Getting Lost In the Mountains

When most people think of the word lost they believe it represents misdirection or confusion; however, I envision this term as an opportunity to escape from reality and the stress of everyday life. I could not think of a better feeling than the snow-filled air blowing on your face as you speed down the side of a mountain on a snowboard going faster and faster until the world around you becomes a blur whizzing by. I still get as excited as the first time I stepped on a snowboard in Breckenridge, Colorado. My mother told me the first time we went even though it was supposed to be a family trip she never saw me until the sun set and it was time to retire home. For instance, when my mother, my sister and I arrived the first day we rode the same ski lift up, but as soon as I snapped my boots on my board and before my mother could yell at me to wait I was already gone. As I grew older in Colorado Springs, Colorado I was presented with a few more challenges, such as getting my license. It took a great deal of effort to convince my mother that I would not kill myself driving on the highway to Breckenridge for the weekend to go snowboarding and the Colorado weather provided a great snowboarding season seven months out of the year. This snow-covered Mecca has given me a place to think about family, friends, and other life changing events like which college I decided to attend. Now, when I feel troubled or trapped I close my eyes and visualize those huge trees blanketed by a white powder, and the wind whipping in and out of the gaps between the trees.
This sport has always helped me escape from the trials of everyday life and provided me with a place to think when I needed to. Even if the price of lift tickets are too steep I can walk up somewhere in the backwoods and ride back down whenever I want. Not only

Snowboard History

...asked us who we were. We all exchanged names and from that night on we started meeting more and more people and becoming more of a part of what was going on at Boston Mills-Brandywine. We were a part of a community, a community that knows no bounds as to color or age or race. We were all just snowboarders here. The origins of snowboarding go back to 1964. A surf fanatic named Sherman Poppen was wanting to surf the magic landscape of the rockies. As a result he created the first surfboard for the snow. The first product was a 20 m long plastic plank. This as you can imagine was a rough place to start for snowboarding. They called it “snurfing” as in snow surfing. This only lasted a short while, in 1970 a man named Milovich started making snowboards in the design of short surfboards and added metal edges for better carving. Carving is where your turn on your edges and perform small or...

Tom Sims

...or not there would be snowboarding or even skiing. He is the godfather of snowboarding and aggressive downhill skiing. The way he thought of it is when he couldn’t skate in New Jersey in the winter and that frustrated him. So he invented a ski board, which is a snowboard just with a different name. So that winter he had something to use in the winter and then it just hit. He had owned his own skateboarding shop for a while after he got out of school, and Tony Hawk road for his skateboards, but then he wanted to add his invention in 7th grade to his production list. So he tried to get them on their in the late 1970’s but he didn’t have enough money for it so he had to put it off for awhile, but he didn’t tell anyone about it. Because he wanted it to be a surprise. So then in the early 1980’s he put them on his production line and they called “Sims Snowboards”. It was basically a huge hit when he produced them. People loved it, it was Americas next big thing. After the snowboards came along in the mid 1980’s Tom Sims decided he wanted to spice things up with them. So what he did was wanted to make jumps so u could get big air just like if you where on skateboard, so he thought why not be able to do that on a snowboard. So he made some big jumps for them and landing ramps for them. Then when he got ambitious he wanted to make a ramp where you could go back and forth on, he called it a half pipe. That is what made the sport take off because you had jumps, ramps, and which allowed...

Snowboarding

...snowboarding started a long time ago in 1965, by Sherman Poppen, when he was watching his daughter slide in the snow. Sherman invented the board by putting together two skis and a rope so his daughter would be able to give the board some direction. His wife named the board “snurfer” by putting together two words snow and surf. Later in 1977 Jake Burton decided to make some improvements to the board. He tried different materials. Until getting to the board that looks like the ones we have now. Later this sport was introduced in the Olympic Games. Then it started to become more popular. It was fall of 2008 when I came to Utah. The winter was coming. I was excited to go to try snowboarding. I was watching videos on the internet to learn how to snowboard. November is when the ski resorts usually open and they close around May or April, depending on the weather. I finally got to try it. The day was beautiful; the sun was up, the sky was blue, and no wind blowing. My friends and I, got on the gondolas and started going up. The view was beautiful. We (myself, Carlos and James) went all the way to the top of the mountains, and started going down. I had a...

