A smile is a facial expression formed by flexing the muscles near both ends of the mouth.[1] The smile can also be found around the eyes (See 'Duchenne Smiling' below). Among humans, it is an expression denoting pleasure, joy, happiness, or amusement, but can also be an involuntary expression of anxiety, in which case it is known as a grimace. Smiling is something that is understood by everyone despite culture, race, or religion; it is internationally known. Cross-cultural studies have shown that smiling is a means of communicating emotions throughout the world.[2] But there are large differences between different cultures.[3] A smile can also be spontaneous or artificial.

From a friendly smile to a more romantic smile, there are many different smiles and different ways the act of smiling can be done. “Smiles can communicate feelings as different as love or contempt, pride or submission, flirtatiousness or polite tolerance.”[4] The act of smiling may often be induced by showing kindness. To give someone something to smile about, we might take someone’s mind off their problems by conversing with them, giving them some attention, or even telling them a joke. Next time you want to put a smile on someone’s face, either perform an act of kindness or think of a stress reliever.

“Service with a Smile”---This has always been at the core of American businesses since the beginning of the 1900’s. Research continually proves that this is true; smiling really does increase attractiveness and likability between humans. In fact, people who tend to smile produce what is called the halo effect, which correlates with greater trust, greater financial earnings, and increased interpersonal cooperation.[5] In a time of increased stress due to cutbacks, high debt, and increasing family issues, employees are often required to work with a distressed public. However, a smile tends to convey respect, patience, empathy, hospitality and compassion. For example, when an employee smiles at a stressed customer, and exhibits excellent listening skills, most of the time, there is a report of total customer satisfaction.[6] Research also reports that people receive more help when they smile. Even the smile of a stranger produces more “Good Samaritan” effects on the receiver.[7] When you smile, even memory retrieval of your name is enhanced as is shown in neuroscience research, versus people who have neutral facial expressions.[8]

Broken Smile

...BROKEN SMILE As I walk into the coffee shop’s doorway Just like I would’ve done any other day You looked up and looked away And to cover my pain, I smiles and it hurt I stared at the girl beside you I thought to myself “Wasn’t I good enough” My inner conscience said “He doesn’t want you” I ignored it and when I smiled, it hurt I went to him and asked “why did you leave me?” He snickered and said “You are worth nothing; not even a little penny” I tried to reply back but I failed So once again I smiled and it hurt a lot I woke up and felt darkness, not brightness Put a fake smile on my face And for the millionth time I smiled and it hurt I cried when I remember you say “your smile makes my day” It really pained me when you said “You are worth nothing” Now your words are like knives in my back Slowly becoming deeper and deeper Hurting me more every time you spoke A weight is falling down on me Not letting me, not letting me think I can’t stop trembling and shaking Now I am sure I am breaking Depression is here but this is the last time I try to smile but it hurts So I am done fighting this battle The whole reason of being on this earth is to die My reason for breathing is gone I feel weak, so weak I can’t smile, I can’t cry Now I think “Am I really that worthless” I am afraid to be alone Because I know it will happen I want one thing before But I can’t have that thing, I can’t have him I will never have him So I shut......

How to Smile

...How to Smile John Lennon once said, “Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears.” If his saying was true, most people must be two or three hundred years old according to their face-book pages. However, their life must be miserable since I hardly see anyone smile to a strange on a busy street anymore. Smile and be happy are not just a formal act of friendliness, but it’s also a way to experience life. Although no one can be happy all the time, you can practice convincing yourself to be happy, because after all life is too precious to waste it. As a waiter, customers often asked me, “You smile all the time, how can you be happy every day?” I answer something along the lines like, “You know, life is good!” or “The smell from our food makes me smile.” If a coworker asks then I typically reply, “It’s a tip from years of experience. The longer you serve, the brighter your smile is.” This response makes my coworker thinks that although work is not like Disneyland, it is still possible to put up a smile and lift up the whole atmosphere. Servers are trained to smile all the time because a business owner knows that happiness is transmittable. A happy server makes happy customers, happy customers will come back and even bring a friend with them next time. As a server, I smile not only to fill up my tip jar, but also to lift the spirits of my coworkers. Hence, I can spread my happiness to everyone they interact with for the rest of the night. There......

