Software Applications and Information Systems Software applications and information systems are vital to successfully managing and administrating daily activities within a company. Organizational departments within a company rely on these applications and systems to manage the people side of business, marketing methods, and accounting processes. Three specific systems are the human resources information system (HRIS), marketing software, and accounting information system (AIS). Now let us look into the inner workings and advantages of these applications and systems. The success of human resources management (HRM) department within a company is dependent on a HRIS. “A human resource information system is defined as computer based application for assembling and processing data related to the human resource management function” (Lawler, 2011, Human Resources Information System, para. 1). An HRIS is a database management system containing multiple files of data relevant to the personnel within the company. The system contains applications that allow users to input, edit, and retrieve data in many forms. Data retrieval is in predefined reports that address many personnel management issues such as application tracking, job evaluations, succession planning, and benefits administration. Additionally, HRISs include tools that users can generate ad hoc reports and select specific cases or even particular parts of cases for review (Lawler, 2011). Marketing makes a company thrive in today’s economic environment. “Marketing software helps to create catalogs, manage marketing projects, segment customer databases” (IBM, 1998-2009, Management Software, para. 2).
