Preparing my things the night before the community immersion to ensure that I do not to forget the things that are needed for the next day’s adventure was something I never regretted. When I had everything prepared and ready, I set the alarm at 7:00 and went to bed right away. Surprisingly, I had thought about the immersion too much before going to sleep, which caused me to have a dream about it. I couldn’t remember how my dream started but what I can remember when I woke up is that we visited a children’s “orphanage” where the kids were actually abused rather than being helped. The group of culprits were just branding themselves as an orphanage in order to get funds to keep for themselves. One of the kids told us that they were forced to work even through undesirable conditions. Thus, our group leader told us that we needed to save these kids from the bad people. We needed to stand up and be their heroes by bringing them home with us. I don’t know what happened next because my alarm woke me up. Nonetheless, I got worried as to how the day would turn out to be. I hoped that we would not face anything really serious and disheartening like my dream. I hoped that our deployment area is filled with happy people who are contented with their lives. True enough, the old people (aka “Mommys”) in the area were enjoying their lives. Although we heard stories where some struggled in the past in making a living for their family, most of them were completely happy with their marriage and family. Also, some told us that they grew up together, that’s why they already know each other very well through the years. However, there was one story that struck me the most. A story shared by one Mommy that told us that it was her child’s dream to study in DLSU, but they did not have the financial capacity to allow her daughter to do so. I was struck because of the thought that there are so many people that are dying to be in my place right now; to be able to experience and study in DLSU. Studying in DLSU oftentimes one thing that I take for granted, not realizing how lucky I am that my parents are able to support my dreams. Hearing her story made me really grateful of my parents and all the hard work that they are pouring.
It was truly a humbling experience to get to know and bond with the Mommys. Little by little, I am changing myself to become someone better in order to be the change that I want to see in the world. I want a world where everyone is happy and content. That’s why everyday, I make sure to put a smile on my face no matter what. As what others say, “Smile--and the world will smile back at you.”

Susie Q vs Happy Smile Maxillofacial Surgery

...The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or EEOC for short is an American agency which checks and manages organisations on unfair firings. The EEOC investigates and then legally helps people who think they have been discriminated against while working in organisations. This discrimination can be of many types such as racial, gender, age or even if a person has some sort of disability. From what I have understood after reading the text, Susie Q was hired by a company called as Happy Smile Maxillofacial Surgery during her second day at work she was fired after her bosses found out that she was pregnant. After doing some research I have found that the Civil Act of 1964 is basically a law which stops discrimination of any kind while Title VII of this Act deals with discrimination in the place of work. In 1978 there was an addition to the Civil Act Title VII where discrimination on the basis of pregnancy was also added and this change was called Pregnancy Discrimination Act. So through this change to Civil Act the dismissal of Susie Q can be considered as going against this law. The question regarding if it was legal to fire Susie Q is a tough question because there are two sides to this story with both sides having valid points. Well first of all if we look at this problem from Susie Q and the EEOC’s side then it is illegal to fire Susie Q because she is protected by the Pregnancy Discrimination Act. Also that she applied and got accepted for the job of a receptionist...

How to Smile

...How to Smile John Lennon once said, “Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears.” If his saying was true, most people must be two or three hundred years old according to their face-book pages. However, their life must be miserable since I hardly see anyone smile to a strange on a busy street anymore. Smile and be happy are not just a formal act of friendliness, but it’s also a way to experience life. Although no one can be happy all the time, you can practice convincing yourself to be happy, because after all life is too precious to waste it. As a waiter, customers often asked me, “You smile all the time, how can you be happy every day?” I answer something along the lines like, “You know, life is good!” or “The smell from our food makes me smile.” If a coworker asks then I typically reply, “It’s a tip from years of experience. The longer you serve, the brighter your smile is.” This response makes my coworker thinks that although work is not like Disneyland, it is still possible to put up a smile and lift up the whole atmosphere. Servers are trained to smile all the time because a business owner knows that happiness is transmittable. A happy server makes happy customers, happy customers will come back and even bring a friend with them next time. As a server, I smile not only to fill up my tip jar, but also to lift the spirits of my coworkers. Hence, I can spread my happiness to everyone they interact with for the rest of the night. There is...

