Describe two types of mental shortcuts that you make daily that help you to predict human and/or social behavior. Provide examples.
One of the types of mental shortcuts I use is the availability shortcut. Availability Heuristic is a mental shortcut that relies on immediate examples that come to mind. When you are trying to make a decision, a number of related events or situations might immediately come to mind. Lately there have been a number of young females getting assaulted in the area I live in after leaving or going to the gym at night. I now make it appoint to not to go to the gym alone for that reason. Another example of availability heuristic when people overestimate the frequency of dramatic death (e.g., dying in an airplane crash) and underestimate the frequency of less dramatic deaths. (2nd edition/ Roy F. Baumeister/ Brad J. Bushman Pg.144) Another type of metal shortcut that I use recently is simulation shortcut. Simulation heuristic describes people's tendency to think that events that are easy to imagine or mentally simulate an event. This actually happened to me yesterday. For my jobs Christmas party we played bingo. I was one number away from winning the two-thousand dollar jackpot which was very disappointing. Example from (2nd edition/ Roy F. Baumeister/ Brad J. Bushman Pg.144) In the Olympics, bronze medalists appear to be happier than silver medalists, because it is easier for a silver medalist to imagine being a gold medalist.
How have these mental shortcuts led to errors in predicting human or social behaviors? Describe two examples.
This metal shortcuts have led to errors in predicting human or social behaviors by causing disappointment, also by overseeing other events. In the common mental shortcut availability the FDA reported that chicken has caused cancer. Most of my family are meat eater except for myself and my brother. After reading the report she has promised to vegetarian until after the New Year.
How have these mental shortcuts led to biases about other people? Describe the type of biases you tend toward. The type of biases I tend to led towards is confirmation bias. Confirmation bias is the tendency to notice and search for information that confirms one’s beliefs and to ignore information that disconfirms one’s belief. I tend to look up just about everything I see or hear on the news. I don’t like to make judgments without knowing all of the information.

...respond to the acquaintance? Or how shall they respond to certain actions from another human being? These forms of social interactions and deliberations are what distinguish us human beings from other organisms. We are different because we make rational decisions whereas they react simply to stimuli, governed by instincts. According to Cognitive Social Psychology, human beings are reasonable creatures because we have advanced cognitive capacity to make logical choices about behaviors based on ourselves and the world around us. People's decisions are based on the understanding of the environment, including particular objects or events and the context in which those objects appear. When we encounter a stimulus, we make assessment about its meaning, and choose an appropriate response for it. Perception and cognition are no longer considered passive but rather active process on which we reinforce our own interpretation. They are understood as valuable instruments for a thoughtful organism adapting to its environment. (Gregory C. Elliott). Human perception is often influenced by the motivations underlying our participation in a social encounter. Our feelings and motives could lead to a biased understanding of what happened and why. Throughout a lifetime, our cognitive capacity varies with environment, interaction, and age. In the earliest stage, basic social development depends largely on interaction and bonding with people, especially parents or caretakers. Later on...

...Social Psychology Dawn S. Peck PSY 400 12/22/2014 David Brueshoff Social Psychology What is Social Psychology all about? Why is the study of it so important? Is there truly a purpose and benefit from the findings of the studies? Let’s look at each of these questions, break them down, and try to make sense of it all. Simply defined, Social Psychology is the scientific study of individual attitude and how it effects or influences others in a social context. It is helpful to understand the why, what, or could be, behind a behavior or reaction. Those that research this field, can provide credible insight to assist with understanding and ultimately contribute to the success of peace-keeping within society. There are many meanings behind Social Psychology, and it should be noted this branch of psychology is unique from other disciplines in the same field. Social Psychology Basics To be considered a “scientific study” there must be a theory, followed by a hypothesis and tested to support or reject the original theory. Methods of research include public surveys where both targeted and random speculation occurs. Work can be done in a laboratory with a controlled subject or in the field where everyday life happens. Social Psychology researchers pay particular attention not only to the cause and effect of behavior but they look deeper into the relationship we have with ourselves in effort to explain the overall difference of opinion and responses amongst...

