Souls on Ice
Individuality and commonness are but one of two things. Although, these two are expressed in different ways, so Mark Doty implies in his essay and poem “Souls on Ice”. The essay can be seen as the progression of Doty’s epiphany about himself as a person, which is idealistically described in his poem. Doty begins his essay by recounting a time in a Stop ‘N Shop in which he was star struck by the beauty and luminosity of a stack of mackerels. Metaphors are used to describe the event and are also claimed to be what makes us as an individual person. Upon Doty’s gaze at the mackerels, metaphors served as his thinking which he knew were unique and his very own. Moreover, descriptions formulated about the fishes brought Doty to the realization of what he perceives reflects his own psychic state, but can easily be mistaken for “neutral” thinking. “Soul, heaven” were put in the poem for the sole purpose of yielding depth. These two words engaged Doty to argue whether or not he, or you, could lose oneself “entirely in the universe / of shimmer”. Now, it is important to note that he did not distinguish between each mackerel, but instead saw them as a whole, hence why he questions what it means to be a self. After realizing the poem’s “subject-beneath-the-subject”, it is then he decides what it means to be a self. Doty explains how even though the mackerels were dead; they still seemed to live on through the very essence they gave off as a whole. Thus, stating that the moral of the essay and story are “the limits of “me” are our hardest lesson”, but the idea of commonness is nonetheless consoling to his death. For our glory is not our individuality but our commonness. Doty did not like the idea and message behind this, but still embraced it, for our world is too complicated to settle only with one’s

Narrative Essay Life of Pi

...The Divine comedy Summarry By: Dante Alighieri At the age of thirty-five, on the night of Good Friday in the year 1300, Dante finds himself lost in a dark wood and full of fear. He sees a sun-drenched mountain in the distance, and he tries to climb it, but three beasts, a leopard, a lion, and a she-wolf, stand in his way. Dante is forced to return to the forest where he meets the spirit of Virgil, who promises to lead him on a journey through Hell so that he may be able to enter Paradise. Dante agrees to the journey and follows Virgil through the gates of Hell. The two poets enter the vestibule of Hell where the souls of the uncommitted are tormented by biting insects and damned to chase a blank banner around for eternity. The poets reach the banks of the river Acheron where souls await passage into Hell proper. The ferryman, Charon, reluctantly agrees to take the poets across the river to Limbo, the first circle of Hell, where Virgil permanently resides. In Limbo, the poets stop to speak with other great poets, Homer, Ovid, Horace, and Lucan, and then enter a great citadel where philosophers reside. Dante and Virgil enter Hell proper, the second circle, where monster, Minos, sits in judgment of all of the damned, and sends them to the proper circle according to their sin. Here, Dante meets Paolo and Francesca, the two unfaithful lovers buffeted about in a windy storm. The poets move on to the third circle, the Gluttons, who are guarded by the monster Cerberus. These sinners...

Theologies in a Song of Ice and Fire

...Theologies in A Song of Ice and Fire For my final paper, I will discuss a few of the religions in A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin. I will describe and show how these fictional religions compare to factual ones. I will mainly focus on how it relates to Christianity and its various forms, but I will also include other religions in smaller detail. Before I dive right into the religions, I will give a brief description of A Song of Ice and Fire and why Martin, a lapsed Catholic and proclaimed atheist, decided to include such a large amount of religion in the series. The tale takes place in the fictional realms of Westeros, Essos, and Sothoryos. In these fictional realms, power and religion sits above all else. Westeros, also known as the Seven Kingdoms, is the main continent described in the series. The land of Westeros became a “melting pot” for religions after Aegon the Conqueror succeeded in capturing all of Westeros. Before this conquest, there were multiple kingdoms, all practicing their own religions. The unification of countries created much adversity as some religions faded away while others became universal. The series focuses on a set of main characters and how they rise and fall from power. Martin uses religion in the book to create a sense of realism. Due to how prominent of a role religion played in our medieval history, the inclusion of religion in the series adds depth and extra diversity. His reasoning for this is The Crusades. The Crusades shaped...

