Through SOCL 3100, I completed a civic apprenticeship with Otterbein University’s NEW Office of Social Justice and Activism. With the director of the OSJA (Office of Social Justice and Activism), we worked together to design a program to replace their Tunnel of Oppression that they could no longer hold. Together, we created a weeklong event consisting of five different presentations focusing on different subjects. Our event was, Social Justice Week. My responsibility was to think about different subjects we could cover, and find different departments or speakers we could get to present and reach out to them. The topics we covered were Gender Diversity, Poverty and Class, Being an Ally, and Social Justice for the Deaf. We had the Women's, Gender …show more content…
Proactive in bringing the availability of resources to the attention of others.” I believe my Social Justice Week accomplished this in two ways. First, I had to find resources on Otterbein’s campus that were willing to speak on these subjects. The second way was each presenter represented different resources on campus that students can utilize. For example, on Monday with Gender Diversity 101, the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Resource Center was able to promote their services on campus. The other Community Engagement Learning Outcome I believe my event falls under is Multi-Literate, which “Examines community issues using multiple perspectives (economic, political, historical, ethical, etc.) and applies perspectives to a specific project.” On the second day, we focused on Poverty and Class and had three different speakers. We had Otterbein’s Promise House that is the campus food pantry, Zach Reat who worked for Ohio Mid Food Bank and Barb McKenzie who has studied poverty and senior living. We had three different perspectives and worked together to bring their subjects to light. I believe that I grew in this experience because I was able to learn how to organize a huge campus wide event, and more about each of the different subjects. I did not know that there was a big movement in social justice for the deaf, and I was very fortunate that we had them present and I learned so much on the

...PERSONAL REFLECTION JOURNAL BACC7161/4135 The goal of teaching a course that pertains to values, ethics, social justice can be realized by getting students to reflect on who they are, what theirr values happen to be, and how they compare with the values of business and accounting professions. One can learn about rules and regulations but acting according to them or even challenging them at times depends on your personality and intellect. This is the reason for including this assignment as a part of the course requirements. This assignment is driven by a desire to make students be more reflective, about the material taught in the course and about themselves. As described by a wise person: an unexamined life is not likely to be worthwhile! Since accounting is not so much about counting as it is about accountability, it is important to not limit it to just the “generally accepted accounting principles,” but also to understand how those principles are implemented and how they impact global commerce as well as human lives for better or worse. This part of the course is largely modeled on a model used at St Thomas University in St, Paul, MN. They in turn have relied on other traditions such as Jesuit Examen that seek to use self-reflection as a major instrument in the development of one’s person and identity. I am also uploading an example of how such Examen has been adapted to suit the needs and work done by organizational managers/leaders in 21st century.. Given that...

The New Jim Crow

...Erin Gorman 11/11/13 Reflection paper 3 The New Jim Crow In the book The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander, Alexander puts into perspective that racism still exists in society today. She explains that our criminal justice system is unfairly targeting African American men through mass incarceration with harsh punishment. When released from prison most of these men have less rights then when they entered. This is where Alexander’s idea of the new Jim Crow comes from. She argues that the rights being taken away from African American men are the same rights that they’ve had to fight for, for the past 100 years, and that they are constantly being denied their citizenship. The criminal justice system is using their crimes as an excuse to give harsh punishments and take away rights mirroring the old Jim Crow laws. There are a prominent number of African American men in prison. This is because the police are prejudice against people of color. They may not be doing it consciously but with the stigma that comes with being African American everyone watches them more closely than white men. With the blacks being watched more closely they are going to be getting caught more for their crimes and the whites will get off the hook more. This helps explain why there are so many black men in prison. Also with the stigma that African Americans are more violent and defiant they are more harshly punished for their crimes. If a black man and a white man commit the same crime the black man usually...

Business Ethics

...For the modern business ethics are a priori questions of corporate social responsibility. Opinion that the financial well-being of the least compels her to ethical behavior, is fundamentally wrong, the very life and business practice postulated the following statement: "Good ethics is good business." Otherwise, a negative reaction on the part of customers and partners will inevitably lead to a significant reduction in the profitability of the company, and widely disseminated by the media unsavory reputation will lead to a lack of any credibility. Nobel Prize winner Milton Friedman wrote that "the true role of business! "PICs in its use of energy and resources in activities designed to increase profits, provided that it adheres to the rules of the game ... participate in an open competition, without resorting to fraud and deception." Ethics imposes restrictions on the business system, being the moral rules and practices of a given society. Business Ethics - Business ethics based on honesty, openness, fidelity to one's word, the ability to function effectively in the market s compliance with applicable laws, rules and established traditsiyami.22 Experience confirms the importance of international business to business ethics in shaping the success of the company. Isllc Standards

...students and teacher accountability, the ISLLC Standards were implemented so that all school leaders were held accountable towards the success of all students and stakeholders. The ISLLC standards are essential towards the development of an effective school leader. Effective leadership begins with knowledge of the educational environment: the needs of individual students, strengths and weaknesses of faculty and staff members, knowledgeable in all aspects of instructional programs, student data, and scheduling. Becoming experts in the aforementioned areas allows for school leaders to develop a solid foundation for effective school leadership. The Collaborative Learning Community (Unwrapping the Standards) that took place over the last 8 weeks gave me an opportunity to understand the importance of the ISLLC standards and its functions; the purpose of each standard are essential to educating future administrators and assists them in becoming effective leaders. It gave me an opportunity to view my administrator and stakeholders in a different light and gave me an opportunity to learn from their strengths and weaknesses.