Psy/400 Social Psychology

...Social Psychology Social psychology is the division of psychology that studies the social structure that surrounds an individual and his interactions as a social being. At times social psychology is confused with other disciplines closely related. Sometimes overlapping does occur into other disciplines but social psychology keeps focus on social environment and how it affects one another. Social psychology is reinforced with scientific methods and research that helps to differ from other divisions of psychology and keeps its own focus on structure, terminology, methods, and goals. Social psychology is about understanding individual behavior in a social environment and how it affects one another. It deals with how and why individuals feel, think, and do the things they do depending upon the social context (Myers, 2010). Social psychologist study, love and hate, conformity and independence, attitudes and beliefs. Understanding social psychology is very important because it gives a clear perception of how stereotyping takes formation in certain situations such as why racism and sexism subsist, how individuals fall in love, and how an individual can change into an entirely different person in a particular situation (Myers, 2010) . Social psychology is different in comparison to other disciplines such as clinical psychology, general psychology, and sociology because it focuses on an individual’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior affected by the existence of others. Its concern is...

Psy/201 Week 6 - Social Issues in Adulthood

...good source because it touches on the social issues of adults and what causes social anxiety and other issues. The article focuses on the Uppsala Longitudinal Study, which in 1985 collected data on 96 children nine years of age. The children's social development was then studied and compared as they became teenagers. Finally in 1997 when they were 21 years of age, the study compared their current social anxiety issues to how each of them were raised, what activities they participated in, and what social issues were still prevalent from the time they were 9 until they were 21 years old. The study found that children placed in non-parent day care showed much less social anxiety issues than children that did not participate in day care. The amount of social interaction that children receive at a young age, results in how socially active young and older adults are as they grow up. Shyness and inhibition plays a huge role in socialization and social anxiety. More sheltered children not encouraged to socialize may grow up to be anti-social as adults. The reason I chose this reference as a credible source is because it is not only peer reviewed and from a credible journal of psychology, but also because it focuses on how the social issues of adults is created, by the socialization of the children who grow up to be adults. Researching and locating the root cause of social anxiety has to start with the child and then continue with the social interactions that they face from children...

...Subject: Stowham Community Centre Proposal Finance | Introduction: In this report I will be telling you about the 3 options for the Stowham Community Centre and what I will recommend as the best choice and that will be more beneficial financially and socially. The beneficial part is that you will be saving more money and is cheapest, social part is that it’s for a certain age group where they will get along and can come and do some learning and meeting new people and be able to build up confidence and get involved into new activities. | Findings: In my Findings I have found that each option e.g. Café, Karts and Arts have a lot of sales but overall café has the most of a total of £25.066 which will be very profitable. In the monthly running up costs café and karts have the most expenses for the running costs whereas the Arts have a very cheap running costs with a total of £11.790 so when they are going through all the building and the stock also the insurance and wages and all the other bills will be very cheap because they will have profit of £5.000 every month because of their monthly income whereas café and Karts they will only have a profit of 1 to 2 thousand pound. The most successful to be in the set-up cost will be the Arts again because they have cheap expenses for the Equipment and stock whereas the Café and Karts are a lot more expensive to be paying for the cheapest Building work would be the Café but for the total for the set-up cost will be the Café. ...

...What do we mean at DePaul by a “Socially Responsible Leader”? DePaul’s Vision Twenty12 calls for a special focus on “developing socially-responsible leaders and engaged alumni.” This goal is central to the full expression and realization of our Catholic, Vincentian and urban mission, which challenges us to maintain vigilant attention to the common good and to the sacred dignity of all people, especially the poor and marginalized. The development of socially responsible leaders in today’s complex, global, and ever-changing world requires a commitment to students’ holistic and integrated learning by a community of faculty, staff and University partners who accompany and mentor students on their developmental path. Moreover, it requires that the University community itself embody what it seeks to develop in its students, thus acting as an effective mentoring community and environment. At DePaul, five broad categories have emerged as central to our understanding of socially responsible leadership: 1. Self-Understanding & Personal Integrity Socially responsible leaders have achieved a sense of self-authorship or personal agency. They critically assess and actively discern how their personal gifts, talents, resources, and abilities might best contribute to the broader human community. They articulate and live with a sense of authenticity, purpose, and ethical integrity. They maintain an appreciation for the transcendent dimension of human life, and seek ongoing personal...