...that I could get a different experience from both, however the Friends of the Night People was the one that had the most impact on me. Walking in I honestly didnt know what to expect. The other volunteers were very friendly and I immediately felt like this was going to be a good night. They put me on drinks to serve. However, as the night started and people began to pour in for food, clothes, and some warm shelter I was flooded by alot of mixed emotions. I immediately felt a sense of reward for helping those in need. I felt like they needed all of us and it also gave me a flash of what the world is REALLY like out there. The only goal i had while i was there was to keep a smile on my face and try to make people feel welcome. Here were people who have nothing and yet come in with a smile on their face and so appreciative just for the littlest things. While I was serving drinks I tried not to be judgemental and open minded. There were some great moments and also some sad moments. There was a few times where my heart would just break for them. A woman came in beaten up and still smiling and thanking me for being there. Several people came through in worse shape than most and carried everything they owned in just one garbage bag. That was the hardest thing for me to watch. Then there were people that just made my day. Here I am more fortunate than most and people were thanking me, blessing me, and calling me a godsent for helping them. Those were the......

Case Incident Term Paper

...Chapter 4 Case Incident 1 IS IT OKAY TO CRY AT WORK? I. Study/Analysis Study Questions: 1. What factors do you think make some organizations ineffective at managing emotions? Some factors that make some organizations ineffective at managing emotions could managers don’t understand psychology, or the organization does not offer programs such as anger management to employees. Emotions are strong feelings directed at someone or something (Organizational Behavior, page 98). Some managers do not have any experience handling employee’s emotions, or they may not know how to approach any issues dealing with emotions. Understanding emotions is important for organizations and managers to understand, because detecting emotions can lead to creating an effective environment. So I think organizations should offer employees a training session or show a video on how to manage emotions in the workplace, and to have guidelines on how to manage emotions in the organization. Handling emotions in the workplace will create a positive atmosphere, and will improve production in the organization.   2. Do you think the strategic use and display of emotions serve to protect employees, or does covering your true emotions at work lead to more problems than it solves? I think the use of strategic use and display of emotions serve to protect employees for a reason, and that even though you cover your true emotions in certain situations it’s best for the......

...nerd."  I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.  His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.  He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.  My heart went out to him.  So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.  They really should get lives." He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"  There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.  I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.  As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.  He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.  We talked all the way home, and I carried his books.  He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.  I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends.  He said yes. We hung all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him.  Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.  I stopped him and said, "you are gonna really build......

Smile

...The Smile" is set in the future after warfare has destroyed nearly all traces of civilization. Cities have been reduced to junk piles and cornfields glow with radioactivity at night. The survivors of this warfare wear soiled gunnysack clothing. Their homes are caves and other semi-dwellings that can give them even a measure of protection from the icy weather. Their spirits are as cold as the winter weather because they are filled with hatred for the past; the past has caused their present to be miserable and deplorable. In this society where beauty is nonexistent and where only hatred and destruction remain, the young boy Tom stands in a queue, waiting his turn to view "the smile," the Mona Lisa.As each man passes by the portrait, he "appreciates" it by spitting upon it. However, when Tom's turn comes to spit upon the painting, his mouth is dry. All that he can say is "She's beautiful!" The crowd surges forward on Tom, ripping and destroying the portrait. Tom, in blind imitation, also grabs at the canvas and is successful in tearing off a small portion. When he arrives at his silo home later that night, he gently opens the crumpled fragment of canvas that he has held so tightly. There in his hand is her smile. He thinks that it is lovely and holds it close to him as he falls asleep. In a world in which hatred and destruction have taken the place of beauty and peace, there is still hope that these evils can be overcome. "The Smile" characterizes this hope as being yet alive......

...their "American Dream" is. Unfortunately, I do believe that societies overall dream is to be more "economically successful than previous generations in your family." My hope for current and future generation "American Dreamers" is they broaden their meaning of their dream and simplify it at the same time, giving it a one word definition, Happiness. I chose this word because I believe it to be universal through all cultures. It encompasses all the little things each one of us breaks Happiness into. Besides, having practiced being happy while trying to turn every negative moment that happens throughout the day into a positive. It is without a doubt easier to contiue smiling through the negatives to the next positive, than it is to smile, frown, smile,...

