Sleeping Patterns and Academics: How Does This Affect College Students?
Introduction
College students' sleeping schedules have changed as they entered their college years of life. Sleep is very important to every student and without it they might not perform well academically. The amount of sleep is not the only important factor but the quality of sleep as well. This research will address the sleeping patterns of college students and how it affects their performance in their academics.
Literature Review Walter Buboltz Jr. conducted research in order to view the sleep habits and patterns of college students. Sleep is vital to every human being, but Buboltz Jr. believes “this health need may be overlooked by college and university students in today's fast paced society” (Buboltz Jr. 2009:113). What Buboltz Jr. is attempting to answer with his research is why college students overlook the importance of sleep and how their sleeping patterns are affecting their daily routines. The sample that Buboltz Jr. used was 742 students, with 220 being men and 522 being women. He used two sleep questionnaires to ask his gathered sample of students; the first was the Sleep Quality Index and the second was the Sleep Habits Questionnaire. Both of these were included in a survey packet that were given to students in undergraduate psychology courses (Buboltz Jr. 2009:115). After collecting the data Buboltz Jr had the final result. About 11.5% of the sample reported good sleep quality, 65.9% reported occasional sleeping problems, and 22.6% reported poor sleep quality. Also, more than 54% of the students reported feeling tired during the mornings. In addition the average time for students to fall asleep was more than 23 minutes and the average hours of sleep obtained per week was 7 hours and 37 minutes. Furthermore, the results of…...

You may ask yourself if this means that you have a sleeping disorder. What kinds of sleeping disorders exist and what causes them. Some of us have heard terms like, insomnia, narcolepsy, sleep apnea, nightmares, and night terror, but how do these sleep disorders effect an individual? To understand some sleep disorders we must first understand the cycle of sleep. Most of us believe that sleep is what occurs at night when we close our eyes. This is true, but sleep is actually 5 different patterns or stages of activity in the brain. When we first lay down and close our eyes, this is the beginning of stage one sleep. In this stage you are no longer completely aware of your external environment. A slight noise or light touch could wake you. You become relaxed, your breathing becomes regular, and you have disconnected thoughts. After about 10 minutes you enter stage two of sleep. Stage two is a transitional stage, just like stage one, but on an EEG (electroencephalogram), which measures the electrical output of the brain, the brain activity is different. This stage takes a louder noise or heavier touch to wake a person from sleep. It is also at this stage when sudden jerks in your arms or legs cause you to wake suddenly. These stages are known as EEG: stage 1, stage 2, stage 3, and stage 4. When transitioning from alert wakefulness to stage 1, there are alpha waves that punctuate the low voltage, high frequency waves of alert wakefulness. The EEG voltage will increase gradually, while the EEG frequency will decrease gradually, as the individual progresses to stages 2, 3, and 4.