Drama Reaction of Death of a Salesman

...salesman is known to be used in conveying social matter on the American society. Death of a salesman shows how the American dream can be harder to achieve than some people expect it to be. Arthur uses time to his advantage as he uses flashbacks to at one point have a conversation with his dead brother of a past conversation that he is showing other people as he is playing cards. They are used to show his brothers success to try and push him in the right direction for willies sake. His sons also go back to see their past and recollect. Gripping with a influence of the past is a theme that all literature has become in modern literature and of Death of a Salesman ("What Literary Devices Does Miller Use In "Death Of A Salesman"?", 2015).  The American Dream The American dream in my eyes is for wealth and happiness and many people would have the same dream and thoughts of what the American dream is and how they would precede it. Willy is always looking for a way to fix his sons after their failures and he uses the aspect of foreshadowing to try and show that even with the best of wises there is not always a way to fix problems for people that do not want to be fixed or that cannot fix themselves. Biff and willy also have a different look on the American dream and because he cannot live up to his father standards and expectations it contributes to the breakdown of the family ("Arthur Miller'S Death Of A Salesman Has Been Used To Convey Social Commentary", 2015). Imagination While...

Hello World

...January 30, 2009 The End of Solitude By William Deresiewicz What does the contemporary self want? The camera has created a culture of celebrity; the computer is creating a culture of connectivity. As the two technologies converge — broadband tipping the Web from text to image, social-networking sites spreading the mesh of interconnection ever wider — the two cultures betray a common impulse. Celebrity and connectivity are both ways of becoming known. This is what the contemporary self wants. It wants to be recognized, wants to be connected: It wants to be visible. If not to the millions, on Survivor or Oprah, then to the hundreds, on Twitter or Facebook. This is the quality that validates us, this is how we become real to ourselves — by being seen by others. The great contemporary terror is anonymity. If Lionel Trilling was right, if the property that grounded the self, in Romanticism, was sincerity, and in modernism it was authenticity, then in postmodernism it is visibility. So we live exclusively in relation to others, and what disappears from our lives is solitude. Technology is taking away our privacy and our concentration, but it is also taking away our ability to be alone. Though I shouldn't say taking away. We are doing this to ourselves; we are discarding these riches as fast as we can. I was told by one of her older relatives that a teenager I know had sent 3,000 text messages one recent month. That's 100 a day, or about one every 10 waking minutes, morning...

...Penney, (2013) defines “The Biopsychosocial Model” as an approach or method that guides and helps to understand individual’s biological, psychological and social aspects, for example emotions, behaviours and thoughts. Therefore the importance of understanding human health and illness will aid nurses with knowledge of how to provide holistic care. It is a health care model that deals with the clinical care and practical guidance to the patient. Biopsychosocial model show the importance for practitioners to recognise the factors that contribute to biologically, psychologically and socially of different individuals and showing confidence in understanding different aspects of life to encourage elderly client to show their personality, which aids them and keep them in control at different stages of life HEALTH, PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS AND SOCIAL ASPECTS OF THOSE INDIVIDUALS. (D) Physical Factors The skeletal system of an individual goes through major changes because the musculoskeletal system response slows down due to aging affecting movement and posture, for example loss of calcium from the bone. Banks et al. (2009) stated that mineral density will decrease after menopause. Therefore at this life stage of women they are prone of hip fracture. Ageing affects bones making them weaker and less dense which make them likely to fracture easily, Individuals might find it difficult to lift things and the less dense the bones the less flexible movement becomes because of the weakness...
