The internet has grown consistently throughout the last few years and its impact on culture today is blatant. In addition to social media, video sharing sites such as YouTube receives attention for its global impact. However, YouTube is in the midst of social media controversy because individuals of all ages are connected to the site and are given unlimited access to videos. Although YouTube leaves its subscribers vulnerable to unsuitable content, it positively affects society because it informs people about current events and encourages them to express creativity.
YouTube’s impact remains beneficial because the site educates many in regards to current world affairs. For example, a study that researched YouTube’s political effect found that …show more content…
Furthermore, when asked about how teenagers stay updated with global news today, sixteen-year old student Abel Thomas agreed that “YouTube has educated [him] on the news today because the trending page of the website shows videos of the most relevant subjects around the world… They will talk about current events and give their perspective on the matter” (Thomas). YouTube is a community which builds upon itself, in the sense that there is a continuous cycle of new creators expressing themselves everyday. Such continuation results in an overall net increase in YouTubers because of the constant growth of people deciding to produce their own creative content. Furthermore, YouTube is influential because it “make[s] it possible for everyone in the network to be [a simultaneous] producer, distributor, and consumer of content. The relationship between broadcaster/media producer and audience that characterized 20th century mass communications has been radically changed” (Youtube). Being both a consumer and producer of videos is relatively new and the amount of people learning from other creators and developing their own “channel” is astounding. YouTubers are becoming proficient in multiple fields of business in media while expressing themselves creatively (E), which means they benefit from their own innovations. In an interview with Rini Jose, mother of two and Gen X-er (NE), she counters that “kids are not necessarily expressing more creativity. YouTubers are just
