In the stories, The Sniper, and The Scarlet Ibis, the protagonists have odd relationships with their brothers. In the first story, The Sniper, the protagonist is fighting another sniper and kills him and then finds out it was his brother. The protagonist and his brother are both snipers on opposite sides of the Irish civil war. They don't see each other until the protagonist kills the other. The other story, The Scarlet Ibis, is about a boy who's younger brother is very weak, and the older brother has to do everything with him. The younger brother, Doodle, is born very weak and can barely do anything at first. The older brother ends up doing everything with and for Doodle, and then teaches him to walk and other things.
