Choosing Software Applications It is vital that you choose a software tool that fits the requirements of your application today and with no trouble balances as your system develops. Currently there is an entire innovative group of software products that bring the value IT consultants are looking for. Many have been built to provide the competences essential to function as a service provider combined into the enterprise. “Organizations generally seek technology as a method to increase productivity, solve issues and save money. Not having a well-defined strategy for purchasing software could result in the purchase of varied software products and services that actually cost you more money in the long term, due to long-term maintenance costs, lack of use or the use of similar systems to fill in the feature gaps” (Rogers). Using the following criteria in evaluating software: functionality, cost and financial terms, vendor’s success stories, and security; it will guarantee that you select a software solution that meet a precise business necessity. In this paper I will describe how using the selected criteria would help in choosing a software application for an organization.
Functionality
When selecting a software application you must first look at the software’s functionality. The organization should ask the question: Does the package do what the organization needs? Functionality is the sum of what a product can do for a user. A product’s functionality is used by vendors to classify features and allows consumers to have a set of competences. The organization must collect precise requests for what’s needed in the software. The result obligation is to make parallel with the objectives of the organization and must meet the necessities of the shareholders. The functionality of

Information Systems and Software Applications

...Information Systems and Software Applications Information Systems and Software Applications Information systems and software applications that are available to organizations enhance productivity and allow businesses to function to their maximum potential. This day in age, it is essential that these resources be taken advantage of by the vast majority of employees in a company. Three departments that benefit an extraordinary amount from information systems and software applications are human resources, management and marketing. Human resource departments use information systems and software applications to manage employees within a company. Multiple software applications can be used by a single department and an example of this would be the human resource department using one application to monitor employee turnover and another application to screen job applicants (Rainer & Turban, 2008). The ability to manage these two job functions through software applications make the jobs of employees in the human resource department easier and increase the overall effectiveness of the entire company. The applications allow human resources to hire the best employees for the job openings and effectively manage all of the data that they compile. Management also uses information systems and software applications to manage their employees. Management information systems are used to produce reports from transaction data in isolated functional areas (Rainer & Turban, 2008). The reports...

...Application Software, Application Design, and Software Design Francisco P. Cano Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Application Software, Application Design, and Software Design The article by Jack W. Reeves that I chose delves deeply into what he believes software design is and whether or not software design is an engineering discipline. The author contends that it is not. To support this he relates a real life experience. He states: “Years ago I was attending a seminar where the question came up of whether software development is an engineering discipline or not. While I do not remember the resulting discussion, I do remember how it catalyzed my own thinking that the software industry has created some false parallels with hardware engineering while missing some perfectly valid parallels. In essence, I concluded that we are not software engineers because we do not realize what a software design really is. I am even more convinced of that today.” (Reeves, 1992) He continues by stating that the final goal of engineering is some type of documentation. He concludes that argument by stating “The final goal of any engineering activity is the some type of documentation. When a design effort is complete, the design documentation is turned over to the manufacturing team. This is a completely different group with completely different skills from the design team. If the design documents truly represent a complete design, the manufacturing team can proceed to build the product....

...Software Applications For my report I have selected to use one software program that works directly with management, finance, and accounting departments inside a business. Sage Peachtree Pro is a helpful tool for small-businesses. Peachtree works very well with Microsoft Office programs and has many tools that can help a business struggling with accountability and organization. Sage Peachtree Pro 2011 is a software program for small businesses to give tools needed for management, finance, and accounting. Sage Peachtree links directly with Microsoft Word and Excel to create financial reports and print out flyers for marketing. Peachtree has a detailed job revenue system that shows a business’s spending, estimated profits of a certain job, and how long a job is scheduled to last. Creating individual departments inside Peachtree will allow the user to create detailed budgets that will assist in schedule and planning of a job. A manager can create individual reports for each job center that helps assists in program control and oversight. The program screen has a business status page that has charts and graphs showing key company data such as account balances, customers who have debts outstanding, and vendors who have not been paid (Murray, 2009). Paying bills online is an easy task with Sage Peachtree. Setting up payments is easy and with Peachtree the user can create the date for a payment in the future, this can be very important tool for many businesses. Each transaction...

Choosing Software Applications

...Choosing Software Applications   Choosing Software Applications As an employee of a large state government agency, it is very important to have hardware and software that allows employees to complete business processes in a more efficient and timely manner. Often the decision has to be made whether or not to purchase new software or develop it in-house by the IT department. If new software applications are developed, it is important that the software can easily integrate with pre-existing applications if a total overhaul is not being executed. Software development can be a very costly venture; therefore, the upfront and long-term cost of developing software in-house must be carefully considered as an option. Not only are there costs associated in developing the software, but there is also a cost related to the ongoing support and infrastructure required to operate and maintain the applications. When making the decision to develop new software in-house there are several different mechanisms that come into play, which are handled by a steering committee through the process of a system development life cycle (SDLC). From the viewpoint of an employee, the agency can utilize the IT department to help formulate the exact requirements of the system and can compare the different features that may be available within an software package that is already created. Thereafter, a cost-effective breakdown of developing the same software in-house is provided. The way the newly...
