Rae heard a soft chiming sound and a somewhat familiar voice. “Correct, you cannot, however, I can try.” As Rae turned she saw Meg and her partner standing in the doorway with a nice looking man behind them. Meg spoke as she walked over to Will. “I found Keegan Onóra dying on the battlefields, in the Highlands back in the 1800’s I believed it a waste of a beautiful man, I cried over his body and discovered that my tears have healing power, and I inadvertently gave him immortality. Now remember he is the only one that I have saved, therefore I don’t promise it can be done it again. He has wanted Will since the day River discovered you Rae. I told him it could not be, however under the circumstances, there is no reason not to try. She has met her fate in an unhuman fashion, and should be given another chance. Sorry for Disturbing You

...Sorry for Disturbing You “Sorry for Disturbing You” is a short story from 2008 written by Richard Knight. The main theme of the short story is regret and the story basically focuses on the regret of choices one makes in life. The story revolves around the protagonist Ian Harter and is told by a third person limited narrator, as only Ian’s thoughts appear in the story. Ian is our eyes throughout the story and all feelings and descriptions are from his point of view, which forces the reader to have certain impressions of the other characters. The story begins in medias res with Ian opening the door to his house finding an old alcoholic man standing on his doorstep. Ian reluctantly lets the man, Michael Phelps, into his house where Ian is alone with his daughter, Corinne, while his wife, Karen, is “staying at her mother’s for a while” (p. 2, l. 31). After asking the stranger a few questions including offering him a glass of water, Ian talks him into calling a taxi. While waiting for the taxi to arrive, Ian sees his chance to question Michael and it is revealed that Michael was associated with the former owners of Ian’s house. Ian also learns rather tragic information about Michael’s past with his family, when Michael tells Ian about his family’s rejection. When the taxi driver finally arrives and sees who his passenger is, he refuses to drive Michael. Back inside the house, Ian offers to follow Michael to his flat and therefore calls his wife to make her watch their daughter...

Imagery In Sarah Ellis 'The Tunnel'

...Everything and anything that people do and read can have an impact on them. Short stories generally do not have a very long time to make an extraordinary first impression on the readers. Sarah Ellis brings flavour and depth to her story The Tunnel by grabbing the attention of the readers. Authors often use literary devices to enhance their short story. First writers use imagery to make the reader’s visualize images in their minds. Secondly they use irony to emphasize a central idea about the story. Case Study of Gigantic University and Minor States Teachers College

...that support your conclusions. Case study 1 Members of Students for Fair Tuition (SFT) decide to protest rising tuition costs at Gigantic State University (GSU) by taking over Dunfee Hall, the location of GSU president Dalton Chandler’s office. As they storm into the reception area of Chandler’s office suite, shouting “Down with fascist tuition increases,” Chandler’s faithful secretary, Prudence Pimply, picks up a phone to call the campus police. Steve Steel, radical leader of the SFT, slaps the phone knocking it from Prudence’s hand without ever touching her. He then pulls out an amazing lifelike squirt gun and threatens to blow Prudence’s head off if she so much as moves an inch toward the phone or the door. Prudence collapses in a sobbing heap on her desk. Unfortunately for their purposes, the students find the only door to Chandler’s third floor office locked from the inside. After a few feeble attempts to break it down, they contend with barricading his door with filing cabinets and singing “We Will Overcome” until the police arrive shortly thereafter. The total time elapsed from the moment the students entered the building until the police arrive is ten minutes. President Chandler was taking a nap and slept through the entire incident. Prudence was so upset that she couldn’t return to work for a week, and then only managed to do so under heavy doses of tranquilizers prescribed by her doctor, Morton Mallard. This young woman has a moment in time where she is free from her husband and appears to become a renewed person for a brief time. As the story progresses, Mathilde has a crisis because she has nothing nice to wear to the ball, but since it was her time to shine, her thoughtful husband gave her all the money he had saved; thus, the only thing left to do was wear a fine piece of jewelry for that evening (a diamond necklace borrowed from Madame Forestier). Reflective Essay-Personal Narrative

