Overview of Social Networking Sites

Social networking is a phenomenon which has existed since society began. Human beings have always sought to live in social environments. The proliferation of social networking sites (SNS) and their pervasion in everyday practices is affecting how Western societies manage their social networks. To a significant extent, SNS have shifted social networking to the Internet. In less than five years, these sites have grown from a niche online activity into a phenomenon through which tens of millions of internet users are connected, both in their leisure time, and at work.

There are various factors which have prompted us to consider the implications of these technologies for policy-making. One of these is the willingness of users to embrace SNS as a means of communication and social networking in everyday life. The increasing dependence on technology for basic communication also highlights the importance of analysing how SNS are affecting daily processes. Sites like Facebook, Friendster and LinkedIn are influencing the way users establish, maintain and cultivate a range of social relationships, from close friendships to casual acquaintances.

Social network sites (SNSs) are increasingly attracting the attention of academic and industry researchers intrigued by their affordances and reach. There are hundreds of SNSs, with various technological affordances, supporting a wide range of interests and practices. While their key technological features are fairly consistent, the cultures that emerge around SNSs are varied. Most sites support the maintenance of pre-existing social networks, but others help strangers connect based on

...Social Networking Sites – A Critical Analysis of Its Impact on Personal and Social Life I pick this topic “Social Networking Sites – A Critical Analysis of Its Impact on Personal and Social Life”. The reason I choose this topic is because I feel it has such an impact, some may be good some may be bad but let’s explore many of the pro’s and con’s in the coming paragraphs and make an assumption for ourselves. One of the first media sites to come out with was My Space didn’t have too much dealings with this except I accepted a lot of friends that I knew, in passing, acquaintances or my close friends. This was neat to get in touch with someone you haven’t seen in a while. That’s about all though. Once specific that I can tell you negative was a friend of mine got a divorce over this website social media type, his wife was talking to old boy friend’s and then later meeting them physically and would not stop so they unfortunately got a divorce and separated this was very sad to see personally. Let’s look at some of the statistics involved with these sites especially of the impact on the person and social life of people and businesses. Let’s take a look below and look at the visitors alone monthly, not annually this is monthly wow this was staggering to me. Face book at the moment holds a slot of no other. With just the sheer numbers you can imagine how much this can impact people’s lives in general even if you do not even have an account with these sites it could be a spouse...

...How Social Networking Sites affect our Society. Social network sites (SNSs) are as a web-based services that allow individuals to construct a profile, make connections, and interact with others within the system. Social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter have attracted millions of users. These sites help strangers connect based on shared interests, political view and activities (Boyd &Ellison 2009). The effects of these SNSs on our society attitude and social behavior remains a main bone of contention. Hard questions such as whether these SNSs create benefits by connecting people to each other or isolates people and truncates their relationships need to be addressed. It is thus why I chose to focus on the Effect of SNSs on our society. Functionalism asserts that every aspect of society is interdependent and contributes to the functioning of society as a whole. The theory argues that anything that does not serve a useful purpose in the society cannot endure from one generation to the next. We can hence conclude that SNSs are increasingly useful as their prevalence has only increased. The theory thus asserts that SNSs lead to the smooth running of the society. Some of the major functions of social media include networking, commercial function, Entertainment, socialization, enforcing social norms, and keeping us informed about our environment. SNSs also provides social support and gives a platform for people to share ideas. Although some...

...Samantha Chavez Professor Shannon Lujan English 104 2 May 2013 Social Networking Sites The use of social networking sites have increased dramatically in the past years because of the new technology that is being introduced (Kris Gowen 245). There is a wide variety of age groups that join social networking sites but the majority are teenagers. Every parent has a rule on what age their children should be able to join a social networking site. I know a lot of parents that have allowed their 12 year old children get a Facebook but then there are some parents who do not allow it until they are 15 or 16 years old. It really depends on how responsible the child is. There are also other things parents need to take into consideration when they let their children join sites like Facebook or Twitter. The big one that a lot of parents first think about is the safety and security of their personal lives. There are so many dangerous people who pretend to be someone their not (Kim 13). This becomes a big problem for insecure teenage girls who need someone to make them feel special. It puts them in danger when someone they do not know is trying to pry into their personal lives. This will also make parents have second thoughts about letting their children get one of these sites unless they monitor them closely. My parents let me get a Facebook when I was 14 years old but they checked it every week to make sure I knew all my friends and I was not talking to anybody I was not supposed to be...

...Social networking sites Navneet Kaur DeVry University Social networking sites Communication via Social Networking Sites such as Face book, negatively affect the young people to socialize and to develop and maintain healthy relationships. In today’s world social networking sites become a part our daily lives. The increasing use of internet had led us to a point where we prefer “liking photos”, writing “comments” and wishing our friends and relatives on these sites. Moreover, it keeps us updated about what is going on in other lives. But we have forgotten the real essence of relationships. Meeting people over coffee and dinner sounds fun compared to liking photos and wall posts on social network. Social networking sites have surely increased communication, brought us closer to friends but on other hand, it leads youth to become more addicted to these sites and shut themselves in a room with closed doors. Due to this, they even hardly interact with their parents and siblings staying with them. They tend to spend so many hours on social sites, sticking on a chair and disconnect themselves from real world. According to various studies, scientists’ evaluation determined that social isolation can lead youth to a host of emotional, psychological, physical and mental problems which include anxiety, depression and somatic complaints. The continual dominance of these social networking sites, overcome the ability to live with real relations by adopting a larger social...

...The Internet is constantly changing the way people interact, communicate, conduct business, seek jobs, find partners, and shop (Clark & Roberts, 2010). While many of use are using Social Networking Sites (SNS) such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and Bebo to stay connected with friends, employers are using these same SNSs as a source to gain background information on job applicants as well as cuurent employees. Most employers do not have policies in place to govern when and how to ensure the information obtained is accurate. As a result of this, two negative consequences can arise when employers view information online that they view as i nappropriate or unacceptable. Either employers will choose not to hire the job applicant or the current employee can be terminated. This article suggests that even though employers may have a legal right to use SNSs in this way, it is wrong for employers to do this unless the information obtained in this manner is essential to the job. The Social Responsibility Theory directs employers to conduct online background checks only when there is a business necessity due to the negative impact such impacts have on society. We have a legal, natural, and fundamental right to privacy which is defined as "freedom from unauthorized intrusion". I strongly feel as if my right to privacy is violated if my supervisor uses any information from my personal SNS against me. What I do and who I do it with in my spare time is my business...