The Absence Of Light In James Baldwin's Sonny Blues

...have the blues from being raised in a ruff Harlem neighborhood, from trying to escape his past, and from being frustrated as a musician. At the end of the day Sonny will remain a musician. Music is Sonny’s backbone. Playing the piano motivates and afflicts him all at once. The music that he plays at the nightclub is ‘the blues”. Creole refreshes the musicians that the music that they are playing is not joyful music, its soulful music. So, the blues could also be referring to Sonny’s emotions but also might be indicating the music he plays. “A great block of ice got settled in my belly and kept melting there slowly all day long, while I taught my classes in algebra. It was a special kind of ice. It kept melting, sending trickles of ice water all up and down my veins, but it never got less”. The ice represents his fear and discomfort. Just as his agony is secured in him, Sonny could also be sealed in him in the form of ice, so that he can continue to teach his class. All of his “warmth” is on the outside of him, and manifest into sweat. The brother can’t handle Sonny’s pain because he doesn’t want that pain to develop into his life. He doesn’t reach out to Sonny until his daughter passes from polio, and he reaching out to the only person who might understand his suffering. Sonny comes homes and the brother suddenly feels that “icy dread” feeling again. Light appears in many forms through out “Sonny’s Blues”, as moonlight, as a spotlight, sometimes as the absence of light. Light...

Julius Ceasar

...sailor who has returned from a long sea voyage. The Mariner stops a man who is on the way to a wedding ceremony and begins to narrate a story. The Wedding-Guest's reaction turns from bemusement to impatience and fear to fascination as the Mariner's story progresses, as can be seen in the language style: for example, Coleridge uses narrative techniques such as personification and repetition to create either a sense of danger, of the supernatural or of serenity, depending on the mood of each of the different parts of the poem. The Mariner's tale begins with his ship departing on its journey. Despite initial good fortune, the ship is driven south off course by a storm and eventually reaches Antarctica. An albatross (symbolizing the Christian soul) appears and leads them out of the Antarctic but, even as the albatross is praised by the ship's crew, the Mariner shoots the bird ("with my cross-bow / I shot the albatross"). The crew is angry with the Mariner, believing the albatross brought the south wind that led them out of the Antarctic. However, the sailors change their minds when the weather becomes warmer and the mist disappears ("'Twas right, said they, such birds to slay / that bring the fog and mist"). However, they made a grave mistake in supporting this crime as it arouses the wrath of spirits who then pursue the ship "from the land of mist and snow"; the...

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

...The Rime of the Ancient Mariner BY SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE Argument  How a Ship having passed the Line was driven by storms to the cold Country towards the South Pole; and how from thence she made her course to the tropical Latitude of the Great Pacific Ocean; and of the strange things that befell; and in what manner the Ancyent Marinere came back to his own Country. PART I It is an ancient Mariner, And he stoppeth one of three. 'By thy long grey beard and glittering eye, Now wherefore stopp'st thou me? The Bridegroom's doors are opened wide, And I am next of kin; The guests are met, the feast is set: May'st hear the merry din.' He holds him with his skinny hand, 'There was a ship,' quoth he. 'Hold off! unhand me, grey-beard loon!' Eftsoons his hand dropt he. He holds him with his glittering eye— The Wedding-Guest stood still, And listens like a three years' child: The Mariner hath his will. The Wedding-Guest sat on a stone: He cannot choose but hear; And thus spake on that ancient man, The bright-eyed Mariner. 'The ship was cheered, the harbour cleared, Merrily did we drop Below the kirk, below the hill, Below the lighthouse top. The Sun came up upon the left, Out of the sea came he! And he shone bright, and on the right Went down into the sea. Higher and higher every day, Till over the mast at noon—' The Wedding-Guest here beat his breast, For he heard the loud bassoon. The bride hath paced into the hall, Red as a rose...

How Does Charlotte Bronte Use Imagery In Jane Eyre

...vigorous bound for the attainment of liberty.” (Brontë, 369). St. John Rivers suppresses his love and passionate attracting to Rosamund Oliver because he feels called to serve as a missionary. St. John feels that Rosamund would not serve as an acceptable missionary wife so he turns to Jane Eyre as a replacement (Gregor, 128). St. John Rivers symbolizes the icy religion that overcomes Jane. This form of religion is described using water: " the waters came into my soul; I sank in deep mire: I felt no standing; I came into deep waters; the floods overflowed me” (Brontë, 300).  St. John's very nature is icy and cold. For example, Jane says the following statement about St. John, “… it is at all times difficult to break the ice of reserve glassing over such natures as his…” (Brontë, 357). He even tells Jane, “… I am—a cold hard man" (Brontë, 380). Jane’s reply is, "Whereas I am hot, and fire dissolves ice" (Brontë, 364). Jane protects her own flame of passion from the freezing heartlessness of St. John Rivers' "ice...

