Because of the human tendency to rank one another, inequality emerges. Soon some people are at the top of the hierarchy while others are at the bottom. In the classic novel animal farm, George Orwell created a barnyard society where pigs where ultimately take over the previous classless animal society by altering one of their cardinal rules " all animals are equal" to " all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others. Sociologist call this social ranking social stratification.
Social stratification is the creation of layers of a population who possess unequal shares of scarce desirables, the most important which are income, wealth, power, and prestige. Each of the layers are social class a segment of population whose members hold a relatively similiar share of scarce desirables and who share values, norms, and an identifiable lifestyle. A stratification structure might include upper upper, middle upper, lower upper, upper middle, middle middle and lower lower classes. Karl marx and max weber made the most significant contributions to the study of social stratification. Marx demonstrated the importance of the economic foundations of social classes, while weber accented the prestige and power aspects of stratification. Together the work of these two great minds reveal to us that stratification is multidimensional. Although both marx and weber were concerned with inequality their emphases were different. For marx, the economic factor was an independent variable explaining the existence of social classes. Weber on the other hand viewed the economic dimension as a dependent variable. Weber was more concerned with the economic consequences of...

But sociology is much more than that, it correlates seemingly general human behavior with society, using sociological imagination, one can analyze an episode of an individual’s life to border social issues and historical events. It allows oneself to denaturalize from one’s immediate environment, questioning it and connecting it to broader social dynamics. As an Asian female student who majors in biology and minors in piano performance, I will use sociological imagination to connect my life in a macro level. I will analyze the period of time when I struggled to assimilate into the American culture and connect such event to bigger social issues such as the bamboo ceiling and the glass ceiling in order to address......

Agent of Socialization – The media increase social cohesion by presenting a common, more or less standardized view of culture through mass communication. Enforcer of Social Norms – The media often reaffirm proper behavior by showing what happens to people who act in a way that violate societal expectations. These messages are conveyed when the bad guy gets clobbered in cartoons or is thrown in jail on CSI. Yet the media also sometimes glorify disapproved behavior, when it is physical violence, disrespect to a teacher or drug use. Media does also play a critical in human sexuality. Many people object to the widespread availability of pornography on the web. Others are concerned about the way sexual predators use chat rooms to take advantage of children. Conferral of Status – The mass media confer status on people, organizations, and public issues. Whether it is an issue like the homeless or a celebrity. They single out one from thousands of other similarly placed issues or people to become significant. ...widespread social processes #2 * Marx, Weber, and Durkheim were disturbed by the social processes they believed to be driving the change, such as the quest for solidarity, the attainment of social goals, and the rise and fall of classes, to name a few examples. * They were also the first to employ the sociological imagination which is the ability to situate personal troubles within an informed framework of social issues #12 * Armchair sociology is an attempt to understand how the social world works without employing scientific methods #5 * Genie Wiley was a feral child who was the victim of extraordinarily severe abuse, neglect and social isolation. Her circumstances are prominently recorded in the annals of abnormal child psychology. #1 * Quantitative sociology is generally a numerical approach to understanding human behavior. Surveys with large numbers of participants are aggregated into data sets and analyzed using statistics, allowing researchers to discern patterns in human behavior. * Qualitative sociology generally opts for depth over breadth. Sociology Unit 4 Functionalism Revision Notes Aqa

