"The Trouble With Aid" Please respond to the following:
Based on the lecture and Webtext materials, address the following:

* Identify the most significant problems with the way foreign aid is presently dispensed by international lending institutions. Then, discuss at least three recommendations you would make to remedy this situation so that food, medical, and financial assistance actually reaches the poor.

The most significant problems with the way foreign aid is presently dispensed by international lending institutions is that it does not truly focus on how to really stop corruption and wasteful spending. It also hurt the countries that are in need because of their trade policies. What some countries require as it relates to importing and exporting goods usually ends up hurting the country receiving the aid because they can’t produce a product and sell it to make money because of the agreement they have made with the country that they are receiving foreign aid from. The current system is flawed and broken because there are not any checks and balances in place to make sure the people who are in need of help is getting the help they need.
Here are some ideas that could help countries that are really in need of foreign aid: 1. All countries that receive foreign aid must be willing to be watched closely to make sure those who need the aid is getting the help they need. Similar to the processes we have here in the United States. We have a Human Services department that insures that those who need help can get it. It is not perfect but it can help insure that the people needs are being meet. 2. Countries who have promised to give aid to help must follow through with their commitment unless the country that is receiving the help is not following the guidelines that are required to receive help. ...SOC 300 Week 5 Discussion 08/04/2014 "Education" Please respond to the following: * Based on the lecture and Webtext materials, address the following: * Thus far, we have learned that obtaining an education does not appear to be a high priority in the developing world. Suggest at least two (2) reasons why education should be a priority in the developing world. Next, propose significant overall strategies - aside from building more schools - which those in leadership positions in developing countries may use in order to help their people escape poverty through education. The two (2) reasons I believe why education should be a priority are: It will increase the chances that educated citizens will take care of their families in the future. The more educated they become the better future their family will have and improving their quality of life. Education reduces poverty. Education also promotes health. Women with a secondary education are far likely to be aware of the measures for preventing spreading HIV to other and their unborn children. They will also have healthier children decreasing the infant mortality rates. They will also increase their own life span by at least 30 to 40 more years, I propose that developing countries who require aid must use more than half of the aid for education, healthcare and job training. If the countries that requesting the aid does not comply, they forfeit the opportunity to receive the aid for countries who are willing to...

Democracy and Development

...Democracy and Development Democracy and Development By: Sanders (SB) Collins Week 2 First Essay Assignment Professor: Don Anderson Strayer University SOC 300 The Challenge of Third World Development July 12, 2013 By discussing the relationship between democracy and economic development in this assignment we will attempt to compare the ways Howard Handleman, Ronald Inglehart and Christian Welzel all define the prerequisites argued or implied that are necessary for a working democracy. Is the emphasis centered on economics, cultural values, political values, or a combination of all three? Each author has their own perspective on the subject and we begin with a brief synopsis of each to better clarify our discussions. Howard Handleman spent much of his career with the International News Service and U.S. News and World Report as a correspondent and editor. In his text in Chapter 2, Handleman focuses on the political shifts that have taken place in much of the Third World. Governmental authoritarian regimes have fallen due to the call for democracy and freedom in many of the more than 150 countries that together make up the Third World. Probably the most notable example of this type of regime to collapse would be the end of the Cold War. After the Russian fall of power and the resulting loss of both economic and military support from the USSR many of its allies fell from grace and the call for democracy began to become more...

...The current issue and full text archive of this journal is available at www.emeraldinsight.com/1355-5855.htm Hedonic shopping motivations, supermarket attributes, and shopper loyalty in transitional markets Evidence from Vietnam Trang T.M. Nguyen Hedonic shopping motivations 227 Received February 2006 Revised July 2006 Accepted August 2006 Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Tho D. Nguyen and Nigel J. Barrett School of Marketing, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia Abstract Purpose – This study aims to explore the impact of hedonic shopping motivations (HSM) and supermarket attributes (SMA) on shopper loyalty (SLO). Design/methodology/approach – A sample of 608 supermarket shoppers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam was surveyed to test the model. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. Findings – It was found that SMA and HSM had positive effects on SLO. It was also found that the impact of hedonic motivations on SLO was different between the younger and older, as well as lower and higher income groups of customers. However, no such difference was found between female and male shoppers. Research limitations/implications – A major limitation of this study was the use of a sample drawn from one transitional market. Cross-national samples will be a direction for further research. Also, the study focuses on attitudinal loyalty. Behavioral loyalty should be taken into account in future research. Practical...

