Small Network Sales Proposal
Bill Stewart
Strayer University
June 11, 2011

My neighbor is starting a small billing business and has asked me to price out and design network for him. He will be starting from scratch and in talking to him about his needs, I have determined that what he wants is the following; he needs a server that will support at least 3 users. Also he wants 2 workstations and 2 laptops. He wants Wi-Fi to connect all of this plus Internet access and multiple email addresses. Also he wants this network to be totally secure as his coming is going to do medical billing procedures.
Here are my suggestions to him as described in this proposal.
Since this small business is interested in a dedicated server, I am suggesting the HP ProLiant N40L 1P 2GB-U Emb SATA NHP 250GB LFF 150W PS Cube MicroServer. This server will meet all of the client's needs at this point. The price is relatively small and the client will find that this system is easy to operate and it is simple to administer to. Also this small server is designed to make adding drives or peripherals a minimal effort. Obviously the space saving design will make it ideal for a small office. This server is also reliable and it's also is expandable. Its error checking and correction (ECC) memory minimizes the likelihood of memory corruption. This server comes with AMD Turion™ II Neo N40L processor (1.5 GHz, 15W, 2MB) and being RAID 0 and 1, it prevents data loss and ensures around the clock reliability. The server contains 2 (two) HP 500GB 3G SATA 7.2K rpm LFF (3.5-inch) Non-hot Plug Midline Hard Drives. It also can also support up to four LFF SATA pluggable hard disks and up to 8 GB of RAM. The SATA hard drive portfolio is categorized into two categories; Entry (ETY) and Midline (MDL) hard drives. Entry and Midline SATA hard drives provide the best price advantage for lower workload environments.
This server comes with 2GB PC3-10600E 1x2GB 2Rank Memory, Embedded SATA RAID Controller with Embedded RAID (0,1), 2 HP 250GB 3G SATA Non-Hot Plug 7,200rpm 3.5 inch Entry Hard Drive (1-year warranty), HP Half-Height SATA DVD-RW Black Bezel Optical Drive Kit, embedded HP NC107i PCI-Express Gigabit Ethernet Server Adapter, Wireless Network Adapter, HP 150w Non-Hot Plug, Non-Redundant Power Supply and 1 Year Next Day Parts Replacement, 1 Year Labor and 1 Year Onsite support.
I have also priced out for him a HP RDX160 Internal Removable Disk Backup System. It's affordable, rugged and backing up is simple with drag and drop file access. He can protect his server and the workstations if he chooses so because of the HP RDX Continuous Data Protection Software. The RDX Removable Disk Backup System offers fast disk based performance with the ability to store 160 GB, 320 GB, 500 GB or 1 TB of data on a single removable disk cartridge at speeds of up to 108 GB per hour. They are portable, durable and rugged removable disk cartridges which he can simply and securely store backups off site for data protection.
I have advised the client to purchase three (3) HP RDX 160GB Removable Disk Cartridges to start out with for his backups but strongly encourage him to expand that total to fourteen (14) for two weeks’ worth of backups, then he can put them back in rotation every two weeks.
This server will come with Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard with a 5 User Client Access License. As far as the Server operating system is concerned I do not see him growing out of this for quite a while.
Also I have priced out for him Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 Small Business Edition Basic (10 User) for complete virus, website and intrusion protection. In my opinion this is the most overwhelming threat that any individual or business (whether big or small) faces in this age and locking your network down is a must. Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition protects computers and servers with the most effective small business antivirus, anti-malware technologies available in a single, integrated solution. This software separates safe files from those at risk for faster, fewer, smarter scans. It will not slow users down or swallow up system resources and eliminates up to 70% of scan overhead for performance so users won’t know it is there. I strongly encourage the client to purchase this software.
I have suggested the Cisco RV220W Wireless Network Security Firewall Wired and Wireless Connectivity for Small Office. This firewall connects easily to the Internet, to other locations, and to employees working remotely. The employees can have fast access to large files and multimedia applications. This wireless router features high-performance Gigabit Ethernet connections, including a 4-port switch, and a high-speed, selectable dual-band wireless-N access point, as well as support for Small Business Quick VPN software. Also contains flexibility for highly secure, remote connections, the RV220W supports both IP Security (IPsec) and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) VPN, often referred to as hybrid VPN. IPsec VPN enables other offices to connect just as if they were physically connected to the primary business network. SSL VPN, which allows secure connections through any web browser, is application-specific, offering a means of extending controlled access to business partners and others, without compromising critical data.
The RV220W provides strong security with proven stateful packet inspection (SPI) firewall, plus advanced wireless security to help keep business assets safe. The firewall offers port forwarding and triggering, Denial of Service (DoS) prevention, and software-based DMZ. WPA2 and AES encryption provide advanced protection to allow clients to connect to their business network safely. The RV220W can create up to 16 VLANs will full access control and content filtering. It is a great investment for the client.
For the two workstations I am proposing the HP 3400 Microtower PC Essential (model # A7L23UT#ABA) containing 300W power supply active PFC, Intel Pentium Core 630 with Intel HD Graphics (2.70 GHz, 3 MB cache, 2 cores), Windows 7 Professional 32 bit Operating System, Intel H61 Express Chipset, 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory (1x2GB), 500GB 7200RPM SATA 3.0GB/s 1st Hard Drive, Integrated Intel® HD graphics, DVD-ROM drive, HP USB Standard Keyboard, HP USB Optical Mouse, Realtek ALC656 High Definition audio codec, Integrated Realtek RTL8111EL PCI-E.
Also these workstations come with Microsoft Office 2010, HP Power Assistant Windows 7 32 bit Factory Image Recovery, HP Protect Tools Security Suite for Small Business, 1 year parts, and labor and onsite service standard warranty.
The laptops were priced out as the HP 635 LJ512UT Notebook PC, AMD Dual-Core E-300 1.3GHz, 4GB DDR3, 320GB HDD, Radeon HD 6310, DVDRW, 15.6" Display, Windows 7 Operating System 64-bit, 802.11b/g/n, Wi-Fi, and Microsoft Office 2010.Given HP's reputation of dependability and support, it is a worthwhile investment for the client.
I have suggested to the client to go with cable Internet access through his local cable provider which is Suddenlink, since he has Television and Phone access through them now. It will provide a convenience for him of one stop shopping. Suddenlink provides the cable modem, their security keyed firewall and 5 email address (ex. - john.doe@suddenlink.net) for $98.00 per month. I would also make the suggestion that the client go to outlook.com and establish email addresses for free if he does not care for Suddenlink’s email system.
For the server, workstations and the 2 laptops I am proposing that he purchase five (5) APC uninterruptable power backups in case of power outages or power spikes.
Four (4) of them will be for the workstations/laptops; APC BE550G Power Backups, 8 Outlet 550VA 120V which, in a power loss situation will give the client’s 10 minutes to save their work and shut down the pc. Since two of them are laptops it is not as critical considering laptops gives one the option of operating off of the battery or power. Still it is better to error on the side of caution, especially if one is dealing with critical data.
The HP LaserJet Pro M1217nfw Multifunction Printer will be suitable for this time for the client. It can also copy, scan and fax as well. It has the capability to print up to 19 pages per minute and in accordance to the network being setup for the client, it is wireless too.
Summing up the total package for the network I have come up with the following figures: 1 | HP ProLiant MicroServer
AMD Turion™ II Neo N40L processor (1.5 GHz, 15W, 2MB)
HP 2GB PC3-10600E 1x2GB 2Rank Memory
Embedded SATA RAID Controller with Embedded RAID (0,1)
HP 250GB 3G SATA Non-Hot Plug 7,200rpm 3.5 inch Entry Hard Drive (1-year warranty)