...be unhappy about my life. I don't seek more for happiness. I had developed the capacitiy to enjoy less. I have very few but precious people in my life. I most likely to appear as a timid person but deep inside me, I'm happy. My life is not perfect. I am not perfect. But happiness is about the acceptance of what you already have. If the simple things in life don't put a smile on my face then I will never be truly happy. First thing's first. Who am I? I'd say I'm a typical teenage girl who have just enough craps that I decided to smile and just be happy. I know myself better than anyone else. I can go on a day without talking to anyone. Just me, myself, and I. Not talking to anyone is schematic. I keep things for myself and no one can destroy my reputation for I don't talk. If people call me, I'd turn to them and smile even if it against me. It would be a shame if I don't react on people addressing me but more likely I wouldn't care that much. I don't like being in the spotlight though I accept merits. I like putting my profile low. I don't dream of becoming anything or anyone else other than being me. I can be fake at most times making it look like I have a high self-esteem even if I don't. I have a very selfish sense of myself and that's just me. I am happy that way. My social self depends on who I am. I am a daughter following my parents' creed. I am a sister to inspire my siblings. I am a student studying hard to learn and graduate on time. I am a friend to few that...

Poem

...him I thought about the smile And then realised its worth A single smile like mine Could travel round the earth So if you feel a smile begin Don't leave it undetected Start an epidemic And get the world infected. Reason to Smile How can one smile such sweet smiles,  When one is so saddened by sorrows for miles,  How can I smile the same smiles,  When life brings me nothing but tears,  I wondered for so long,  What reason you had to smile that long,  To keep smiling though troubles come,  And still remain sweet and silently overcome,  It's such a mystery to me,  Your smiles from heaven with glee,  I adore and yet envy thee,  But I'd rather you smile those at me,  I feel happy when I see you smile,  Even if I'm sad and lonely,  Your smiles bring me somewhere,  I don't even know where,  But it was you,  You gave me the reason to smile,  To smile with no reason,  To smile for a smile,  I guess life is just like that,  We need not a reason to smile,  For a smile is the reason itself,  To rejoice and open-heartedly give thanks,  I learned to smile because of you,  Because your smiles bring me joy when blue,  It proves how well and powerful,  A simple sweet smile can become so beautiful,  Smile for the sake of a smile,  Smile for the sake of happiness,  Smile for the sake of life,  Smile because of hope left in life,  Smile my friends,  Smile for me my Love,  Smile those same sweet smiles,  Smile so the world can be a peaceful...

Psych

...before birth, from ultrasounds babies can be seen smiling from inside their mother’s abdomen. It was basically considered a reflection of inner emotions, an infant is happy therefore it smiled (Ozono 2010). Emotions such as smile on the other hand can teach infant positive association attached to a smile that we adults can feel. Learning to smile and what is meant by a smile is a process, just like learning how to walk (Ainsworth 1999). Even though infants smiles, it may seem like they are happy. They probably are, but infants also learn the joy of smile by sharing it with someone else by mimicking their parents or strangers joy when they see an infant. Take for instance when a baby receives a toy as a gift from a parent. An infant would smile upon receiving a toy and would look at the parent with smile. With this anticipatory smile the child will keep smiling as long as the parents keep smiling because they are mimicking what the parents are doing. But if the parents makes a sad face while the baby makes an anticipatory smile, the baby will most likely do the same and make a sad face even though the baby received a toy. Infants are getting aware of their social world. They are learning from the environments around them the reason to smile and what that smile is associated with....

Definition Essay: What Is Happiness?

...A reminder that life is something you should want to live. Every day that you wake up and open your eyes, smile. Smile because you get to enjoy another day that some will not wake up to. A reminder that not everything has to go as planned and it can still be successful. Even if you don’t get the job promotion or the raise, you can still be happy that you have a job in the first place. You can still be happy that you had the opportunity to compete for it. Happiness is a reminder that you don’t need materialistic things to be happy. Happiness is a habit. You have to mentally be happy. This comes with making yourself think you are happy. When something goes wrong or something bad happens tell yourself, “I am happy”, and the happiness will come. You have to prove to yourself that you are happy. You have to emotionally be happy. This happens when you don’t let everything affect you. You can’t let that friend that is mad at you get to you and ruin your day. It all comes with getting into the habit of being happy and finding happiness within your...

