Trends in American Popular Culture

In the past decade there have been many new social because of technology. As technology advanced and old technology became more common, more people were able to stay in touch. In the early 1990s’ few people had pagers and cell phones. Today pagers are obsolete and it is not uncommon for a child to have a cell phone. People stay in touch by telephone, text message, e-mail , and social networking websites. One can pay bills online, communicate online, and even meet new people without ever leaving home. With all of the connectivity available, fewer tasks require a person’s physical presence.
In the political arena it seems that not much has changed. Democrats and Republicans continue to support their own parties mostly. The only thing changing is the new issues that the two parties disagree about. The most current issues are health and global warming. Both parties agree that the country’s current healthcare system needs reform but they disagree about how it should be done. Democrats and Republicans also disagree about global warming. Most Democrats believe that the earth is because of manmade pollution. The majority of Republicans believe that the warming of the earth is not caused by man. One trend that stays throughout the years is that these two parties always have something to disagree about. The trend that I recently bought in to was purchasing a big high definition television. For years I have watched television on smaller televisions in standard definition. It never bothered me until I started noticing how many of the people I knew had them. I started paying more attention to the television aisle in Best Buy and Target. It was not long before I could not resist purchasing one for my family. Before I had a high definition television of my own I would not even notice that a television program was in standard definition but now I would notice immediately and it would seem like it would not be enough . One current religious trend would concern the growth rate of a religion called Wicca. Wicca is more commonly known as Witchcraft. Followers of Wicca went from 8,000 in 1990 to 134,000 in 2001 (Bocamp, 2002). Every 30 months the members of the Wiccan faith have doubled. Conversely, the religion that dominates the United States is declining. Currently 76.5% of Americans identify themselves as Christian but in 1990 86.2% did (Bocamp, 2002).

Soc105 Hunger Games

...The Hunger Games is a tale of what humans could possibly become in the future, if they failed to learn from their past history, choosing instead, to repeat it. There is a reinforcement of a culture of the Roman Empire, in particular, the Roman Gladiators. Being a Roman Gladiator is almost comparable to being a professional football sport player of today, in the sense that it was a sport of competition, as are the adolescents in the Hunger Games. In this futuristic science fiction book, young “gladiators”, or tributes, are volunteered to fight to the death representing their district, as did the Roman Gladiators from our history. Just as each tribute, gladiators were volunteered, or forced to fight and live that lifestyle until death. Each tribute, was volunteered to go and fight to the death; this reliving of a culture from hundreds of years shows the connection between the story Hunger Games, and the culture of the Roman Empire. In the story, there are 12 districts in the totalitarian government that once was the United States, of which two youths, otherwise known as a tribute, fight as gladiators once did until there is only one victor. This totalitarian regime has a strong resemblance to “The Myth of Theseus”, who was the son of both Aegeus, king of Athens, and of the god Poseidan, who both slept with his mother in the same night. The king of Crete, after defeating the Athenians in war, demanded that the Athenians send an annual tribute of seven of their handsomest...

Popular American Culture

...Popular American Culture Eleonora Gars SOC105/WH11ELC01 January 18, 2010 Byron Williams Popular American Culture Culture is the essential character of a society that distinguishes if from other societal groups. The underlying elements of every culture are the values, language, myths, customs, rituals, and laws that shape the behavior of the people, as well as the material artifacts, or products, of that behavior as they are transmitted from one generation to the next. Cultural values and influences are the ocean in which individuals swim, and yet most are completely unaware that it is where. What people eat, how they dress, what they think and feel, and what language they speak, are all dimensions of culture. For some cultural critics working with in the mass culture paradigm, mass culture is not just an imposed and impoverished culture, it is clear identifiable sense an imported American culture. “If popular culture in its modern from invented in any one place, it was….. in the great cities of the United States, and above all in New York. (Maltby, 1989)” This claim that popular culture is American culture has a long history within the theoretical mapping of popular cultures. It operates under the term Americanization. In its most basic form cultural imperialism comprises the assumption that one nation deliberately attempts to impose its culture, ideology, goods, and way of life on another country. In the United States, critics of cultural imperialism...

Technology and Online Communities

...Technology and Online Communities Jayne Fortney SOC105 April 29, 2013 Jeffrey Gomm Technology and Online Communities In 2011, 47 percent of all American adults used a social networking site such as Facebook or Twitter. As of 2012 the user count for Facebook was one billion people and for Twitter was 500 million people (Are Social Networking Sites Good for our Society?, 2013). These sites are used by simply creating a personalized profile for yourself. By using the tools provided by that profile you can connect with friends, family, and business associates; as well as share your thoughts, pictures, music or links with the world. It gives you the opportunity to meet people from across the globe who also shares in the same interests as you. Facebook is the largest social media site with one out of seven people having a profile and only 16 percent of users are in the original age range of 18 to 22 with 50 percent of users over the age of 36 (Are Social Networking Sites Good for our Society?, 2013). Social media sites have become so entwined into the lives of people across the globe that so many have come to rely wholly upon them. With such a reliance on social media sites there is a difficulty to foresee what might happen when they don’t exist anymore. If you were to ask twenty different people what would happen if social networking sites disappeared tomorrow, you would get twenty different answers ranging from a complete collapse of humanity to not much change at all...