...Michael Smith Assignment 1: The Effects of War and Peace on Foreign Aid SOC 300 Professor Frederick October 11, 2015 Assess the positive and negative effects that peace and war, respectively, have on the distribution of foreign aid in the developing country that you have selected. Support your response with concrete examples of each of the results that you have cited. The country that I selected is Ukraine. It seems that within this country, peace and war live side by side. This coexistence of peace and war inside Ukraine, coupled with the untreated psychological trauma many soldiers suffer in combat, leaves many veterans and returning troops feeling out of place and unable to reintegrate into the lives they left behind (Peterson, 2015). The negative effects of peace and war going side by side is how the situation affects all those in the area. Being in a situation like this isn’t good for all those in Ukraine. Being in a situation like this can cause trauma for years to come and could possibly start a trickle-down effect for other generations. Ukraine is currently going through a struggle and it seems that the people of lower standards are taking advantage of it. From what I read, it seems that this country has been through a lot of tough times and it doesn’t seem to be getting any easier. Jeltoe, a village with a few dozen homes, has been split in two by the conflict in east Ukraine, which has raged for a year and cost more than 8,000 lives (Vitkine, 2015). The northern...

Lipoic Acid

...Lipoic acid, or more technically alpha-lipoic acid, is an increasingly recognized dietary supplement that has demonstrated a variety of beneficial effects. Lipoic acid occurs naturally in small amounts in the body where it is involved in a variety of processes but is primarily important in aerobic metabolism and various enzymatic actions. Lipoic acid is known to be involved in the energy-producing processes in cells. Lipoic acid is found in many foods, including liver, kidney, and heart meat and in broccoli, spinach, beets, yeast, yams, carrots, and potatoes. Scientists discovered lipoic acid in the 1950s, but the importance of this compound and its critical role as an antioxidant in the body was not defined until 1988. Lipoic acid is readily converted in the body to another compound called dihydrolipoic acid. Dihydrolipoic acid, or R-Dihydrolipoic acid, is the reduced form of lipoic acid that has more immediate effects than lipoic acid and has even more significant antioxidant effects than lipoic acid. Both of these antioxidants are particularly effective in destroying free radicals known as peroxynitrite radicals. These damaging compounds contain both oxygen and nitrogen and have been implicated in the development of chronic inflammation, nervous system diseases, pulmonary diseases, and arteriosclerosis. Lipoic acid acts as an antioxidant in the body and has been shown to have protective effects against nerve damage in diabetics, among other beneficial effects. Lipoic acid...

...effect of poultry manure (PM), NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer and NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer + poultry manure on the growth and yield of tomato. Seven treatments were applied to the soil: 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 t ha-1 poultry manure , 300 kg ha-1 NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer and 150 kg ha-1 NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer + 10 t ha-1 poultry manure. These were laid out in a randomized complete block design and replicated three times. The treatments were compared on the basis of their effect on soil chemical properties, leaf nutrient content, growth and yield of tomato. All levels of poultry manure and NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer + poultry manure increased leaf N, P, K, Ca and Mg levels. The soil chemical properties except pH increased with amount of poultry manure. NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer alone did not increase the soil and leaf Ca and Mg. All levels of poultry manure, NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer alone and NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer + poultry manure increased the number of leaves, plant height, leaf area, number of fruits and fruit weight significantly. Among poultry manure levels, 30 t ha-1 poultry manure gave the highest fruit yield. Among the seven treatments, NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer + poultry manure gave the highest yield. On an average over the two years, 10, 20, 30, 40 t ha-1 poultry manure, 300 kg ha-1 NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer alone...