Rime of the Ancient Mariner

...the ancient Mariner's "glittering eye" and can do nothing but sit on a stone and listen to his strange tale. The Mariner says that he sailed on a ship out of his native harbor--"below the kirk, below the hill, / Below the lighthouse top"--and into a sunny and cheerful sea. Hearing bassoon music drifting from the direction of the wedding, the Wedding-Guest imagines that the bride has entered the hall, but he is still helpless to tear himself from the Mariner's story. The Mariner recalls that the voyage quickly darkened, as a giant storm rose up in the sea and chased the ship southward. Quickly, the ship came to a frigid land "of mist and snow," where "ice, mast-high, came floating by"; the ship was hemmed inside this maze of ice. But then the sailors encountered an Albatross, a great sea bird. As it flew around the ship, the ice cracked and split, and a wind from the south propelled the ship out of the frigid regions, into a foggy stretch of water. The Albatross followed behind it, a symbol of good luck to the sailors. A pained look crosses the Mariner's face, and the Wedding-Guest asks him, "Why look'st thou so?" The Mariner confesses that he shot and killed the Albatross with his crossbow. At first, the other sailors were furious with the Mariner for having killed the bird that made the breezes blow. But when the fog lifted soon afterward, the sailors decided that the bird had actually brought not the breezes but the fog; they now congratulated the Mariner on his deed. The...

...Devin Murray English 101 Professor Molitoris March 18, 2014 A Breakdown of Two Small But Powerful Poems Robert Frost’s “Fire and Ice” poem and Gwendolyn Brooks’ “We Real Cool” are ten lines or less but are poems that are extremely powerful and influential. Robert Frost talks about death but if the world ended, how would an individual want to die. Would an individual rather die by burning to death or being frozen to death? Gwendolyn Brooks’ poem is about a group of young black men who have no potential or future. All in all these poems have a vivid sense of imagery, an inspirational theme, and an odd rhyme scheme and meter. Although these two poems have two completely different subjects, they make you think and actually begin to questions certain aspects of life. In Brooks’ she sets the scene along with her characters and setting before even starting the poem. She lets know the characters are seven pool players, at the Golden Shovel. The Golden Shovel is a metaphor for these teenagers digging their own grave, when they’re supposed to be having fun, because they’re in their golden years. In lines 2-4 of her poem she talks about how the teenagers dropped out of school, stay out late, and that they commit crimes head on. This is a great example of imagery, because one can easily imagine young African-American kids not having anything to do after they dropped out of school and start to do illegal things. Therefore Brooks’ gave a great name for the setting, the Golden Shovel...

...August 20, 2015 3.2.13 Practice: Revision Strategies The tempest one of the most difficult Shakespearean works in my opion to stage, from its stormy, chaotic first scene to its sureality to its ambiguous resolution, with Prospero facing his silent, treacherous brother and renouncing the power that has made every action in the story possible. Potent language remains the central force and mystery of this fathomless play. Prospero speaks almost a third of the lines in The Tempest, and controls the amount of speech every other character on the island has through manipulation and magic. Prospero’s narrative of how he came to the island, what he did once there, and what he is owed for this history, goes largely unchallenged in the text. Yet the play offers innumerable readings and opportunities for alternate staging, particularly in light of postcolonial discourse about Prospero’s relationship with Ariel and Caliban, the legitimacy of his authority, and the nature of his magic and command over language. Though Prospero can be played many ways, there is no doubt he is The Tempest’s show runner. The metatheatrical nature of the play sometimes detracts from its action on the page, but it also offers the chance to explore exactly why Prospero needs an audience for his revenge, and whether or not it satisfies him, onstage. Prospero restricts the sight and knowledge of the other characters, putting them to sleep or manipulating them with invisible forces, but he often lets us, the audience...