The schematic for the proposed wireless network is as follows:
As you can see the wireless schematic diagram represents the basic outline of his small business network. Beginning at the Internet connection with Suddenlink his provider, going into their internet cable modem (SMC modem - SMC8014WN router / gateway), the router is physically connected via Ethernet cable to the Cisco WiFi Firewall/Switch. At this point the Cisco ASA 5505 Firewall - Switch is broadcasting to the server and workstations and printer. It is now the job of going to each workstation, printer and server and tying the entire network into the Cisco switch and making the network become active. Then at the server it becomes a matter of setting each user up individually and giving each user their own rights to their own files, folders, and programs on the server.
This configuration is not difficult and it always has been my opinion, especially for one this small, to keep everything simple for the client, especially when he is going to administer to this himself.

So the total cost is $4641.13 coming in at $358.87 under the $5000.00 limit we had to work with.

Network Science: Facebook

...think that social networks must look random too, however like we studied in this class they aren’t, The Network I chose is Facebook, the most popular social media platform with an estimate of 900 million monthly users. Most of you in this room are on Facebook, and for those of us who aren’t, you for a fact know someone on facebook. I chose facebook to write about because I feel like it is almost identical to actual real life social networks. Some of the topics I’m going to write about are the following ‘ 1. Hubs: People in real life and people on facebook cluster into groups which have hubs. The hubs are usually the social butterflies who know everyone, talk to everyone, and introduce their friends to one another. IF you look at your faceook friends you might have like two large clusters of friends…. This brings me to my second main topic. Small world networks 2. Small world Networks: Facebook is an example of a small world network because through these key people we are all connected to each other through only a few steps. Facebook’s “6 degrees of separation” is actually 4.74. When I moved to university It felt like the degrees of separation on face book was only 1. say story Dheeraj and amman. 3. The third thing Im going to try to do is break down facebook into network science basics. For example: All out accounts are nodes If we follow someone, that’s a directed link If we are friends with someone that’s an undirected network The celebrities...

Windows Server Proposal

...PropAdvwork Proposal University of Maryland University College Shiv LLC will greatly benefit from using Windows Server 2012 to manage their network. Windows Server 2012 brings great updates to security and functionality over past editions of Windows. In this proposal, the major areas I will cover are Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, File Services, Remote Services, and WSUS (Windows Server Update Services). These major roles have features that will make Shiv LLC Company’s infrastructure run smoothly. Active Directory Shiv LLC will have sites across a large geographic location. Because of this, a regional domain model should be used. Domains will be broken down into where users are working. For example, currently Shiv LLC has three locations, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Houston. This means there will be three domains, representing each of these cities. This strategy will make sure the network can be maintained by regional administrators, who will only worry about users in their area of the network. With this style of deployment, it can be difficult to decide what will be the forest root domain. The main staff for the company is in two cities, Dallas and Houston. This makes it difficult to make one of these sites the forest root domain. To make this decision neutral, a dedicated forest root domain can be suggested. This domain will be created only to function as the forest root. It will not contain and users, except for service administrator accounts for the forest root....

Network Diagram

...Request for Proposal The first change I would make would be to delete the router going from the firewall to the phone network. I then would separate the phones from the computers. I would put all of the phones and the phone network on VLAN 10. I moved all of the computers that were originally on VLAN 1 & 10 with the phones to VLAN 8.