...FUNCTIONALISM DURKHEIM’S FUNCTIONALIST THEORY * functionalists see society as based on value consensus – it sees members of a society as sharing a common culture * sharing the same culture produces social solidarity – binding individuals together and telling them how to behave in order to achieve solidarity, SOCIETY HAS TWO KEY MECHANISMS: SOCIAL CONTROL -rewards for conformity -punishments for deviance -ensures that individuals behave in the way that society requires SOCIALISATION -instils the shared culture into its members. -insures that people internalise the same norms and values. -so they act in the way that society requires * While functionalists see too much crime as destabilising society, they also see crime as inevitable and universal. * Every known society has some level of crime and deviance – a crime free society is a contradiction in terms. * DURKHEIM: ‘’is normal... an integral part of all healthy societies’’ REASONS WHY CRIME IS FOUND IN ALL SOCIETIES: In complex modern societies, there is a diversity of lifestyles and values. Different groups develop their own subcultures with distinctive norms and values, so what a subculture sees as normal may be seen as deviant in mainstream society. For example, half the class would play our recorders in sync with one another, and other students in the class would play percussion. With the rhythm of the music combined, the feel and sound of the music gives the audience a feel of a different environment, such as feeling as though you are taking a journey through an Indian village, or celebrating the first fourth of July in America. As I progressed through the year, music classes turned into singing as well. ...through the paper. Halfway through the paper, I saw my friend John suspiciously looking at the class. My instincts told me that something was wrong. As a result, I began to keep an eye on John. Suddenly, I saw John taking notes out from his pencil case! My mouth hung wide open and I gasped in shock. How could John do that! I thought should I report him? The devil in my mind said that I should not care about this thing after all, he is still my best friend while the angel said that I should be honest and report him. After thinking for a while, I decided to report him. I raised my hand and told the teacher “ Mr Tan, John is cheating by using notes from his pencil case.” The teacher nodded his head and walked towards John’s table. Mr Tan said “John! Why are you cheating?” John shook his head to deny that he did not cheat. Mr Tan confiscated his pencil case and dumped the contents out. Out came pencils, erasers and pens. But there was no notes inside! John let out a smirk from his mouth. I was shocked! I thought that there was a note? Just when I thought all hope was lost, Mr Tan found another zip at the pencil case and he opened it. Suddenly, John’s smirk began to vanish. Waves of panic overwhelmed him. The hidden note was found there! Mr Tan looked at John sternly. He brought John to the principal’s office to explain what had happened. On the next day, the fiery-tempered Discipline Master caned John during assembly period. After this......

Note Taking

...Improving Your Note Taking ▪ Effective note taking is one of the keys to succeeding in school. Students should devote a considerable amount of time reviewing information discussed during classroom lectures. It is very difficult remembering specific details from classroom lectures without good notes. These note taking strategies will help you to take better notes: ▪ Make clear and accurate notes Make sure to take legible and accurate notes since it is not uncommon to forget key details discussed in class after it has ended. Frequently, students comprehend the teacher's lecture, so they'll neglect to jot down specific details only to forget them later. Students who keep accurate notes can review them later to fully grasp key concepts during personal study time. Additionally, since during classroom lectures teachers frequently cover many topics, effective notes enable students to concentrate on specific topics. ▪ Come to class prepared Students properly prepared for class usually take better notes. Proper preparation includes completing assigned reading prior to class and reviewing notes from previous lectures. Students who do this can ask questions about confusing concepts and be prepared for new topics. ▪ Compare your notes To ensure your notes are as accurate and detailed as possible, compare them with the notes of other students after class is over. This is useful because your colleagues will frequently write down lecture details that......

Note Taking Assignment

...Dean Helton Note-Taking Assignment 1. Why did you choose Cornell, Outline, or Visual Map? I chose the visual map way of taking my notes this morning at church. I have actuallynever taken my notes that way before, but I really enjoyed it. I am a kinesthetic learner and seeing maps and graphs help me understand things a lot better than just simple notes. I was nervous at first to take my notes this way but I very quickly got the hang of it. After the sermon it was much easier for me to look over my notes and understand what the message and sub nots were pointing out. I will now take all of my sermon notes this way. 2. What did you like about the style of note taking you chose? I enjoyed using this style for many reasons. One of the main reasons was because it gave me the opportunity to listen more to the sermon wrather than focusing on writing down the notes that we were given. It also was a huge help to me after when I was looking over the notes. It gave me a clearer picture of what the sermon was about. 3. What did you dislike about the style of note taking you chose? I think the only thing I disliked about it is that it is almost like an outline,a nd if you are not careful you could miss an important long point that need sto be recorded just for the sake of making your picture graph look good. I added a few take away points at the bottom of my notes that I felt like I needed to add so that I could better understand the over all message. 4. How do you......
