll do everything in my power to protect the underprivileged, the underpaid, and the underfed!” in an attempt to scare the audience into thinking the opposing party will not protect the underprivileged, underpaid, and underfed. Ad Hominen: Multiple times the speaker attacks “boss Jim W. Gettys’” but neglects to ever mention specific policies of Gettys that he disagrees with. It appears as though he simply has a personal vendetta against Gettys. Strawman: “Well, I'd make my promises now if I weren't too busy arranging to keep them.” This statement’s vagueness appears to be an effort for the speaker to keep from having to make campaign promises, while still appeasing the audience’s need for campaign promises. Rhetorical Devices: Alliteration During the beginning of the speech, the campaigner and Kane speak in alliteration: “I am speaking of Charles Foster Kane, the......

The Healing Hospital: Serving God and His People

...Running head: THE HEALING HOSPITAL The Healing Hospital: Serving God and His People Sandra Grand Canyon University Spirituality in Healthcare HLT 310V August 28, 2011 The Healing Hospital Paradigm The Healing Hospital paradigm does not only bring love and care back to health care but radical loving care to the bedside. This concept, although seemingly progressive, borrows and puts into action theories of such great theorist as Jean Watson that believe in treating the mind, body, and soul (Watson, 2009). The average hospital mission statement is filled with promises of caring compassionate health care, but as with society today, they are mostly talk and no action. The Healing Hospital brings the talk into action bringing the radical care from the management down, believing that each person has a calling not a job that simply ends in provision. The spiritual aspect is brought back into health care for the patients as well as the staff, where each meeting is considered a sacred encounter. Although this sounds like a hospital made in heaven, it is a reality for such hospitals as Baptist Trust in Nashville, Tennessee and Mercy Gilbert Hospital in Gilbert, Arizona (Chapman, 2007). Mind, Body, and Soul So what are the mind, body and soul? The mind is defined as the part that processes reason, thinks, feels, wills, perceives, and judges the processes of the human brain. It is the totality of the conscious and unconscious thought processes and activities (Dictionary...

Critical Thinking

...Critical Thinking MGT/350 May 30, 2011 Critical thinking is the process of evaluating the decisions one makes, while searching for an alternative to that decision that may produce a more productive outcome. Critical thinking is a mode of thinking in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully analyzing, assessing, and reconstructing it (Paul and Elder, 2006). Critical thinking helps people improve on their decision making process by providing an alternative perspective on thinking. Making a decision is simple and can happen instinctively, but finding or thinking of an alternative requires skills one may not be accustomed to using. Some important aspects of critical thinking are that the thinker has to be open-minded and mindful of alternatives, Identifies reasons, assumptions and conclusions, as well as asking appropriate clarifying questions (Ennis, 2003-2011). Being open-minded is an important aspect of becoming a critical thinker, because open-mindedness helps the thinker take into consideration alternative motives. One must be able to see and think of alternatives to problems that may arise by challenging the status quo. The normal everyday way of thinking has to be put to the test and challenged when critical thinking is involved.
