...of PR Practitioners’ Use of Social Media in Crisis Planning Shelley Wigley, Ph.D., and Weiwu Zhang, Ph.D. Social media are increasingly changing the way public relations practitioners communicate and do their jobs. Scholars have begun to explore public relations practitioners’ general social media usage. This study is one of the few attempts to investigate how public relations practitioners use social media in crisis planning and crisis communication as well as in ordinary situations. A survey exploring social media and crisis planning was conducted with 251 members of the Public Relations Society of America. Nearly half of respondents (48%) said they have incorporated social media into their crisis plans. Of these respondents, most indicated they have incorporated Twitter as a tool in their crisis planning, primarily for distribution purposes. Additionally, the study found that public relations professionals whose organizations rely more heavily on social media tools in their crisis planning correlated positively with practitioners’ greater confidence in their organization’s ability to handle a crisis. As for practitioners’ use of social media in their every day practice, results revealed that a large percentage use social media on a personal level; however, results also indicated that a large percentage of respondents’ organizations (82%) use social media. Survey respondents indicated that the stakeholders they communicate with most via social media are potential customers and...

...POE, Crowdsourcing and Social CRM strategy. Coke’s ground-breaking and integrated social marketing approach could inspire many brands and their CMOs. Let’s take a deep dive here… Coca-Cola is asking its 50 million Facebook fans for creative input about how it can make the world a “happier place”, in a scheme to activate its Open Happiness theme and to collect customer data. With Coke’s new Facebook App, fans can register their interest in the scheme by filling out their details, and they can share their ideas on happiness. On the app, Coca-Cola explains that users who give their permission will next receive marketing e-mails from the company and information may be disclosed to service providers who handle campaigns on its behalf or to affiliates who may send marketing offers and information. Coke has said the ideas it is looking for will be ones which enable people to be more active, give to others, be social or “engage in other activities associated with increased happiness”. Further information, including timelines for the project, will be revealed in the coming weeks. Now there are a few things at Coke that could really inspire CMOs. Are you ready for some of my opinions? Most marketers around the globe have embraced social media, but they failed to integrate it. Organizing social media in an integrated way seems to be very difficult for brands. But not for Coca Cola. Due to the lack of big-data analyses and lack of integrated media metrics most CMOs are...

...OBE49749 Campaign for Sightsavers Tactical Response Recent research by the market research organisation DJS has revealed some intriguing trends in the attitudes of Britons to donating to charity (DJS 2013). For example, it was found that those who were earning an average income were more likely to donate to charities than those who were earning a higher than average income. Another very important finding of the survey was the fact that charities could be missing out on as much as £665 million in donations a year because they failed to address the main reasons for non-donation, which were found to be financial constraints and a distrust of charities due to lack of information. Among the concerns expressed by respondents were wastage costs, lack of transparency and administration costs. In other words, people were discouraged from donating to charities if they could not see a real and definite impact in the charity’s work. They wanted to feel that their donations were having a definite effect. Within this context then, the communication problems of a charity such as sight savers are twofold: On the one hand, the charity needs to make sure that it has a real presence in the public consciousness, and draw attention towards the urgency of the issues that it is concerned with. On the other hand, it needs to demonstrate to potential donors that their money is being used effectively to address these issues, and that a real impact is being made. A useful starting point for developing...

...Running head: CARDSWAP 1 CardSwap Daniel Watrous Marketing Northwest Nazarene University CARDSWAP 2 CardSwap Value Proposition Gift cards provide value to both merchants and consumers. However, the nature of the value derived by each is different. For the consumer, the value is convenience. For the merchant, there are many financial incentives to offer gift cards. Some have argued that the financial value to consumers is weak and consumer advocacy groups have been vocally opposed to the use of gift cards. Business Value Increased immediate cash flow is one obvious benefit to merchants that results from gift card sales. The merchants receive an influx of cash without giving up any inventory. Some governments have produced regulations regarding the issuance and servicing of gift cards (System, 2010) (Government, 2012). These rules define the type, frequency and magnitude of fees merchants can charge against outstanding balances available on gift cards. Regulations also dictate whether expiration dates can be applied. In most cases this regulation is free of any requirements on the merchant regarding the management of the cash in the time between the purchase of the gift card and its redemption. As such, merchants are free to choose a business policy that fits with their business objectives. In some cases gift cards are partially redeemed by a consumer. The industry refers to this as breakage (Horne, 2007) and some estimates put it at around 10 percent. This data suggests...

...ROLE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN CRISIS PREPAREDNESS, RESPONSE AND RECOVERY By Jason Christopher Chan (RPO) Executive Summary In recent years, social media has exploded as a category of online discourse where people create content, share it, bookmark it and network at a prodigious rate. Case examples of international organisations and governments using social media for crisis management are shared.
