Something Bigger Than You and I

...Something Bigger Then You and I The Story of JR By: Angelenia Cannizzaro-Ndrecaj In loving memory of Nichols Sumner Juvenile Delinquents come in all shapes sizes and colors, there is no one way to describe a “Juvenile Delinquent”. There are many theories on how a child emerges into a juvenile delinquent. However to pinpoint one upbringing or another will cause a juvenile delinquent no one can really say. Juvenile delinquents are minors, usually defined as being between the ages of 10 and 18, who have committed some act that violates the law. These acts aren't called “crimes” as they would be for adults. Rather, crimes committed by minors are called “delinquent acts.” Once a delinquent is over the age of 18 they are considered an adult and all incidents will be considered crimes. Instead of a trial, the juvenile has an “adjudication,” after which she or he receives a “disposition” and a sentence. However, juvenile proceedings differ from adult proceedings in a number of ways. Delinquent acts generally fall into two categories. The first type of delinquent act is one that would be considered a crime had an adult committed it. For particularly serious crimes, some jurisdictions will even try children as adults. When children are tried as juveniles, on the other hand, parents are often required to pay the court costs for the child. The second type of delinquent act is one that wouldn’t normally be a crime had an adult performed...

Something You Want to Change or Fix in This World.

...I read somewhere “I can only see a better world built on the ashes of this one”. Still trying to figure out what it really means. Gandhi believed we must be the change we want to see in this world. But what change can we effect? The world isn’t going to change just because you don’t like it. Change means different things to different people. For Macklemore change meant changing world’s point of view on homosexuality. He was frustrated how the world around him viewed same sex marriage and he wanted to help change that. Our society is evolving; change is inevitable so why not change for the betterment? So what is it that I want to “change” or “fix” in this world? I think I want to get rid of religions. No, it does NOT mean that I’m an atheist, or I don’t believe in God. I do. With all my heart, but what is today that man needs religion for? To be ethical and moral? Every sane person on the planet knows right from wrong without needing a religion to tell them. It's a natural instinct of all animals and probably the only remaining animal instinct in humans that is beneficial. Many religions enforce these altered ideas of right and wrong with blind faith and self-righteous attitudes, which in turn, creates more problems pertaining to ethics and morals. I firmly believe the most ethical and moral human beings are the ones who know right from wrong and also have no affiliation to any religion. The change I suppose that I want to see is to stop using religion to target minorities...

Leadership Is the Art of Getting Others to Do Something You Want Done

...“Leadership is the art of getting others to do something you want done because they want to do it.” (Dwight D. Eisenhower). Whilst evaluating this statement, I’ll also question how it differs from management and why? Introducing this essay, it will be an evaluative text looking at key conceptual ideas into the quote stated above by the former United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower and how it differentiates from management. Addressing this matter, it can be seen that there are pros and cons into the statement “Leadership is the art of getting others to do something you want done because they want to do it.” Firstly, it can be suggested that people will follow leaders in a trustworthy sense meaning that they are willing to follow instructions as they feel credulous and have faith in the ambition and skills of their leader/manager. On the other hand, it appears that employees may feel pressured to act upon orders given from their leader/manager as they could see it as part of their job responsibilities essentially and are just following procedures given even if they may have an opposing opinion on the matter (I’ll be exploring this matter to a further extent in the first paragraph). From a personal point of view, interpreting the contrast between leadership and management can be difficult. For example, leadership is seen as more of a characteristic and/or a component of management and an effective way for managers to influence their employees in ways in which they feel are...

People are never satisfied with what they have; they always want something more or something different. Use specific reasons to support your answer. TOEFL Independent Writing 6: Topic List 122 (不限时完整版) Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People are never satisfied with what they have; they always want something more or something different. Use specific reasons to support your answer. It is universally recognized that people should be satisfied sometimes, they shouldn't be avaricious. Tracing the hidden reasons, this is probably because some people failed their dreams and think accomplishing the goal is impossible for everybody. With the negative impacts of this idea, the human beings cannot develop forward anymore. Whatever, I think the phenomenon that people are never well-pleased with what they have and always pursue something better has to be admitted. By this I mean that people are never satisfied in their daily life. They may have something, but when they see newer things that give them the same function, they will buy again. Also, if they have some kind of thing, and they realize that there are better things in this aspect, they will buy the better ones and throw their older one away. Every year, Apple Inc pose their new iPhone, and then millions of people in the world buy it, many of them have an iPhone, say iPhone 5, and it performances very...

...Batwa: The Forgotten Tribe By Charnae Evans SOC/120 Robert Bruce 01/21/2012 In the country of Rwanda, there are three different types of divisions of ethnic groups. These ethnic groups are Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa, or better known as Batwa. There were many different reasons to why these ethnic divisions were thought to be from different origins. People believed that they all looked very much alike to one another with a few differences in appearance. One of differences that stood out to people was height. Both the Batwa and Hutu was well thought-out short, with the importance of being second-rate to others. While on the other hand, the Tutsi were taller, as well as handsome. They were thought to be authoritative because of these traits. The stereotype between them eventually clashed and the divisions between them was very political. Although they had these different traits about them, they had similarities as well. They spoke the same language, worshiped within the same religion. These were some of the main reasons to why they were to be from the same culture. When it comes to ethnicity and race, they both are considerably different. Race comes to someone’s appearance. For example, race can be the color of the skin as well as what a person is born with, like hair color, eye color, and bone structure. Ethnicity on the other hand is described as someone beliefs and nationality. For example, how a Caucasian person has small lips and narrow nose...

Reinforcement and Punishment

...positive meaning good and negative being bad; but in operant conditioning - positive means you are adding to the environment and negative means you are taking something away from the environment. You have to think in math terms ;) POSITIVE means to add something and NEGATIVE means to take something away. Therefore, positive reinforcement is the presentation of something, which STRENGTHENS a behavior. This is something that occurs to all of us throughout our lives. For example, your child does his chores and is given a weekly allowance as a reward. The behavior that is increased is doing the chores and the addition into the environment is the weekly allowance. We have added (money) to strengthen the behavior - added equals positive, strengthen means reinforce. Remember, operant conditioning is more like math with + and - Negative reinforcement is what often gets confused with punishment. But stay with me with this rationale... it is still reinforcement. I think negative reinforcement is confusing to students because we think of negative as something BAD; however, in operant conditioning, it might or might not be something bad but it *ALWAYS* means the removal of something. Taking away TV or money (minus) to get them to strengthen chore behavior. Remember, taking away can be used to strengthen a behavior ; thus negative reinforcement. Do you see the difference in + and - reinforcement? Punishment Punishment is to make a behavior...
