Ali Baba and the Amazon: two in-depth comparison of e-commerce

In the mid-1990s, the Amazon founder Jeff Bezos began by focusing on just selling books. They have since grown into their monster today, and now North America's largest online retailer.
Alibaba was founded in China by Ma technical or business background in 1999 did not have a horse Bezos. He raised money from family and friends launched Alibaba.com - a B2B portal connecting Western companies and Chinese manufactureres.

Next Session: Guessing Game •  It’s simple (less than 5 minutes): •  Fill the form on the website online !! Before Sunday at noon. •  Tab “Simulations and Cases,” “Guessing Game” Guess the Number… Each player must submit an integer between 0 and 100. Call these submissions Xi Compute the mean of all the Xi and call it M The winner is the person whose guess is closest to 2/3M Example: Three players submit bids of 25, 50, and 75. M = 50 thus 2/3M = 33.3 The player who submitted 25 would win. We’re doing: Perfect Competition •  A perfectly competitive market has: •  A large number of small players, i.e. fragmented supply and demand. •  A homogeneous product. •  In a perfectly competitive market, firms are price-takers, and MR=p. Firms produce quantity Q such that p = MC. The firm’s supply curve is the inverse of the marginal cost curve. •  Construct the market’s supply curve by adding the firms’ supply curves horizontally. Use the market’s supply curve to forecast the effect of demand shocks on the market’s price. •  The effect of demand shocks on the market price are larger when supply is inelastic. •  At this point, is our analysis complete??? •  The decision of Alusaf depends on the forecast of the price of aluminum and the average cost of production. ...In American discourse separation of powers is more a name than a description. None of the three branches (legislative, executive, or judicial) of the national government are clearly separate from one another. Congress, for example, has an impeachment club to check the others; the president's veto power is plainly legislative in nature. No wonder James Madison in The Federalist, no. 47, undertook to answer the Anti‐Federalist charge that “The several departments of power are [not separated but] blended in such a manner as at once to destroy all symmetry and beauty of form, and to expose some of the essential parts of the edifice to the danger of being crushed by the disproportionate weight of other parts.” Madison's answer was that Montesquieu—the “oracle” of separation—did not mean that “departments ought to have no partial agency in, or control over, the acts of each other.” He meant rather that “the whole power of one department [should not be] exercised by the same hands which possess the whole power of another department.” The merit of “blending,” according to Madison, was that, along with bicameralism and federalism, it produced a safety net of “checks and balances.” A crucial problem is that split power inevitably entails split accountability. No wonder then that so many difficulties in American government spring ultimately from its divided power system. In contrast, the parliamentary system seeks safety in clear, direct lines of electoral accountability—and less in a...

...request, I attended a seminar about the use of PowerPoint in business presentations. You suggested that there might be tips that I would learn that we could share with other staff members, many of whom make presentations that almost always include PowerPoint. The speaker, Gary Dixon, made some very good points on the subject of PowerPoint. There were several points of an important nature that are useful in avoiding what he called a “PowerPoint slumber party.” Our staff members should give consideration to the following: Create first the message, not the slide. Only after preparing the entire script should you think about how to make an illustration of it. You should prepare slides with short lines. Your slides should have only four to six words per line. Short lines act as an encouragement to people to listen to you and not read the slide. Don't put each and every thing on the slide. If you put too much on the slide, your audience will be reading Item C while you are still talking about Item A. As a last and final point, she suggested that presenters think in terms of headlines. What is the main point? What does it mean to the audience? Please let me know whether you want me to elaborate and expand on these presentation techniques subsequent to the next staff meeting. Your Name [Your contact information] * I would change that phrase to as you requested * I would take that phrase out; it’s a redundant phrase....

...How to Find Specific Journal Articles: (by Mark James) This is a step-by-step guide to finding specific research articles that you have been given the complete reference for (e.g. for seminar readings listed on Moodle, or for articles cited in lectures). To find articles when you do not have a full reference for (e.g. when you’re looking for research on a topic/theory/model generally) please refer to the slide “Finding Sources” of the Study Skills slides provided on Moodle. All seminar readings are available to download via the University of Kent library website using the following steps. Example - how to find: Poropat, A.E. (2009). A meta-analytic analysis of the five-factor model of personality and academic performance. Psychological Bulletin, 135 (2), 322-38. Step 1: Go to http://www.kent.ac.uk/library/ - click ‘Search for journals” and enter title of the journal (e.g. Psychological Bulletin) here: Step 2: Click on one of the search results: Some journals are accessible through multiple providers (e.g. PsycARTICLES, Academic Search Complete, Wiley-Blackwell Full Collection), with varying levels of access. Check the date of the article you’re searching for was published and select a provider which holds the journal published that year. Takes him 50% longer to complete audit work than his predecessorBo Chambers and Moe (his brother), partners of the firm, told Kevin that they wouldhave to bill his clients a larger fee because the audit took longer They had fixed budgets for these audits. Meaning every hour over the budgeted timewould cost them money. Kevinthen suggests he can take some of the work home and work on it onweekends as well and they wouldn’t have to pay him or bill the clients the larger fee Boe and Moe can’t say yes but leave it up to Kevin to figure out what he should do. 2.Identify Stakeholders Kevin Love Moe (Kevin’s brother) Bo ChambersStooges LLP Case Analysis: Eating Time As for Kevin Lowe:  When Bo and Moe told Kevin that he was inefficient in his work and that every hour over the planed time led to the money over the budget, he answered quickly that whether they asked him to cut down the work he did rather than whether they asked him to try his best to increase his productivity. The immediate reaction may reflect that Kevin does not consider ethics important as a CPA firm requires. In order to stay in the firm in the future, Kevin was willing to spend his private time without overtime pay. However, I strongly suspect that whether he will complete the work qualified and that if he becomes the formal employee of the firm, whether he will keep his ‘enthusiasm’ because of his...

I would try to avoid overloading her with anything I think she may not need to deal with at the time. If I have further trouble understanding any issues she has I would suggest that we try to start from the beginning and try to take her through the process step by step and from there figure out the best process for her to create this project. Once we figured out what she wants then I would go back to trying to take her through the basic process of creating a presentation, advising her how to create a slide, edit slides, and how to add in pictures and video’s as well as graphs for her statistics. If we had further issues with her understanding my instructions then I would recommend to the customer to review any online how-to steps for creating a presentation.