Argumentative Essay: Snowboarding In Powder

...Snowboarding has been a hobby of mine since seventh grade. On the mountain is a place where I feel free, especially on a powder day. Every day after the mountain closes, they groom the trails for the next day. Sometimes it snows overnight and this creates a powder day because the accumulating snow goes over the groomed trails. I've ridden powder two times since I have been snowboarding, and both times happened to be in Winter Park, Colorado. What I Already Know Not many people in my family snowboard, just my uncle Mike and my step mom’s sister Jamie....

...I started snowboarding in 2008 and would love to give others the same experience I’ve had or something close to it. Until 2008 I had only been on a snowboard once before in my life and that was in 2006, indoors on manmade snow in Dubai, an experience that both terrified and elated me all at the same time. It wasn’t until 2008 and the epic snow storm that blanketed most of the nation that I decided to give it another go. Of course I had a few friends who were goading me into trying it, as I normally made fun of snowboarding or any other snow sports for that matter. I used to think it was too expensive, dangerous, and a waste of time. Why would I go out in the cold on purpose? Why would I pay to strap a sled to my feet and do crazy things? All of these questions and more went through my head while I was driving a group of Aussie friends up to Cypress Mountain in Vancouver, BC where I was planning to go snowshoeing and take photos. When we arrived at the mountain the sky started dumping snow, something it wasn’t’ doing when we started off from the city. It would make for a good snowshoeing experience, but would limit the photo opportunities. So, with that I decided to cave into the peer pressure I was feeling and give snowboarding another try. Keep in mind that only other time I had been strapped to a snowboard was in the United Arab Emirates on fake snow in August in the middle of the desert. The gear was smelly and sweaty from hundreds of other users, but it seemed...

Snowboarding is a dangerous sport, and not enough people view it as such. Precautions should be taken at all times while snowboarding. New snowboarders should be prepped in what to do when they fall instead of trying to catch themselves, which only increases the chance of breaking an arm. New people trying to brave the world of snowboarding should at least take one lesson before starting, just to know how to snowboard and keep themselves safe. There should be some way to enforce the rule of wearing protective gear while snowboarding. This includes Cash and Cash Equivalent increasing by $138,171. This shows there was an increase in Sales and some Accounts Receivable being collected. Bankers are interested in this account as it shows them how the company is doing in Sales. Short Term Investments increased by $30,000, which tells me that Custom Snowboards needed to take out a small loan to cover purchasing materials to manufacture the snowboards or to cover other expenses. Bankers need to know how much money, whether it is Short Term or Long Term loans, a company takes out for the business. Accounts Receivable increased by $483 dollars. This could be due to either a slight increase in Sales, collections on Accounts Receivable (A/R would be higher if there were not any collections), or both. ...brand with my target objective, success is assured to follow, insuring a collection of accomplishments. When I was roughly nine I was commonly asked the question of, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” No matter the situation or circumstances, I answered this question with the response of, “I am going to go to the N.B.A.” I was born with a basketball in my hands and have been playing and watching since diapers. This question was always obvious to me, until about the age of 14, when I eventually concluded my fantasy of going to the N.B.A. was a delusion. Since then, I have perpetually transitioned to a distinctively newer answer to this question. I respond to this inquiry now with the statement, “I intent on managing a considerable snowboard business such as Burton.” As people age into becoming an adult, a personal brand is created that represents you, and for most changes throughout stages of growth. My personal brand took a slight change recently, when enrolling into college, with developing a more serious and focused outlook on school, in relation to my work and studies, knowing these traits would be a necessity to manage.
