Skill Practice Exercise: Our Iceberg is Melting July 16, 2015

A lesson I learned in this video is to always share valuable information with your manager. This includes issues, breakthroughs – anything that you find of value and feel that change needs to happen in order to better shape the outcome of the situation. Ensure to speak up and present your thoughts in a valid and constructive way. As a manger the lessons here are to always ensure you listen to your employees carefully and trust what they say has importance. It is the manager’s responsibility to probe for answers about issues and to seek proof of its validity. Next, if there is a bigger issue at hand that cannot be resolved by the manager then he/she must bring it forward to the leadership team.
Leadership Lessons –the leadership team may not always be on the same page. Like in every organization there are the “yes” people agree with everything you say and others that challenge people’s point of view. In this video I learned the 8-step process for leading change. Step one is to establish a sense of urgency. The leadership team communicates what the issue is and how they will deal with it. Second step is to create the guiding coalition. The five smartest penguins are tasked with finding the solution to the issue. As per this video, each leader has specific strengths and contributes to the solution differently. The lessons here is to look within the organization and find individuals that are best suited to solve the situation at hand. Step three is to develop a change vision. The five individuals brainstorm ideas together to find the best solution. A lesson here is to ensure each leader contributes evenly and is open to other ideas. We must always be respectful of others and value their feedback, even when it’s different than our own. Step four is to communicate

While this score indicated that I have a higher level of self-awareness than the average business school students in the comparison group, it also meant that I have room for improvement.
