...The Smoking Ban Debate Smoking, a hot button issue that has gained momentum is on the verge of exploding. Smoking bans are the current answer to the growing backlash from the general public over second hand smoke, a controversial action which brings the subject of individual rights to the forefront. Tobacco use has been debated for hundreds of years, with the medical field describing tobacco use as a “deadly narcotic” as early as 1853. With momentum gaining a pinnacle, regulations implementing and enforcing smoking bans are widespread, with oppositions position that these bans impose on individual rights. David Hudson wrote “The Department of Justice once stated smoking as the single leading cause of death in the United States”. Key issues surround the debate that revolve around individual choice, social responsibility, and governmental power, and with the issues bring a wide variety of interests. A 2000 lawsuit Supreme Court ruled the Food and Drug Administration was not allowed to regulate tobacco as a drug. ...Smoking Advertisements and Commercials For this assignment, I will be writing about anti-smoking advertisements and commercials that I see a lot on television while I am trying to watch the Big Bang Theory and sometimes banners on an Internet page. Lately, I have been noticing a lot of anti-smoking commercials from the CDC interviewing people whom have been smoking for a long time. People, whom are being interviewed, have serious health problems due to the effects of smoking. These ads will explain how the ex-smokers live their life’s differently because of the damage from smoking. Terrie Hall was the most well known person in these CDC commercials. Terrie started smoking when she was in high school, and now she is facing the consequences for doing it for so long. Terrie was working with the CDC to show not only to teens but also to adults what smoking did to her. Terrie’s condition with cancer was getting worst and she requested the CDC to interview her while on her deathbed to show that smoking took her life away. Terrie Hall died in September of last year. It has been said that the last commercial of Terrie made a big impact to society because the emotion appeal it delivered to the audience. The emotional appeal was evoking negative emotions like fear, guilt, sadness, and anger towards smoking. The audience might develop the fear of smoking, knowing what kind of damage it can do to someone’s body. Audiences might build up the emotion guilt for the current smokers. Audience...

Health Education Plan

...Although smoking rates have gone down over the last few years, there is still a need for education related to smoking and smoking cessation. In the Windshield Survey, it was stated that due to local and state regulations, smoking in public places is illegal and since these laws have been in force, smoking rates in the area have dropped. “New survey results show Washington’s adult smoking rate has dropped to a new low of 14.8 percent. That’s down from 15.3 percent the previous year. Washington now has the third lowest smoking rate in the nation—the state’s best ranking since measuring across all 50 states started in 1995  (Washington State Department of Health, 2010).” Even with the lower rate, there is still a need for more education, especially among the lower income group. According to the Washington State Department of Health (2010) website, “The smoking rates among people from low income or with lower educational backgrounds remain high at 29 and 27 percent, respectively. While people with lower incomes try to quit as often as people with higher incomes, they are less successful.” My subject family has a mother and father who are chain smokers and two teenage children who are suffering from the effects of second hand smoke. The oldest child is also experimenting with cigarette smoking when at friends’ homes and before/after school, unbeknownst to her parents. According to U.S. department of Health and Human Services (2011), “850 young people age 12 to 17 began smoking on a daily...