...Despite these struggles, I made it into the Advanced English class sophomore year, Advanced Placement Language junior year, and Advanced Placement Literature my senior year. Going into senior year, I had made impressive grades and had a few of my pieces published in school newspapers. Needless to say, I was feeling confident as ever. Unfortunately, I wrote my first literary analysis paper and I got a C. I was shocked at first, mostly because I had never gotten a C on anything in my entire life—except almost in phys ed one time, which my mother never lets me forget. Anyways, at that point I was, to say the least, pissed. The next class, I met with Mr. Krill and in a nutshell, he told me I wasn’t a strong writer. Ouch. Long story short, after I was done sobbing in the ladies room, I realized that this was my opportunity to prove him wrong. So, I typed my little fingers off and picked up a few grammatical textbooks along the way. Every essay my grades got a little better, maybe he was going easy on me but I’ll never know. Concluding the year, I had to do my senior research paper, which I chose the topic of “The Brain in Love.” Precisely 15 pages later, I passed in my paper and earned an A. I honestly don’t know who was more surprised, him or me—or my mom. Regardless, I proved that I was capable of producing great pieces of writing. When I contemplate Me as a Writer, the first word that comes to mind is challenging. To some, that would register as a bad thing but to me, it’s the...

She is today a currently professor of Creative writing at the MIT. **In Games at twilight, we can find various themes such as family solidarity, individualism, social class, modernity, tradition. The characters portrayed are differents, we have children (Games at twilight), artists (Sale), women, employees or introverts, but the way she uses irony, satire and humour add a new dimension to her short stories. **Subject: Compare two or three short stories from the collection Games at Twilight Games at Twilight contains 11 short stories but I decided to compare 3 of the short stories which are A Devoted Son, Pigeons at Daybreak and Pineapple Cake. Pineapple Cake it is about the life of a mother realising the extent of her fall from social grace that becomes her preoccupation as she attends a wedding,in Pigeons at Daybreak,it is about the daily routine and the complex relationship of an old married couple and A Devoted Son is about a son who succeeded in life and devoted himself to his father who became ill. **These three short stories seem to be very differents from one other but by going deeper into them we can find some similarities which are explored, described in different ways.It is not possible to divide in two parts such as in first part we will see the common points...

The essay argues against the typical ideologies of racial segregation. Hurston states that she “do[es] not belong to the sobbing school of Negrohood” (“How It Feels…”, 1-2) that requires her to internalize past and present injustices faced by African Americans. Hurston later published another article in 1950 titled “What White Publishers Won’t Print”, where she addresses the lack of interest in society about the lives, emotions, and culture of African Americans. White people find their interest sparked by...

The Tv

... You stay home one day, watching some television, and discover that life is just in front of you. You see the same person over and over again in different TV-shows, and realise it could be you. Maybe life isn’t so bad and routine marked after all. The story The TV is written by Ben Loory and published in the newspaper The New Yorker in April 2010. The story is about a man that stays home from work one day, because he is sick, and like most of us would do when we are sick, he lays on the couch all day and watches television. When suddenly he finds a show he wants to watch, and he wonders. The main character seems so familiar, and the show is so long. Afterwards he takes a shower, and realises, the show was about him, he was the main character. The story starts in medias res, which is a common characteristic for short stories. An omniscient third-person narrator tells the story. “In the morning, the man awakens confused… He feels as if he were forgetting something..” P. 2, l 47, the narrator knows how our main character thinks and feels, which works really well because, the main character has so many different thoughts and feelings about seeing him self in the television, so it makes it easier to understand the story. The name on our main character is not stated, and somehow it doesn’t seem accidently. The man sees him self in a lot of different TV shows, his looks are the same, and also with no name. He is kind of like an “everyman”, meaning that he isn’t comfortable...

Winesburg, Ohio

...Vagueness of Words: The Plight of the “Grotesque” Winesburg, Ohio, a short story cycle written by the American author Sherwood Anderson depicts a rather interesting portrait of an American Midwestern small town at the beginning of the twentieth century. Within this citizenry, Anderson draws attention to the distortion of each character in the book as a result of norms and traditions that led them into becoming “grotesques” as described in the prologue (The Book of the Grotesque). Among the exemplary stories written by Anderson, “Hands” and “Mother” are great at fulfilling the intention to reveal the inability of words to capture, express and explain the kinds of truth in life - underlying the main problem within human society. In “Hands”, Anderson begins by describing explicitly Wing Biddlebaum as “a fat little old man”, which clearly captured the essence of being a grotesque. Grotesque as defined by the Oxford Dictionaries (2013) means that the object is odd and unnatural in shape, appearance or character. His grotesqueness is then amplified by the illustration of a group of youths and maidens coming home from work and one of the girls bully him by sarcastically commenting on his hair even though he was bald (9). His unconscious gesture of nervously fiddling his bare white forehead as mentioned by Anderson just shows how absurd he was in the eyes of society. This action in the beginning of the story proves that Wing Biddlebaum is an outlier, someone who is “forever frightened...