...a product that I would purchase it made it even more appealing. What I did also like, other than the actual set up of the ad was the soft description of the product. It made me want to go purchase the product because of natural ingredients that are used in the product. Source Factor: EOS paid for this ad. They are becoming a popular brand and are able to now produce advertisements that reach the consumers. Message Factor: The message the ad is trying to send to the reader is that if they purchase the product they will have beautiful smiles. The lip balms posing as flowers suggest that there is an elegant feel when using the product, also it seems to be giving off a natural feel. The description describes that the ingredients used in the product are natural ingredients which makes the product unique. The way the advertisement is presented it seems as though the brand is trying to send the message that they truly care about the way ones smile looks and that it is done with the correct product. Does the ad flow? I think the ad does flow. The first thing I look at when I saw the ad was the circular lip balms posing as flowers. It gives the ad a natural feeling and that is what they were going for to get the point across that they are going towards the natural route. The description and image flow together...

Sculpture

...could have been used to make the sculpture was the ancient technique called lost wax or cire-perdue. This method consists of the artist making the basic mold by using a wax model. The sculpture is a depiction of a man who is very pleasant and happy. The sculpture is of an older man. Even though the sculpture is small in size the artist does a good job of showing the happiness in the man’s face. The main focal area of the sculpture is the man’s face. While you cannot see the color of his eyes or the color of his hair the smile on his face is very visible. The artist’s main purpose was to show the person that is seeing the sculpture the man’s smile on his face. Even though it is not known why the man depicted in the sculpture is smiling or happy, the artist uses something as simple as a smile to get the attention of people. The artist wanted to show people that the man depicted was a pleasant man to be around. The artist wanted the man’s smile to stand out when someone looks at the sculpture. The sculpture also depicts the man living a simple life. The artist wanted to portray the man as being thankful and happy for the simple things in life, and that the man did not need a lot of material or extravagant things to make him happy. The man is not dressed extravagantly and the artist does not use a lot of detail to the man’s clothing. The sculpture is small in size, so the artist probably intended for it to be a gift...

Philosophy in Life

...humor and a smile is very important. Voltaire once said “Life is a shipwreck but we must not forget to sing in the lifeboat.”This is one of my favorite quotations. Human existence isn’t flawless, but why should we dwell on the imperfections of life when we can smile at the almost faultless. I believe that life is too short to waste on negativity. Being positive means looking out the window at a thunderstorm and saying “This is good, the plant will be watered” or “don’t worry, it will clear up.” I consider myself to be very positive; I always look at the bright side of a bad situation. This is one of the keys to my happiness. If you look up the definition for laugh in a dictionary, it would say “to make sounds from the throat while breathing out in short bursts or gasps as a way of expressing amusement.” Laughter is much more than that. It is like a cure for cancer or an umbrella in the rain. Laughter can shield you from the harmful rays of grief, if exposed to these rays you are at risk of a frown and/or tears. I believe comedians are the true doctors of this world. They give you a free prescription every time you come to there office. Laughter truly is the most effective and side effect free medicine in the world. A smile is one of the only gestures preformed and understood by everybody in the world. Whether you are from India, France, or Germany, you smile in the same language. It is a universal welcome. A smile has the power to make someone’s day, if you smile at someone...

The Benefits of Smiling

...Introduction According to Wikipedia, “a smile is a facial expression formed by flexing those muscles most notably near both ends of the mouth and is customarily an expression denoting pleasure, happiness or amusement.” Smiles according to Eric Jaffe begin in our sensory corridors often caused by little emotional data often felt in pleasant situations like when the ear collects a whispered word, the eyes spot an old friend on the station platform or the hand feels the pressure of another hand (Jaffe 2010). He goes ahead to describe the processes involved in smiling beginning with the emotional data that runs through and excites the left temporal region of the brain, then to the surface of the face where two muscles are roused into action: “The zygomatic major, which resides in the cheek, tugs the lips upward, and the orbicularis oculi, which encircles the eye socket, squeezes the outside corners into the shape of a crow’s foot. The entire event is short, typically lasting from two-thirds of a second to four seconds and those who witness it often respond by mirroring the action, and smiling back.” (Jaffe 2010). What if research were to show that the simple act of smiling at people can effect enormous positive changes in their lives and our lives too, just like Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world,” smiling can positively affect everyone around. In this paper, I would be discussing, first the mimicry and emotional contagion of smiling and will finally...