Power of Smiling

...states that a simple smile has the power to make things better. Accordingly, he refers to a smile as a superpower. He explains that the act of smiling itself makes you feel better rather than smiling being a result of feeling good. So the purpose of this lecture may have been to encourage one’s ability to smile and be happy even in the hardest of times. Gutman reviews a raft of studies about smiling which reveals some surprising results and discusses how smiling is contagious and beneficial. He starts off his lecture by revealing some logical facts about the hidden power of a smile. For instance, a study which measured smiles of students in a high school yearbook photos to look what the students’ lives were after decades, found that widest smilers were more likely to be in a long-lasting marriage and to have a better sense of personal well-being. Another study found that the span of major league baseball players’ smiles in their photos predicted longevity. Gutman surprises the gathering by revealing that we are actually born smiling as technology shows that babies appear to smile even in the womb. Therefore, it is one of the most basic biological expressions of all humans and we are part of naturally smiling species. Smiling is evolutionary contagious and we have a hidden innate drive to smile when we see one. This occurs even among strangers when we have no intention to connect with the other person. Gutman interacts with the audience by asking if they smile more than......

If, for example, a person is suspected of stealing from the office cash box, he can be cleverly questioned so that he will exhibit the necessary reflectors. Should he be guilty of stealing from the cash box, he is likely to be defensive, with a tendency to scramble for an alibi. If he is innocent, he tends to be offended, and may be aggressive when questioned. Facial expressions Facial expressions often reveal the true emotions of a person. ...Myeongeun?” As soon as she heard his voice, she smiled. “Nothing - I just thought the rain droplets are pretty,” there’s a hint of wanting, begging, in her voice. Taehyung understood what she wanted immediately, and sighed. “You’re asking for the impossible, Myeongeun.” Her heart dropped a little as ‘impossible’ rolled off his tongue. She nod slowly, twice, and gazed at the park which seemed gloomy, as it was drenched. A sigh escaped her small, pouty lips. Taehyung heard her almost inaudible sigh and kissed her left shoulder a few times, trying to distract her from whatever she was thinking about at the moment. His arms circled her waist before bringing her body close to his. Her back touched his chest, the contact made Myeongeun smile a little. “Taehyung…” Taehyung simply put his chin on her shoulder. “Do you want pasta for dinner? I found a new recipe for the carbonara sauce, thought we could give it a try,” Myeongeun tilted her head and laid it over her fiancé’s. “Don’t you think it’s a little early for dinner, love?” She emitted a soft chuckle. He tensed for a second at ‘love’. He didn’t think he could ever get used to this nickname. Taehyung released his arms and stepped back. Myeongeun felt the warmth fading suddenly therefore she looked back. She had seen Taehyung’s eyes with this particular expression before, knowing what was happening, she looked down. “Sorry,” she muttered. “It’s not your fault,” Taehyung said, trying to sound reassuring,......

The physical appearance most observed was walking with heads down while using their devices. Verbally, most persons who had obstructed or almost obstructed others apologized for doing so while continuing about their business. Demonstrative Communication

...vital to daily life and practicing effective communication will ensure the proper message is sent and received. Facial expressions are the most common form of demonstrative communication. Nayad 2011, “Research estimates that body language, including facial expressions, account for 55 percent of all communication” (Physical Nonverbal Communication, p. 1). A positive facial expression example is as simple genuine smile of happiness. Of course interpreting variances of the smile can be positive and even negative dependent upon interpretation. For example, the interpretation of a grin can be seen as a sign of arrogance dependent on the connotation and is an example of a negative facial expression. Another example of a negative facial expression is the ever popular frown displaying sadness or disappointment. Effective use of demonstrative communication is extremely important in delivering a message properly. Specifically, if presenting a business brief to a corporate body an effective facial expression would definitely be of a serious nature, devoid of smiles, grins, and frowns. Polar opposite in this scenario would be displaying a look of...
