DEFINITION OF MASS MEDIA: “The media is the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s the strongest power of media. Because they, control the minds of masses.”
-Malcolm X, 1925. Many of us still wonder what mass media is as all of us has live together with it for years, even centuries. Mass media plays an important role in this modern era of society as media is counted as the “middle man” of the community and the government which helps to communicate between the government and the society. Mass media is a type of media which is meant for a huge sum of audience. It may take the form of broadcasting, as in terms of television, radio or printed media as in magazines and newspapers. On my own point of view, Information and Communication goes along with mass media in this modern era of society to blend into a modern way of life to the common living in this global generation.

“All of us who professionally use the mass media are the shapers of society. We can vulgarize that society. We can brutalize it. Or we can help lift it onto a higher level.”
-William Bernbach, 1911. Media existed because of higher living standards throughout the world. People tend to watch movie instead of reading newspapers and search for news online. As we all know, a picture is worth a thousand words. Media producers produced movies to create a way of communication between the happenings surrounding the society and the audiences. For example, during the World War II, the huge amount of combat films in Hollywood is to rise up the awareness against the communist that colonized the country at that time and to boost up nationalism spirits in the audience mind. Throughout the years, Hollywood based in California is one the leading country of producing American films such as combat film, romance, action, dramas and so on. It is also the major film industry producing American films such as Paramount Picture in the year 1912; Warner Brothers in the year 1923; 20th Century Fox in the year 1935 and many more. Hollywood is not only a place of major film production; it is also one of the major places where lots of actor and actresses are raised. On the other hand, Hollywood has also become one of the famous and interesting tourism worldwide due to its uniqueness of clean environment. On the other hand, films produced in Hollywood usually gets the audience full attention because of the multiplicity selection of the movie either in fiction or non-fiction movie because of the unique way on how movie from Hollywood production is produced. For example, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. This movie hit the top box office for weeks due to the techniques the movie was produced. This movie uses the main technique of Computer-Generated Imaginary, CGI in short where the action scenes in the movie appears to be real. In terms of how movie is produced, the main idea of the movie still depends on how the audiences view the movie and interpret the message that the movie is trying to convey. “The media's power is frail. Without the people's support, it can be shut off with the ease of turning a light switch.”

The main issue now is, how Hollywood becomes an open propaganda agent for the military during the World War II and how combats film like Casablanca (1942) and Objective Burma (1945) to arouse the awareness against communism and cultivate nationalism among the audiences point of view. In certain way point of view, combat films type of movies had been produced since during the 40’s. For examples, Casablanca, Objective Burma, Pearl Harbour and so on. In a certain way, the movie produced official message to transmit the way of being isolated and non-isolated. The producer makes such kind of movie to keep the audiences to remember of the propaganda and historical of World War II awareness from being invented. As for example, Pearl Harbour is basically a classic tale of romance set during war that complicates everything. Citizens do everything they can in their power to survive, preventing loved ones get killed. These scenes can be related to the situation of World War II where people wanted to be safe. It appears that, combat movie films cultivate communism that are usually shown by the protestors. Communists is seen by the citizens in a way that they are the group that try to disrupt the peacefulness in the world. Besides, mostly during the World War II, Japanese is the one that acts cruelly and it shows the audience how Japanese act when they colonized other country. In certain movies, the movies also show scenes on how Japanese military reacts towards prisoner that are captured during the war. For men, they killed or some, be slaves to the government. For girls, they became prostitute to serves and satisfied the soldier. For examples, movie that shows all these scenes are The Last Samurai. In this movie, the scenes shows the situation citizens suffered during World War. People faces economic crash, lack of food, lost of property and so on. As for the audiences, after viewing and sharing a common emotional feel with each other during the World War, people starts to appreciate each other and help each other during hard times. They cooperate and fight for their freedom together. The feelings of loving their own country are foster in their heart.

THE ROLE OF MASS MEDIA IN SERVING GOVERNMENT: Mass media, to government is the very key to communicates to their people. Whenever it comes to spreading news to the society, governments will use mass media to help complete their task. Mass media is a type of communication that reaches and influence large numbers of people in a wide range such as newspapers, popular magazines, radio, and television, which is the most accessible way to communicate. In different ways, whatever people have in mind about mass media, they will assume that it is all about innovation and modernity that is continually develop gradually and producing ways to speed up the way humanity keep going on.

CONCLUSION: In conclusion, mass media is one of the best ways for government to raise the awareness of anti-communist to the society. The impact of mass media is very strong as the longer an individual is exposed to the message of the media, the easier an individual will believe that the message is true In addition to that, this is why mass media is the main source of entertainment and information for the society nowadays. It is the widest range of source where people will receive both positive and negative information globally. Thus the local relies mostly on mass media which is controlled by the government. No doubt that the mass media will continue to become greater as their scope of view to the world continues to grow.

...Unit Four The Great Society Johnson took the presidency at the death of the beloved Kennedy. As history often does, it repeated itself and showed the public was not ready or able to trust a president who was not voted into office. Lyndon B. Johnson took office and sworn to continue the liberal agenda of Kennedy and called for a “Great Society” to end poverty and racial injustice (pg. 146). The Great society was a set of domestic programs proposed or enacted in the United States on the initiative of Johnson. The two main goals of the Great Society social reforms were the elimination of poverty and of the racial injustice. New Major spending programs that addressed education, medical care, urban problems, and transportation were launched during this period. Civil Rights Act, Medicare, Housing and Urban Development, Elementary and Secondary Education Act were a few programs enacted with Johnsons Great Society. The Great Society in scope and sweep resembled the New Deal domestic agenda of Franklin Roosevelt, but differed sharply in types of programs. “Johnson’s political genius also ensured passage of the new civil rights laws, The Civil Rights Act of 1964 gave the federal government the power to sue to desegregate public accommodations and schools” (pg. 148).
